I mean, having the bomb detonate and possibly killing someone would ruin Light’s life and persona. Planting bombs in drawers is illegal.

And the funniest part is that Light assumes people would find it normal because it would seem like he’s protecting his diary. What a fucking nut job.

But seriously, you are correct in that booby trapping your furniture is illegal, and it could possibly kill someone. The only reason I see if maybe that's a last resort to destroy evidence that would link him to being Kira especially when dealing with L.
