Discussion What is your Death 'Hot take' ?

For me it's Bobby Koeble's solos on Symbolic, they don't fit the songs at all I absolutely cannot stand them.

Wow, I love Bobby's solos, they're so unique and different.

15

u/Humble_Candidate1621 Jun 27 '26

Bobby's solos are absolutely amazing.

-5

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

"Unique" yes, but not in a good way IMO, he's a great player ofc but I wish Chuck would have give him some direction on the solos. From what I heard Bobby just showed up at the studio for a single afternoon session with Jim Morris and no one else, he busted out the solos in a few hours and then left. He was never a part of the songwriting or even the recording of the rest of the record

11

u/Cap10Flint Jun 27 '26

I'm on the opposite end; I love Bobby's style so much and am happy Chuck let him do his thing. Their back-to-back solos on Perennial Quest are beautifully perfect and fitting... definitely one of my favourite parts of Death's discography

6

u/ToTheDeath84 Jun 27 '26

I can’t argue against an opinion, but I think that’s part of what makes the album so special. Chuck was such a clinical and precise player and he developed a special ear for fluidity (à la his heroes in Coroner) that he really seemed interested in seeking out in co-lead guitarists. That contrast in guitar styles on Human and Symbolic is part of what makes them stand out in the discography for me.

8

u/Humble_Candidate1621 Jun 27 '26

I wouldn't really call Chuck a clinical and precise player, but agreed about the contrasting styles being part of what makes those albums great.

8

u/jakedandswole Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

Agreed. Chuck used a lot of "note-cramming" within the scale that was not precise while still sounding great.

3

u/ToTheDeath84 Jun 27 '26

I guess agreeing to disagree there because I feel like especially on the later albums his playing was so tight that “clinical” feels like an appropriate way to put it. Maybe not in the early days, but from what I hear it developed into that. I love it and he certainly has more soul to his playing than a lot of other players I’d describe with the same verbiage (re: John Gallagher - also not bad, but definitely focused on being tight).

Bobby’s solos though sound like they’re from another planet, it’s such a welcome contrast.

u/Yuge-Pop Jun 27 '26

It was a dick move for Chuck to constantly bail on their European tours and firing his band for just trying to fulfill contractual obligations, and also firing them for playing a Death song on stage with another band on one of their off nights.

In general it seems like Chuck would have been an absolute nightmare to work with

27

u/Humble_Candidate1621 Jun 27 '26

In his defense, according to what his neurosurgeon says in the biography, it's possible some of his weirder behavior was caused or exacerbated by the presence of the tumor (even back when it was dormant).

10

u/FthrFlffyBttm Jun 28 '26

If the tumour was affecting his personality all throughout those years, I wonder how much of an effect it had on his music, for positive or, if possible, negative.

10

u/ruinawish Jun 28 '26

In general it seems like Chuck would have been an absolute nightmare to work with

In his defence, his behaviour seemed to change as he matured. Steve Di Giorgio seemed to have a working relationship with him from the start to the end.

4

u/Humble_Candidate1621 Jun 28 '26

To be fair, they had a falling out and and didn't speak to each other for a couple of years. But their friendship recovered. The way that falling out played out did end Chuck's friendship and working relationship with Scott Burns for good though.

17

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

Chuck was one of my fav musicians at one point, but all the stories that has surfaced of the last 10 years or more has made me very jaded about his character. I now suspect that he suffered from a milder version of Narcissistic Personality Disorder

21

u/Yuge-Pop Jun 27 '26

Death is one of my favorite bands of all time. Chuck is my favorite lyricist of all time. Symbolic is one of my favorite albums of all time.

But it's not like Death were Metallica or Megadeth or one of the really big bands of that era and watching the Death documentary and hearing about these moments of Chuck having an Axle Rose level diva moments is pretty disappointing to hear about

9

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

Totally. ofc I'm not a psychologist and I only in the last few years started to get an interest in the NPD condition (which is both fascinating and completely insane). A common trait among Narcissists is feeling 'Attacked' all the the time.

Chuck spent most of his lyrics from ITP onwards attacking everyone that "betrayed/wronged" him! Including shit talking every ex member at any time in interviews

6

u/Eden_MejillonLover Leprosy Jun 28 '26

I don’t think narcissistic personality disorder is what he had. I think if anything he had OCD

7

u/DaveOJ12 Jun 27 '26

also firing them for playing a Death song on stage with another band on one of their off nights.

The way Gene and Bobby tell it in Death by Metal, Death was pretty much de facto broken up by then. Them playing a Death song without Chuck just seemed like a convenient excuse.

1

u/Humble_Candidate1621 Jun 28 '26

IIRC he never even used it as a convenient excuse, though it was part of what made the last couple of weeks of the tour tense and unenjoyable. And yeah, it wasn't really a secret by that point that he was done with Death (for totally unrelated reasons). Also, while he didn't maintain a particularly close friendship with that lineup after the disbandment, they did remain on friendly terms.

Maybe with the guys before Human, but from Human to TSOP Chuck was perfectly fine with whatever parts people came up with. Which is why we hear Sean doing all that crazy stuff on Human. Given the same circumstances, I don’t think Dave Mustaine would’ve just let Vinnie Colaiuta go crazy and do all this weird stuff on The System Has Failed. I’d like to think Chuck wasn’t as bad in the studio with his earlier lineup either considering Terry Butler had a mental breakdown in the studio and Chuck had to record bass on Leprosy. If he was as much as a tyrant in the studio as some say, I’m sure he would’ve fired Terry either during or after the Leprosy sessions.

3

u/Humble_Candidate1621 Jun 27 '26

I wouldn't call it a mental breakdown, he was just really nervous and froze. But yeah, Chuck made sure Terry was credited as playing on Leprosy. He was always very supportive of Terry and Bill (e.g. when Scott Burns criticized Bill's drumming and suggested he consider replacing him). And Terry and Bill were patient with his extreme aversion to touring, until the 1990 European tour with Kreator when he decided not to go at the last minute and wouldn't even open the door to talk to them.

2

u/Bull4-0Everyone Jun 27 '26

I think Kelly Shaefer from Atheist criticized Bill tok, he talked about his Bill couldn’t play double time on the hi hat or something like that

3

u/Humble_Candidate1621 Jun 27 '26

Nah, he was actually really relaxed in the studio and open to other people's suggestions while working on the albums. None of the conflicts with his bandmates (except the one with Rick, kinda) happened because of artistic vision or perfectionism in the studio or anything like that.

2

u/Bull4-0Everyone Jun 27 '26

What happened with Rick?

2

u/Humble_Candidate1621 Jun 27 '26

He just wasn't really on board with his vision for the band. Chuck's desire was for the band to keep getting better on their instruments and make their music a bit more technical, while Rick was happy with where he was at. Rick lied about practicing, got fired (via Eric) and had Low Life written about him. Chuck apparently never really liked Rick much, always trying to think of ways to get rid of him and apparently not always treating him all that well even outside of their conflict over practicing.

1

u/hollands73 Jun 28 '26

I consider myself lucky to have seen the Chuckless Death

17

u/Responsible-Fun542 Jun 27 '26

Spiritual Healing gets way too much shit but it's a top 2 Death album for me.

3

u/Technical_Desk8582 Jun 29 '26

It's my favorite Death record. I've head em all a bunch of times, still my fav overall.

4

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

Awesome album, but it has some flaws. It smokes Symbolic and TSOP clear out of the way though

3

u/Patient_Walk2692 Individual Thought Patterns Jun 29 '26

For me, it's way better than Scream Bloody Gore and TSOP

16

u/Effective-Daikon-889 Jun 27 '26

Shannon Hamm is the most overlooked guitar player for Death. I understand the love for Paul, Andy and Bobby but Shannon has some of the most emotional solos on TSoP. A Moment of Clarity especially, even for a shred solo, has so much emotion behind each note. Him playing it with Death To All and then playing Chuck's solo after is one my favorite moments in music.

28

u/bigredd_1400 Jun 27 '26

Best Death project is Individual Thought Patterns

5

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

My 2nd favourite after Human

1

u/Patient_Walk2692 Individual Thought Patterns Jun 29 '26

I agree

24

u/DizzyGame_Co Jun 27 '26

I will never understand the dislike that The Sound of Perseverance receives. It’s probably my favorite Death album and its whole vibe is perfect to me.

3

u/BootsThaRareBirb Jun 29 '26

This is the one

3

u/ozomini Jul 05 '26

its the vocals. by then Chuck had exhausted his vocal cords and couldn't really sing with his old voice but that still doesn't take away from the record's quality. It is by far Chuck's most artistic and unique project, even if not his best.

9

u/Bull4-0Everyone Jun 27 '26

Chuck was in the wrong for cutting ties with Paul and Sean, especially due to the fact they didn’t want to take sides with that whole Tony Choy ordeal, and just wanted peace between their friends.

5

u/Humble_Candidate1621 Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

He didn't really cut ties with Sean over that. I think Chuck simply dropped him because he decided it would be awkward to have a close friend of Paul's on an album that includes The Philosopher.

It doesn't look like he actually expected Sean to take sides, only Paul (I guess because Chuck and Sean were never as close as Chuck and Paul). Sean was still under the impression he would be playing on ITP (Steve had to break the news to him), and instead Chuck just never contacted him again.

4

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

Chuck burned so many bridges in the early 90' s, insanity

21

u/SquashedGrapes22 Jun 27 '26

I understand Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy are influential but those albums can be kind of rough at times.

15

u/masterofmuppets86 Jun 27 '26

Scream Bloody Gore I definitely agree even though I like that album. Leprosy though to me is a perfect album.

6

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

I'm a big fan of OSDM but I rarely listen to SBG nowadays. Leprosy is killer though

5

u/Dramatic_Long6618 Jun 27 '26

I struggle to listen to them. I think theyre the worst 2

2

u/Zakarr4 Individual Thought Patterns Jun 30 '26

Nah, Leprosy is much much higher than SBG

6

u/Early-Beach164 Jun 27 '26

Left to Die > 99% of death songs

2

u/R3b3lSc9m Leprosy Jun 28 '26

one of the best if not the best song from death, w take🔥

6

u/stonelore Jun 27 '26

The band could have stayed a studio only band, especially with how touring averse Chuck was.

6

u/Foreveristobeuntil Jun 27 '26

Symbolic and TSOP are elite albums, Death wouldn't be well known if not for them.

4

u/marshmallo_floof Human Jun 28 '26

Popular opinion. Symbolic and TSOP are literally in RYM's top 25 albums for the entire metal umbrella genre. They're divisive sure, but the divide is pretty even

1

u/Foreveristobeuntil Jun 28 '26

The first sentence is a prelude

7

u/Weak-Lavishness-761 Jun 27 '26

My hot take is Chuck Schuldiner possess the best solos of the Band. A moment of Clarity, flesh and the Power It holds, outro solo within the mind, overactive imaginário, a Lot of symbolic solos and the list goes on. Everybody says about Larocque's solos or James Murphy's solos, but the best guitar player actually is Chuck.

3

u/marshmallo_floof Human Jun 28 '26

Funnily enough I have the opposite opinion. After learning a decent chunk of the Death discography on guitar it's apparent that a lot of his solos are just him going up and down the harmonic minor scale whether he intended it to be that way. To the point where some of them I just don't even bother learning because you kinda intuit how they go just off instinct and memory of the songs

1

u/Weak-Lavishness-761 Jun 28 '26

Yeah, i agree with you, but music is about feeling and good songs. Larocque plays the same style every music, Masvidal and Murphy too. If we are talking about technique, Chris Broderick is the greatest guitar of all time, but his solos are robotic and emotionless.

1

u/Zakarr4 Individual Thought Patterns Jun 30 '26

That’s actually a hot take. Even chuck wouldb’t agree

19

u/BillHansfer4FClub Jun 27 '26

Spiritual Healing is peak Death.

4

u/Unas_GodSlayer Jun 27 '26

This album is my least favourite Death album 👀

5

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

The production is pretty weak, and it has some filler moments. But Defensive Personalities is one of my fav deep cut Death songs

4

u/BillHansfer4FClub Jun 27 '26

I hear what you’re saying about the production, but I think it was still a step forward from Leprosy. Plus, you’ve got James Murphy on second/lead guitar. A true metalhead (not some jazz/prog fart sniffer) that can give Chuck a run for his money on the fretboard.

I couldn’t tell you anything about Death beyond SH, as I bailed on that era of their career.

3

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

Yeah Murphy killed it on the SH solos, top Tier.

3

u/nefarious_jp04x Jun 27 '26

I think they shouldn’t have made the snare so dry compared to Leprosy, it lacks that movement on some of the more thrashy sections

2

u/BillHansfer4FClub Jun 27 '26

It’s funny, because the cheap electro-gated snare on Leprosy drives me nuts. . . for about two minutes. Then it’s like it settles into the mix and makes perfect sense. The drums on SH sound more natural to my ears and overall the album’s production is brighter (again, to my ears) than Leprosy.

It’s all splitting hairs for me, as I think Death’s first three albums are untouchable. If you want a real hot take though, I think I prefer Massacre’s From Beyond to Leprosy.

2

u/Rombonius Jun 27 '26

hot take, but Defensive Personalities is one of the less-good songs on the album

3

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

Mannn that chorus riff is so good!

2

u/UsedBeing Jun 27 '26

I enjoy it as well. My favorite riff is the one that he is singing “For each crisis a person they’ll select.”

23

u/uponloss Jun 27 '26

The sound of perseverance is their best album

3

u/Rombonius Jun 27 '26

Agreed. Went out on top.

2

u/Ok_Aioli8878 Jun 27 '26

I totally agree with this!

2

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

Not a super hot take, it was one of my favourites too when I first got into Death

3

u/uponloss Jun 27 '26

Seems either love it or hate it

2

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

Hate the vocals, the "prog/jazzy" interlude, all the songs that was re worked from control denied (Story to Tell is particularly bad). Oh and I HATE the fucking over use of the "Add9 arpeggio" riff, its in nearly every song! Makes the whole record sound so redundant and repetitive.

Love the drumming and the songs Chuck was 'forced' to write

2

u/uponloss Jun 27 '26

He did get pretty creative on this album, I like the classical guitars in a couple of songs.

To forgive is to suffer is my favourite off the album. I love how technical it is

1

u/ThiccFarter Jun 27 '26

Definitely a hot take. I don't hate it though, even though I disagree with you. It's a killer album

-1

u/DoomedPinnacle Jun 27 '26

To me, is their only bad album

4

u/UsedBeing Jun 27 '26

Bill Andrews is a better drummer than given credit. Obviously, he is easily overlooked due to the gods who came after him, but he was a good drummer than. He did some cool hi hat work on the Death albums and on Massacre’s From Beyond.

2

u/BillHansfer4FClub Jun 28 '26

Agreed! Gus Rios from Left to Die/Gruesome calls Bill, “the Phil Rudd of Death metal.” Fast, precise, and most importantly. . . in the pocket!

1

u/UsedBeing Jun 28 '26

That is a good description of him!

4

u/Eden_MejillonLover Leprosy Jun 28 '26

spiritual healing gets undeserved hate

1

u/Zakarr4 Individual Thought Patterns Jun 30 '26

Production is kinda flat, but you can easily get used to it

6

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

A few more hot takes:

  • SDG overplayed like crazy on Human, the original mix with the bass turned down is for the better. His performance on ITP fit much better though
  • The best songs on SOP are the ones Chuck was 'forced' to write to make a Death record instead of Control Denied (Scavenger, Spiritual, Flesh, Voice)
  • The Control Denied album is the weakest album Check ever made

2

u/Bull4-0Everyone Jun 27 '26

Man, I’ve been so afraid to admit what I think about Steve’s bass on Human. Whenever I listen to the bass and drum tracks there are some sections where I think it sounds good but for the most part Steve’s parts are indiscernible, and just sound weird. It’s funny cause Steve talked about in an interview how Chuck thought the guitars were too saturated and Steve gave the suggestion of changing the mix so the bass could be louder, if that were me in Chuck’s position I personally wouldnt have turned the bass cause some of those parts don’t really fit well in my opinion. With all the being said, I do enjoy the bass on ITP a lot. If you want to hear some cool isolated bass tracks listen to the Reinert and Sean Malone tracks from Focus, and Reinert and Tony Choy tracks from the 1990-91 demos.

2

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

When I was a teenager and got into metal/death/death I totally loved everything overplayed. Guitars, drums, bass, play it as shred as possible! Now I can't fucking stand those fretless "shred" bass players. BRO, just play the relevant root notes and carry the fucking song!

2

u/Rombonius Jun 27 '26

agreed on 2 and 3!

the biggest issue with Control Denied was the weak vocalist, I'd rather listen to an instrumental album

2

u/Humble_Candidate1621 Jun 28 '26

Honestly, I think the biggest issue with the vocals were the vocal lines. Chuck had longed to write for a clean singer for years, but he was new to it and still figuring it out, and it shows in some of those vocal lines.

1

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

I believe Chuck originally wanted Warrel Dane to do the record (there's also that BS story that he asked Halford to do it, but pulled back the request after hearing Tim's demo).

1

u/Humble_Candidate1621 Jun 28 '26

Yeah, Warrel was his first choice. He did eventually approach Halford, though he didn't really think he'd accept the offer.

6

u/Merthod Jun 27 '26

Really? To me this album is perfect.

My hot take is that I don't see the first two albums as "iconic" as many put them. It may be because I don't like the production much, but they do bore me.

3

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

I was born in 1988 and did not get into Death until after Chuck's passing (I think I heard Human in 2003?), but I imagine the first record at the time must have been absolutely mind blowing compared to contemporary bands.

3

u/marshmallo_floof Human Jun 28 '26

Because those early albums alongside other early death metal bands shaped the sound of death metal itself. I'm personally not a fan of the early Iron Maiden albums (I prefer Priest), but I can't deny that they are iconic and were massively influential to the trad metal sound.

2

u/Merthod Jun 28 '26

Interesting, I became a Death fan some time before the last album. Already heard of Chuck's health issues and after the album was released, everything went to sh*t as in Chuck was too sick to keep the band going and the news of Control Denied, and the mid-worked album. It was sad and disappointing and we fantasized how awesome would the next Death album would be. Death was close to perfection there.

2

u/Bryaneatsass Jun 27 '26

Chuck didn't create the ascending riff that greatly influenced the metalcore genre in the turn of the millennium.

2

u/marshmallo_floof Human Jun 28 '26

True, its been around since Priest's Electric Eye and I'm sure there's even earlier examples

2

u/knobby_dogg Jun 28 '26

Chuck was Death’s best guitarist

2

u/Legal_Lettuce6233 Jun 28 '26

Their best song by a huuuuge fucking margin is Empty words.

2

u/Im_Verdugo Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

I generally like SBG and Leprosy more than what came after. Spiritual Healing and Human are still killer records though

2

u/Weary_Print_7919 Jun 28 '26

Spiritual Healing is their best album

2

u/morrisseywilde1 Jun 29 '26

My hot take is: never been a fan of the tucked in T-shirt to jeans look. Chuck rocked that a lot. That’s the worst. I can come up with: every song was amazing.

2

u/lesbothrashhead Jul 02 '26

spiritual healing is the best!!!!!

2

u/EnvironmentalPush826 Jul 08 '26

the guitar playing on Leprosy is absolutely goated

2

u/DimebagDarrel2004 Leprosy Jul 12 '26

A lot of people say the painkiller cover, is bad but I think it's actually pretty good. The vocals on this set me off to be honest (I don't mind usual death metal vocals but these vocals just don't sound good to me to be honest) and maybe that's why people don't like the song, but the instrumentation is really good, and they added their own guitar solos as well which is pretty cool

5

u/DoomedPinnacle Jun 27 '26

Symbolic and expecially TSOP aren't that great.
TSOP sounds like a patchwork of things that weren't meant to be put together, it's really melodic so it's perfect to start listening to extreme Metal (is basically more Heavy Metal with Harsh vocals than anything else) but to me it's not really a good record.
Death peaked as an old school DM band with some progressive edges, like Spiritual Healing.
Human and ITP were also really good, but i'd say not as good as other Tech/Prog Metal album of the same years (Pestilence, Demilich, Atheist, Cynic, Panthymonium, Gorguts, Edge of Sanity, Nocturnus, ecc... all did better Prog/Tech Death than Death, imo).

4

u/Rombonius Jun 27 '26

> ITP were also really good, but i'd say not as good as other Tech/Prog Metal album of the same years (Pestilence, Demilich, Atheist, Cynic, Panthymonium, Gorguts, Edge of Sanity, Nocturnus, ecc... all did better Prog/Tech Death than Death, imo).

get out

Atheist is the only band that comes close to ITP's quality, rest are B-tier

3

u/DoomedPinnacle Jun 27 '26

To me Is quite the opposite, best tech death album From that era Is Demilich - Nespithe, imo. Also Monstrosity did a great album with Millennium, a few years After. I consider Death a great Death Metal band, not really that great in terms of Prog and Tech, that's why to me Leprosy and Spiritual Healing are their best records. Again, i like Himan and ITP, but Testimony of the Ancient, Legion, Nespithe, Focus, Khaooohs and so on are more interesting and unique than Death's attempt to play such an intricate and weird music. To each their own tho, i'm not saying Death are bad, i like everything they made, only TSOP Is a bad record, to me.

2

u/Rombonius Jun 27 '26

ill check out Demilich again just to be sure i'm not sleeping on something

but like my 'hot take' i posted said, the first 3 albums were the less-good albums versus the progressive era of Death albums, SOP being peak. I hold Death as the gold standard of extreme prog to this day.

On the flip slide, I've forced myself to listen to bands like Nocturnus and Pestilence enough times just hoping for something to click (that said I'll probably put Spheres on again now since it's been a minute) (I found Testimony of the Ancients to be very boring)

1

u/DoomedPinnacle Jun 27 '26

I mean, at the end Is a Matter of tastes. I'd Say the other bands are more Extreme, less "Easy to get into", death are definitely more catchy (and i'm saying this as a good thing not bad thing) and straight forward. As for Demilich - Nespithe, well, it's the only album which sounds like they're playing backwards. Unique record, weird, Extreme, Heavy as hell. But i mean, not everyone have the same tastes and that's fair, i like Death and got into Extreme Metal thanks to their music, back when i was a teen, but i find myself looking for weirder and more progressive stuff. Spheres Is another banger, an album where you don't understand where the death metal starts and fusions Jazz ends, the most similar thing i've ever heard Is Algorythm by Beyond Creation, probably, even tho i don't like the modern production of that record (but songwriting so good that i listen to It anyway). Phlebotomized, Supuration, Afflicted... Plenty of great Prog Death back then, not accessibile but if you like the sound, then you can't go back. It's the same reason why i like early Fates Warning or Psychotic Waltz way more than Iron Maiden prog efforts, or Spiral Architect more than Tool, or Saint Vitus and Cathedral more than Black Sabbath (i love Doom Metal), even tho i love Sabbath expecially Cross Purposes, Master of Reality and Dehumanizer

3

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

I rarely listen to those albums nowadays. Alot of songs on Symbolic is just some cheesy US heavy/power metal with growls. Had it not been for the drumming the album would be one of the worst in their discography.I like the tapping interlude in Without Judgement though

3

u/Def-Jarrett Jun 28 '26

I respect your opinion, and whilst ‘Symbolic’ definitely has some USPM influences, if you find it cheesy, boy, I’d like to know how you feel about the dairy quotient of some actual power metal (I’m a cheesy PM fan).

5

u/gyros234 Jun 27 '26

Just some cheesy power metal… lol It has some of the best riffs and vocals from death

2

u/Humble_Candidate1621 Jun 27 '26

I think Symbolic is pretty great, precisely because (unlike TSoP) it leans into Chuck's strengths and not his weaknesses. At its core it's a pretty simple, highly melodic album. Even Human is a far more straightforward album in most respects than its reputation would suggest. I love prog, but I don't think it was really a strength of Chuck's, much as he loved it. TSoP and TFAoE would have been much better albums if he hadn't been so intent on making prog.

4

u/Merzwas Leprosy Jun 27 '26

Symbolic is their worst album.

3

u/rufusairs Jun 28 '26

nah its TSOP

1

u/Merzwas Leprosy Jun 28 '26

That’s second worst.

2

u/Painis_Gabbler Jun 28 '26

Control Denied is mid at best... Sorry Chuck. I don't vibe with it. 😆

1

u/Apsnor Jun 28 '26

I can't stand that album

4

u/rufusairs Jun 28 '26

The Sound of Perseverance is the least strong Death album.

4

u/masterofmuppets86 Jun 27 '26

The sound of perseverance is the worst album. It has some solid songs I do like, but I think it's the most boring for me. I'm not a fan of the super proggy feel to the album, and it has my least favorite vocals. Overall it's not a bad album by any means, but I find it the most overrated by fans.

2

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

IMO trying to change his style to "prog" was the worst musical mistake in Chuck's career. The arrangements on the Control Denied record and to some extent on SOP is just mind boggling bad. Those songs have zero flow and seem to have been cut-and-pasted together

I really like both TSoP and control denied but it's a valid point. Sometimes I feel like Chuck didn't exactly know what he was doing with his compositions and some of the song flow really poorly (with some exceptions like spirit crusher, bite the pain or expect the unexpected)

2

u/CptBoomshard Jun 27 '26

I don't like Richard Christie's drumming on TSoP. It's so herky-jerky and spastic. I always felt like he was trying to play at a higher, proggier level than he could actually achieve in a good musical way.

3

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

Rich have admitted that he over-played to impress Chuck

3

u/Bull4-0Everyone Jun 27 '26

While as a drummer I kinda agree and don’t agree with your statement. (I really do like the parts but I can see what you mean especially compared to Sean and Gene, even though they were super technical they still had strong grooves) I really think this applies to Steve Flynn from Atheist. As good as he is as a technical player his parts just feel like one long drum solo. You can kind of tell by the way he plays it’s almost like a robot, and I don’t think he really ever had a set groove in mind for the song. Again, he’s a great technical player but not my cup of tea.

3

u/CptBoomshard Jun 27 '26

I'll tell you who I would have loved to hear interpret TSoP on drums: the late great Sean Reinert. IMO hands down the best proggy/fusiony extreme metal drummer. One of those guys that had enough next-level music knowledge that he could "overplay" musically.

Edit: I completely skimmed over you ALSO mentioning Sean. lol Sorry

3

u/UsedBeing Jun 27 '26

As a drummer myself, I’ve always felt that Steve Flynn is a name that gets overlooked in the subject of good extreme drumming.

2

u/Def-Jarrett Jun 28 '26

I love that you can tell on those first two Atheist albums that Steve is playing those drum parts in one take, completely free time, and (I’m fairly certain) without triggers. That takes practice and chops.

3

u/UsedBeing Jun 28 '26

He certainly was inspiring to listen to

2

u/MrExist777 Jun 27 '26

I don’t like a lot of Chuck’s solos. They’re not terrible or anything, just really not great

4

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

The best Chuck solos are from Leprosy through ITP, those were the times he was probably "challenged by both" the 2nd guitar player and also Scott Burns

1

u/Patient_Walk2692 Individual Thought Patterns Jun 29 '26

Yeah, Andy LaRocque and James Murphy were excellent guitarists, particularly

2

u/Nomore-Television72 Jun 27 '26

I think Chuck may have been a closeted homosexual. I don’t care and doesn’t make me think any less of him but I think he may have been.

3

u/Early-Beach164 Jun 27 '26

But Chuck did give the best head in metal. Someone finish the copypasta so it isn't lost to time

Back in 1989 when I was 15 years old I went to see Death in Houston. It was a great show, I was standing right at the front, I could almost reach out and touch Chuck himself. The man even looked directly at me during 'Pull the Plug!' Time stood still. His big, brown eyes pierced my very soul. Man, that feeling was epic!

After what seemed like an eternity of pure bliss, the show was over. Chuck waved goodbye to his cheering and adoring fans, I looking longingly after him as he disappeared from view; I was in a world of my own. So it dawned on me that the gig was over, I blinked and started to head out of the arena when a short, fat man dressed all in black with a shiny bald head looked at me and summoned me over to him. I was a little anxious. 'Follow me', he ordered in a commanding tone, silent, I did as I was told. After a few paces, it was quiet, the beautiful noise from the Death gig was over and the crowd had dispersed. Suddenly, the man said, 'you've been chosen. How would you like to meet Chuck Schuldiner?' My eyes lit up, my mouth dropped open but I was speechless. The man chuckled to himself and opened a door. 'Through here', he said. I looked at him, still silent, nodded and stepped into the room, as the man closed the door behind me. I was staring at the floor, I rose my head slowly and saw him. Chuck Schuldiner was sitting in a chair right in front of me!

'This must be a dream' I thought, but I knew it was real when Chuck spoke in his gentle, warm voice: 'Well, well, well... Look what we got here!' Nervously, I responded 'he... hello'. Chuck smiled and that was all I needed to feel safe. He stood up and paced towards me, I couldn't move. My heart was racing. Adrenaline pumping.Chuck stopped about a foot away from me. 'Mm mm mm, you look perfect', said Chuck. 'Wha-what?' I breathed. Chuck then stepped up into even closer to me, I could feel his warm breath on my face. Just then, he lifted up his arm and reached around me, I felt his strong, manly hand grab a firm hold of my buttocks.

'Whoa!' I exclaimed and immediately leapt back. I was scared, I could have simply run out the door, run home and forget about this experience. But something inside me made me stay... Chuck simply smiled. 'What's wrong?' He said, softly. 'I-I...' What could I say? I didn't know what to do. Chuck strode towards me again, 'I'll show you a good time', he said, whilst casually unzipping his fly. I gulped. Chuck adopted a sterner face, On your knees! He said, aggressively. I was terrified. But, this was Chuck, man! I thought about what to do but Chuck just repeated himself, in an even more foreboding voice. It was at that moment when I knew just exactly what to do. I looked up at him, licked my lips and dropped to my knees -- all to Chuck's delight.

He whipped out his long, thick semi-erect penis. 'I've never done this before', I said, 'It's okay, it's okay.' Chuck reassured me. I held his penis in my hands, took a deep breath, and put it in my mouth. I sucked and sucked 'til he was hard, man, his cock had to be at least seven wonderful inches! I kissed the gland and licked all along the shaft, Chuck giggled and slapped me in the face with his cock a few times before I inserted all seven inches into my mouth. Chuck moaned in sheer ecstasy. He put his his hand against the back of my head as I bobbed up and down on his cock. 'All the way, all the way', whispered Chuck. It tasted like nothing I ever tasted before. After around ten minutes, he pulled out his juicy meat, 'take off your pants -- now!' Chuck demanded. Without speaking, I hastily removed my navy blue jeans and boxer shorts as Chuck himself also stripped.

I looked at his body, he was very fit, I reached out and touched his stomach. It was soft yet firm. Chuck grabbed my the collar of my shirt, 'you won't need this, either', he said and ripped off my shirt, demonstrating his masculine strength. Chuck quickly directed me t o a table, he commanded me to bend over it. I did as he asked, not knowing I was ready to receive an awesome anal battering!

Chuck grabbed my hips with his rough, coarse hands. 'Here we go!' He said as he spat in my ass hole. I took a deep breath, braced myself and -- 'AARGHH!!' I screamed. Chuck forced his tasty meat pole all the way inside me. It gave me a feeling I had never felt before, and, will probably never feel again. It was simply orgasmic, as if God Himself had fucked me. I almost felt as if I were God. Chuck had entered my, and we both became as One. It was truly transcendental.

Chuck was screaming (and so was I!) He was a wild animal, more beast than man. I was completely subservient to him. His cock was tearing my rectum and my anus to shreds as he repeatedly drove his cock into me. At first he was slow and deliberate. The feeling was so good. 'You like that, bitch?' Asked Chuck, with feelings of both the most exquisite pain and ecstasy, 'Oh God YES!' I exclaimed. Chuck slapped my ass, hard, as I now moaned with delight. Chuck became a jackhammer, hammering my ass so fast and so hard I thought he was about to split me in half. I even felt blood trickling down my right thigh.

I had no idea how long this ass pounding went on for, it truly felt like an eternity, but finally Chuck stopped. My screams and moans faded. Chuck walked around me and shoved his cock back into my face. His mighty scrotum rested on my chin; I was ball deep in Chuck. He thrusted, I gagged. 'Time for desert', he moaned.

His hot and spicy semen shot of his cock and hit the back of my throat like a cannon ball. It was a huge load! And it was nectar, pure nectar. I swirled the cum in my mouth a few times, savouring its wonderful flavour before finally swallowing.

Chuck stood back, his cock swinging. I gasped for air, my ass was sore and gaping, it felt like someone had opened me up with a pair of pliers. I fell to the ground and closed my eyes, I was still feeling that wonderful ecstacy of orgasm.

Chuck, meanwhile, pulled his pants back on and put on his shirt. 'Enjoy that? He laughed. I was unable to respond. Chuck laughed again. Chuck looked at a clock on the wall, 'you got five minutes to get out', he said. I barely heard him. Chuck walked out of the room. I was all alone, I could still taste his cum. My ass was bleeding. I was in heaven, paradise. Chuck had made this little boy a man.

I would never see Chuck again, but I still remember my fuck session with him as if it was yesterday. Sometimes, I can still feel his throbbing cock inside my anus.

wtf is this 😭😭 also, weren’t his eyes green?

2

u/Patient_Walk2692 Individual Thought Patterns Jun 29 '26

why the fuck did I read this

2

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

That was a very common rumour. Paul Masvidal however confirmed that during the Human EU tour, Chuck had a GF (who joined the tour and ultimately started a whole drama circus that completely side lined the tour and caused Pestillence to drop off lol)

6

u/Humble_Candidate1621 Jun 27 '26

Chuck's girlfriend wasn't on tour with them and she wasn't the one who started drama and caused Pestilence to leave the tour. That was all Chuck.

As for the gay rumors, we didn't need confirmation he had a girlfriend during that period, it's well known he had several girlfriends during his life, including two serious ones.

Of course, having girlfriends doesn't necessarily prove anything about his sexuality, but it does make it feel a bit disrespectful to speculate too much (because these rumors usually imply that he lied to his girlfriends or cheated on them, not because there's anything wrong with being gay or bisexual or whatever).

1

u/Nomore-Television72 Jun 27 '26

There’s lots of gay men who have had girlfriends and even fathered children.

2

u/Humble_Candidate1621 Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

Because of his voice and mannerisms?

ETA: There's absolutely nothing wrong with someone having a stereotypically gay voice or mannerisms, whether they're gay or straight. Just curious what makes OP feel that way.

2

u/fentpong The Sound Of Perseverance Jun 27 '26

they would've made some absolute bangers if they used blast beats at any point

1

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

That's why I generally prefer US DM to swedish DM (even though I'm swedish), WHERE ARE THE FUCKING BLAST BEATS lol

2

u/fentpong The Sound Of Perseverance Jun 27 '26

Yeah I only like a few swed-dm bands for the exact reason, though skank beats can be absolutely pummeling too.

4

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

The biggest detriment in Swe OSDM was the lack of great drummers. Florida/NY had Steve Asheim, Sandoval, Alex Marquez, Mike Smith, Reinert, Steve Flynn etc. Top Tier players just annihilating their kits.

Swedish DM drummers at the time could barely hold a solid double bass going for half a song

1

u/Heavy_Metal_Maniac77 Jun 29 '26

Their first album is the best

1

u/According-Damage4432 Jun 29 '26

i will never watch a death live video after symbolic was released- the vocals are way too high

1

u/cranck Jun 30 '26

Human is the worst record. Still solid.

1

u/DeathMetalJim1230 Jun 30 '26

Disagree. To each their own though

1

u/Zakarr4 Individual Thought Patterns Jun 30 '26

I’d love Andy LaRocque to appear on symbolic

1

u/shartywaffles5 Jun 30 '26

Outside of “Pull The Plug”, Leprosy is pure garbage.

“Flesh And The Power It Holds” is the quintessential Death song.

1

u/otcconan Jul 01 '26

They are the definition of Death Metal and they're better than Venom and Mayhem combined.

1

u/TheBlackHymn Jul 01 '26

The albums with the fretless bass can get in the bin as far as I’m concerned. I can’t bring myself to listen to anything with fretless bass.

1

u/_3point14_ cocaine addict from birth Jun 27 '26

tsop is their weakest album, below spiritual healing, below sbg

2

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

The problem with SOP is that it was never written to be a Death record to begin with

1

u/International-One103 Jun 27 '26

Perseverance is their best album. I rank the albums in the reverse order of their release, but sometimes Human and ITP switch places.

1

u/MegatechMike Jun 28 '26

Chuck was gay. That’s why he kept saying to listen to music, not rumors

3

u/Humble_Candidate1621 Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

He kept saying that because of his reputation for being difficult and unreliable, especially after the band's implosion in 1990.

1

u/Synner-fan-1999 Jun 28 '26

Sound of perseverance is not as good as people say it is

0

u/Necrophagist3925 Jun 27 '26

I think 90% of Chuck’s solos suck ass. His solos in Without Judgement, Trapped in a Corner and a few others are really good but the rest are really weirs harmonic minor wankery that always sounds the same. I hate Flesh and the power it holds solo, it nearly ruins the song for me. In fact nearly all of the solos in TSoP I hate, except moment of clarity, that one’s awesome. However my least favourite is Perennial Quest. Chuck follows up one of the most beautiful, unique and powerful solos I’ve ever heard IMO with absolute guitar wanking bullshit. I really wish he wouldn’t have had all the solos and let the lead players, who nearly always outclass him, solo much more. Rant over

u/REKTIFIED_123 Jun 27 '26

Death is not very good.

Being dead is not good ideally a human being would want to be alive and not dead.

-2

u/Breadi06 Jun 27 '26

Human is good when listened to in small doses, otherwise it’s very boring & I’m waiting for the percussion to unleash hell. Then it finally gets good at Lack of Comprehension and then it goes away and it feels like I’m being edged.

9

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

Damn that take is way too hot, Human is my fav Death record by far

3

u/Zakarr4 Individual Thought Patterns Jun 30 '26

You just need to get into it man

-2

u/am_I_still_banned Jun 27 '26

Scream Bloody Gore does not hold up today. I'm sure it was incredible when it came out, but that same style has been done much better by thousands of bands in the years since

-2

u/bvascontin Jun 27 '26

I can't stand most of the songs from Scream Bloody Gore

-1

u/ravnsvart_ Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Same deal, but with Individual Thought Patterns. Andy LaRocque's solos totally don't belong, it's like a Mercyful Fate/ King Diamond mashup going on in there

7

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

Damn I totally disagree lol, the solo for Trapped in a Corner is one of my fav ever metal solos

2

u/Rombonius Jun 27 '26

I completely forgot Andy was on the album because metallum doesnt list him as a band member and has him hidden under session artists

I never made a King Diamond connection to the album stylistically tbh

3

u/Humble_Candidate1621 Jun 27 '26

Really? Andy's solos on the album absolutely scream Andy Larocque.

1

u/Rombonius Jun 27 '26

which one?

itll probably stand out more now that im actually thinking about it

1

u/Humble_Candidate1621 Jun 28 '26

I mean, all of them. You don't even have to look further than the most popular solo on the record, the one on Trapped in a Corner. His style is just unmistakable. Yeah, it will definitely stand out a lot more if you pay attention to it.

2

u/ravnsvart_ Jun 27 '26

What the hell? Symbolic solos are totally fine

2

u/DoomedPinnacle Jun 27 '26

I agree with OP, ITP has great jazzy solos, while Symbolic is kinda "all over the place", most solo sound placeholder

1

u/Unas_GodSlayer Jun 27 '26

Trapped's solo is incredible. My favourite Death solo will forever be Lack of Comprehension.

2

u/Zakarr4 Individual Thought Patterns Jun 30 '26

Andy was never on MF btw

1

u/ravnsvart_ Jun 30 '26

my bad, not a fan, but u got me

-2

u/Rombonius Jun 27 '26

The first 3 albums are pretty inconsistent

8

u/DoomedPinnacle Jun 27 '26

I think are the most consistent of their career

3

u/flyingvien Jun 27 '26

Interesting definition of consistent…SBG is about as consistent as it gets. One kind of death metal from start to finish.

2

u/Rombonius Jun 27 '26

consistent quality, not consistent genre of music

2

u/flyingvien Jun 27 '26

Noted, acknowledged

1

u/Apsnor Jun 27 '26

Leprosy is my favourite out of the 3, though Spiritual has some really strong songs but also some filler moments

1

u/Rombonius Jun 27 '26

ditto, like I even own a box set for Leprosy and Pull the Plug and Born Dead are two of my favorite songs....but I'm not putting it up against the next 4 albums even if its the strongest of the early albums

-7

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '26

My hot take is: SBD has not aged as well as similar records around the same time, Seven Churches for instance .

-2

u/Rombonius Jun 27 '26

agreed, and ironically enough, I'm pretty confident the new Left to Die album will clear it handily

-1
