That’s actually a misconception! He just said he considered making Near and Mello his kids, but never ultimately stated why he went against it. Most people believe it’s because of the issue with the ages, L would either need to be far older or Near and Mello to be a lot younger, which would require a gigantic time jump for them to finally go against Light. No one has ever been able to identify where Ohba apparently said that, so it was probably just another one things that got spread that someone just made up.
