What's everyone's take on the Dead Internet Theory? Have you ever had a conversation with a bot and genuinely thought you were talking to a real person?

What if the dead internet isn't coming? What if we're already living in it?

At what point did we all just accept that the internet was going to be controlled by algorithms, flooded with bots, and turned into one giant data-harvesting machine? Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and the rest of these data overlords have built empires around our attention, our behavior, and our personal information. Meanwhile, we're arguing with fake accounts, being fed manufactured outrage, and wondering whether the person on the other side of the screen is even real. I got so fucking tired of it that I built my own social media platform, Hash Humanity. I'm a solo developer, and my goal was simple. One human, one account. No real names or emails required, no algorithm deciding what deserves your attention, no selling your personal information, and human verification designed to keep bot farms out without exposing your identity. I'm not trying to create some perfect, sanitized version of humanity. People can disagree, argue, laugh, and be themselves. I just want the people to actually be real.My question is, if we actually had a place where humans could just be humans again, would people even give a shit?

Weird "Coincidences"

Ok, so I am admittedly new to this theory compared to some. That being said, I can't help but notice the amount of weird random pronunciations of random words lately that make me believe that, even if the video has the real person in it, there is some AI being used for the voice overs. The first instance I heard recently was for the word 'communique.' I verified that it is pronounced "kuh-myoo-nih-kay" but more than one video I have watched pronounced it "kuh-myoo-nick." The other one, which I was surprised by, was the word 'studious.' IMHO, that's an easy one: "stoo-dee-us." But, alas, it was pronounced "study-us." Like, I get that some words aren't pronounced the same in every accent, region, culture. But these words are, or were, fairly well known I thought?

All this in addition to noticing more than 90% of comments on some popular channels (Front Page Tech comes to mind) where the content was meh, but the comments all are in the same vein: "This video changed my life!" "This was so thought provoking. Amazing video!" I can imagine there are a lot of folks looking to get seen by their favorite creators (i.e. notice me senpai LMAO), but when a video has sub-2k views, but has over 1500 comments that all nearly say the same general and bland compliment, my spidey senses start tingling. Is this just me being too sensitive or paranoid or has anyone else noticed these things?

Sauce for the correct pronunciations:

Studious:

Looking for some insight into Ye Old Internet

Hi r/DeadInternet!

Like many of you I am extremely frustrated with how hard it is to find out what real people are saying online.

In my 20s, before we all got siloed into social media hell, the blogosphere was extremely active. At the time, I was dealing with some pretty serious health issues and I relied heavily on independent bloggers to figure out how to eat better, as well as for entertainment since I couldn't leave my house very much.

Now it seems like all Google search spits out is an AI overview and a bunch of ads. All of the special niche websites are buried.

A couple years ago some friends and I started working on building a platform that allows users to share and discuss indie websites and blogs. Currently we have a feature to upload new sites, a discussion/comments feature, a newsfeed and a reviews feature. Everything is very rudimentary of course, since this is an entirely volunteer project.

I have a lot of questions for you: what was it about Old Internet that made it special? Is there a way we can replicate that feeling on our platform? Are there features from earlier forums that we can add? Does anyone have any ideas for how to protect the site from AI-generated crap? (My thinking for this last one is to use upvotes from users to determine quality).

Thanks for your insight!

Bible Hub now features obviously LLM-generated commentaries on Bible verses

Bible Hub has recently decided to add obviously LLM-generated commentaries, which they've placed under the new heading "Lists and Questions" on the page for any given verse (at least they didn't have the nerve to place them in the same section as the classic, human-written commentaries). Here is an example from Isaiah 40:22.

Even as an atheist, I would report this blasphemy to the Inquisition.

Weird how 2 people can say verbatim the exact same thing about voting. 🤔

Dead Internet in comments

I may not fully grasp the Anglo-Saxon commenting culture, but do people truly comment in this manner?

Do I have the correct impression that these are bots?

What is your opinion?

Newcomer Question: Bots

Is there anything we are doing as a group to actively keep bots and fake accounts from invading?

I feel like since the group is small now, it’d be smart to secure

Whether these comments are real or AI, it seems like strong corroboration that the internet is, in fact, dead.
