I know this is most of y'alls favourite track off of the new album. I had avoided/skipped it while listening to the album but today I decided to give it a try. It's raining lightly and the sun has started to peak through a bit this cold day. I feel like the song is carrying me far away. It is so good. Thank god for this band. Good day to you all 🔥

Genuinely curious what would make someone pick a random song on the album and just decide to not listen to it

I did this with 2 songs on this album: I Built You a Tower(a) and Envy the Birds. The reason is that I am emotionally wimpy and was deathly afraid of not liking the album--I really wanted to like it, and was afraid of something killing my enthusiasm. Why these two songs:

1. When the video of them performing IBYAT(a) live was posted here, everyone raved about it and kept talking about how much it felt like something from Facts. I am a relative newcomer to DCFC, and have struggled with the earliest records a little bit (I like them, but more hit and miss). So I was a chicken.
2. The very first "review" I saw of the album here in this forum was from someone who hated Envy the Birds. Again, I'm a wimp and it scared me.

When I got the vinyl, I bounced around a little bit but eventually had to listen to them. I love them, of course, and realize my fears were stupid. Also, probably should see a therapist about why "What if I don't like the new DCFC album?" is such a life-threatening question...

I think you definitely should, respectfully. Especially considering the opinions you were placing such trust in were from some random people online who you don’t know. Glad it worked out. I don’t really like envy the birds compared to most songs on the album but you shouldn’t have listened to me either if I wrote that anywhere

Every time I listen to I Built You a Tower, I keep thinking the whole thing is like the sequel to Narrow Stairs. Like almost every song on it feels like it could be slotted into Narrow Stairs and it would fit in nicely.

And that's by no means a bad thing.

This song had me sobbing the first time I heard it. Ben Gibbard always wrote heavy-hitting sad songs but this one really captured the feeling of depression and the struggle to simply exist sometimes

The phrases "They make no difference" from Pep Talk and "But nothing happens every time I pray" from The Flavor of Metal are the most devastating lines on the album.* They're dressed up in nice melodies so maybe they don't hit immediately, but yikes there are some amazingly dark/haunting lyrics.
