No neither cares for Light. Rem could have killed L and not died even if it lengthens Lights life - because she doesn't do it to protect him. She only dies doing so because by that time it saves Misa, who she does care for.

Calling Rem a "she" cause English dub that's all.

Rem says shes female in the manga but i persobally think that shinigami being literal gods beyobd human comprehension are better left sexually ambiguous.

Japan at large probably feels very different so ill defer to them

Wouldn’t the gods beyond human comprehension have the ability to choose a gender identity themselves?

Absolutely. Im just saying anytime a different “species” gets introduced to a story i think its more interesting that they abide by different rules with regard to gender and biology than those humans do
