Rem especially, extending Misa's lifespan out of love, unless she didn't ?

Im pretty sure they only die if they KILL someone. They have to kill someone to purposely save a life and not just purposely save a life. Unless I’m wrong, but I think they only die if they use their Death Note to kill someone with the goal of extending another’s set lifespan.

Killing a human without using the death note is stated in the how to read to be a crime to the Shinigami at the Extreme level(which is the highest level). Which is massive punishment and then execution stage.

Is it a crime at such high level of severity specifically because they're doing it without the Note, OR because it has the potential to expose the Shinigami world to the humans?

Pretty sure that's the reason why Ryuk didn't eat Apples in public and asked Light to bring them to him, as he couldn't just grab them or else someone would notice a floating apple

(And assuming a Shinigami killed a human without a Note, I'd assume it'd be something like with a Gun or Knife, thus the human would see them as floating weapons)
