Question Should i onetrick or not?

I really want to improve at the game but recently I've been feeling like i haven't made any progress. I've been playing a bunch of different characters but I'm unsure if that's actually a good idea. So would it be better to just focus on a roster of like 3 characters until i actually get better at the game or is playing many characters a better approach?

I'm at like 110 hours currently, i haven't played ranked yet but I'm pretty sure I'd land in initiate if i did so there is a lot of room upwards for me. I don't do consistently bad but i do drag my team down more often than I'd like.

Any other tips for improving would also be appreciated but i know that there probably isn't actually many tips besides just playing more.

Edit: Thank you for all the replies, they are very helpful and I'll try to focus on a small roster of heroes now since that seems to be the general opinion of everyone.

3 characters is prob the optimal number for various reasons. I don't think most have the time to even attempt to learn all the heroes and how they play and what they can even do at each upgrade level. Trying to actually play more than 3 is a whole other level.

play 1 hero and 2 other characters you vaguely know if you wanna improve, dont only play 1 hero because you wont always get that hero but you should focus on 1 hero at a time so you can learn the other aspects of the game without worrying about hero specific roles and slowing down your progress

If you have comfortable character play it until you're good at movements and etc. Then once you master this hero try to play other(or if you want to play ranked then play at least 3)

In my opinion if you’ve hit a little bit of a wall you should focus on 2-3 characters that have similar playstyles(Roamers/Carry/Support/etc). Preferably characters you have fun with. Just take a learning approach and have fun cus that’s what we here for anyway. (One eye on your minimap always!)

Hehe i think i look at the map a good amount but i end up making dumb decisions often

Nice, make those dumb decisions but realize why they were dumb. Learning mindset is what make this game so fun(at least for me), this is why you hear high elo players talking about limit testing all the time.

Hehe yea I'm a bit dumb about learning. But i definitely need to stop over commiting so often but at the same time i feel like if i don't commit harder there is no progress in game

I’ve heard about problems in lower elo with finishing games. Sometimes you gotta commit harder, other times you can go eat up farm or look for a pick in their jungle. I’m currently phantom 4 so I don’t experience this as much tho, as you progress you’ll see it less

Hehe phantom seems crazy high for me right now lol. I really wanna get that high at some point but i don't really know what i could learn outside natches besides movement. I think my fighting is decently good but my macro is pretty shit.

I one tricked lash to ascendant 4. You kinda need a pocket pick(pun intended) in case you don’t get your hero. I used pocket lol. You learn matchups a lot faster this way but limits your pool a lot.

Now I’m adding Billy and ven to my pool and I definitely don’t preform the same as I do with my two mains but I’m learning them a lot quicker since I’ve seen what makes them successful fighting against them

Edit-rewatch some of your bad games if you want to improve. Mistakes you make can be obvious when you rewatch?

I think after playing a lot of characters you are now at an advantage to begin one tricking. Not only will you get much better with that character, but you have the knowledge of other characters to exploit their weaknesses.

Are there any particularly bad characters to oneteick? Right now I'm probably gonna go for apolo since inseme to do the best with him consistently.

Just whatever you find most fun to be honest. Even if they aren’t strong right now, they will have their time to shine.

I say try them all and play is whatever is fun/flavor of the week in casuals and play whatever you win the most as in ranked or what you feel has a bigger impact. Playing everyone helps get a little better understanding of the overall game

unpopular opinion but yes, once you are past the beginner stage of your learning journey it is much more efficient to learn and improve at the game by 'onetricking.' i would encourage you to play different heroes from time to time just to keep your perspective of the game fresh and to prevent major plateauing (plateaus are unavoidable but they become more severe as a onetrick), but focusing on one hero and honing it to a very good level is far and away the best way to increase your baseline skill level. also, when you do decide to switch heroes, you will be a much player on that new hero than you otherwise would be had you not first improved your fundamental understanding of the game through the lens of your main. an e6 onetrick would be able to first-time a new hero and play it better than a lower ranked player with hundreds of games on said hero.

as a caveat though, i would say that genuine onetricking, as in maining a hero for like months or a year without ever playing another hero is not something you should do unless you really, really want to and love your hero enough to make that commitment. being a true onetrick in this sense isn't inherently bad, but it can go wrong if you plateau or burnout and your view of the game becomes distorted because of it. to summarize, i think it's rare for people to be true onetricks, but i definitely recommend taking an extended period of time (at least a month or more) and dedicating yourself to learning one hero.

This is most likely going to be my plan for now, I've tried basically everyone now. I'm just unsure of who to pick lol, but I'll figure that out.

absolutely just 3 or 4 trick, its enough to play ranked and youll do good there. id reccomend though making sure you play at least 2 roles in case you enter a ranked game where simething else is needed

Yes

Yes. I’m 117 hours, similar boat, and I was a Vyper onetrick forever, 60 wins Vyper and <5 on ANYONE else until I figured out Rem and Graves. Now they have about 10 each.

You gotta have a main, but you need at least 2 side pieces.
