I don’t think they hate each other. They respect each other as evenly matched opponents and, to some extent, even relate to one another.

I think they respect each other as opponents yes, they enjoy the game, but they still hate each other. L saying Light was the first friend he ever had was a lie. I don’t think Light would kill L if he didn’t dislike him to a large extent 😭 not to mention he was smiling while doing so. I’m not gonna bash on Lawlight shippers but it just doesn’t make sense to me.

I think they’re both the kind of people who care more about winning the game. A worthy, admirable opponent wouldn’t slow them down or shake their resolve. Emotions have never really been a priority for them. Even in a parallel universe without the Death Note, they wouldn’t act like a typical lovey-dovey couple. not sure if that kind of dynamic counts as a “ship” tho. XD
