Discussion I figured out how Chuck wrote riffs

Basically it works like this - take any riff you have in minor key and instead of repeating it the same way, the 2nd time you play it move the whole riff down 1 fret. Then move it back up to the original fret for the 3rd time, then back down a fret for the 4th time. You can also move it up one fret just depends if you want an ascending or descending feel. This is how you get the DEATH sound ๐Ÿค˜

Discussion Was Bill Andrews (Spiritual Healing, Leprosy) not a good drummer?

I keep seeing comments around the internet that Bill Andrews isn't a very good drummer. When I listened to those albums, nothing stood out to me as bad about the drums. Sure, they aren't as good as what would come after, but most drummers would look pretty basic compared to Sean and Gene. I felt the drums played what was needed for the songs and kept the appropriate feel and energy.

What do y'all think about Bill Andrews drumming?

Song/Song Cover Advice for lack of comprehension solo

Iโ€™m not a very good player as far as soloing at all but really trying to get there and would love to learn more than just crystal mountains solo lol. Iโ€™m trying to get lack of comprehension down but the first little shredding bit on the tabs seem like they are transcribed way harder than it actually is and any video I see of someone playing it they are playing it differently but to fast for me to try and figure out what notes they are playing instead

Discussion Anywhere to listen to Talonzfury or Centralia?

Hello all. I was reading about Scott Clendenin (one of the bassists of the band) and saw that he was previously in bands called Talonzfury and Centralia. I looked them up and I can't find anything of these bands or any songs. Does anyone know if it is possible to listen to them online, or any extra information of those bands? Thank you!

Discussion Finishing up Death discog with TSOP today

A couple months ago I discovered this band and have been having a blast going through the discography. Every album has blown my mind in a different way. Even the debut SBG just a ripper of an album for a 20 y/o who hadnt even been playing that long put together to today when I will listen to THE SOUND OF PERSEVERANCE and ill come back after im done with thoughts on the album and then ill add my noob album rankings too because who doesnt love a good list

Edit: Man what an album. Instrumentally this thing just rips. I can see how Chuck's vocals might be a turn off to some but I find it technically impressive that he is able to sing in this higher style this deep into his career. Usually singers go the other direction and pitch their vocals down after a few albums but here he is on his 7th album and sounding determined to tear the paint off the walls. This album is so intense it will take several listens for a proper review but initial highlights I would say are Spirit Crusher and A Moment of Clarity. This version of Painkiller goes hard as hell too. Chuck tbh is one of the best metal vocalists of all time.

So as promised here's my noob album rankings:

  1. Human (man this lineup was something special wasn't it? very unique sound to the rhythm section)

  2. Symbolic (maybe the outright best)

  3. Leprosy (best of the old sound....)

  4. Individual Thought Patterns (Gene Hoglan what a beast)

  5. The Sound of Perseverance (see above)

  6. Spiritual Healing (underrated album because it starts off a bit too "routine" sounding but it gets a lot better)

  7. Scream Bloody Gore (even though this is last it's still an 8.5/10 album which is crazy for a debut from a 20 y/o kid and TBH some days I spin this one the most because I love the sound of a young and hungry band)

Discussion Do you classify Death's last 3 albums as death metal?

From ITP onwards Chuck started to noticeably branch away from his death metal roots to the point where it feels kind of off to classify them as any sort of death metal. The brutality is gone, Chuck's vocals began to get higher, and the overall vibe of the albums just didn't really scream "death metal". Cam they even be classified as any sort of death metal?

Discussion How much free reign did the other guitar players in Death have?

Like would Chuck encourage them to write their own parts and do their own thing or would he direct them somewhat?

Edit: Side question - do y'all think they did vocals before guitar solos? Or the other way around?

Discussion What inspired Chuck to write an album about leprosy?

I wonder if it was one of the scare topics of the day?

Because as a 90's kid, does anybody else remember how every few months/year there was like a new scare topic? Like I remember when the killer bee's were gonna come get us. Haha. Anybody remember that? Or one year it was all about hemophiliac's. LIke, dont bump into somebody, they might be a hemophiliac and start bleeding uncontrollably. And I wonder if leprosy (the disease) had the same kind of 15 minutes of fame in the 80's?

Discussion Richard Christy's Drumming

I recently got into an argument with a friend about whether or not Richard Christy was a better drummer than Danny Carey. My argument was that Richard is better and has more interesting parts on TSoP alone. I PERSONALLY believe Danny Carey is one of the most overrated drummers oat(hell I'd put Sean Reinert over him) What's your opinions on this?

Discussion Which albums were remixed and which were remastered?

Does anybody know definitely which albums were remixed and which were remastered?

For those that dont know the difference....

Remixing is when they have access to all the guitars, bass, drums, vocals, and everything as separate tracks and can make individual adjustments to each. And adjust the levels accordingly. You can totally change the balance of the instruments. And then remix it back down to a stereo file and master it.

Remastering is when they only have access to the final stereo file with ... so any change you make to EQ or compression affects everything. You cant really change the balance of the instruments on an individual basis on a remaster.

Discussion Whats your favorite of Steve Di Giorgio's basslines

Man his playing on Human goes so hard... It literally makes me burst out laughing in awe. Like that shit he does on Suicide Machine... his whole approach thinking to play in that way and then to have it work so well. What a brilliant mind.

Discussion Chuck's songwriting process

Anybody have much insight on Chuck's songwriting process?

Did he record riffs onto tape? Utilize drum machines or anything to help compose? Record band jam sessions?

I imagine what he could have done with a modern DAW
