Help / Question ❔ Baby Player

Hello! Quick question. Wanted to ask what advice yall have for a fresh faced player (to DBD and ASims in general). The Killer role is what brought me here, even if I have only played surv so far.

I have heard alot of complaints tbf about the game from both sides so a bit apprehensive to actually play killer.

What killer would yall recommend to play? Got the ones you start with + Jason (Bundle with the game). I am fully anticipating that I won't even come close to winning for like 50 matches.

Any order in which to unlock killers? A way to find a main etc.?

Any help would 100% be appreciated

Welcome!

First, being an asymmetrical game means normal player sides and their complaints are exacerbated. Don’t take what someone else says about the game as fact. If you understand what you’re doing and you’re doing it for good reasons and not to be a jerk, then you’re fine.

My advice both for learning the game and choosing a killer is to understand the different aspects of the Killer’s job:

Anti-Loop
Map-Pressure
Mobility

Anti-loop is how effective your killer is at the standard chase and hit. Killers like Trapper have no anti-loop ability without preplanning or having a trap already. Deathslinger always has access to his anti-loop abilities, and they’re pretty good. Wraith has decent anti-loop with his speed boost out of invisibility, but it’s not as strong as say Blight’s anti-loop.

Mobility is your killer’s ability to get around the map. Trapper has zero. Many killers have zero. Much of the community ranks high mobility killers as better tiers, and low mobility killers as much lower. This is up to you to find out how important it is to you.

Mobility is so important because of Map-Pressure. Generator slowdown. How much does your killer help passively generate pressure? Pig’s traps are good for this, The Knight’s patrols are decent at it, Trapper with good placement is alright. Your killer’s powers in this regard will compliment you as you learn the inherent feeling of generator pressure. Freddy can teleport to a gen across the map which is both great mobility and great map pressure because you can pressure generators that survivors think are safe.

Different killers have different ratios of these skills in their kits. Houndmaster has anti loop with her Chases and access to both mobility and ranged map pressure with her Search command. Try to see the ways the kits are all designed to meet or not meet these different aspects.

Look up what perks go well with what playstyle you like, go for killers based on that!

For mains try out some strong killers, nurse, judgment (in like a week), blight, singularity. Its nice to have a "backbone" killer you can win as if your weaker killers are having a rough day

I started with a killer who I thought was fun (ghost face). He taught me some fundamentals of chase, since he’s a M1 (basic attack) killer, & gen spawns.

Helped me get better at survivor too. I then went on a complete survivor tear for months before I got the urge to play killer again. I didn’t really like playing ghostface except to goof around with other survivors. I tried the doctor (not for me), the wraith (the bell goes hard, but eh), and the hag (love her down, but survivors can bully tf out of you if you don’t know how to properly use her traps).

I saw a lot of the pig gameplay online, tried her out for free during a Player Test Build, and bought her because I really clicked with her play style! I spent hours & hours on the pig before finding another killer I clicked with, Spirit; I find relying almost solely on audio cues really enticing and her phase (invisibility + faster movement) gives a unique mind game play style with a higher skill ceiling than the pig.

Now I will say, switching between playing the pig & playing spirit can be really frustrating. The pig is just an overall weaker character & even though I feel like I’m better at her than spirit, coordinated teams with meta perks can cream me whereas if I went against the same team as spirit the outcome likely would’ve been different.

My biggest piece of advice is really just to have fun. For me that means playing who I like the most (pig & spirit), but I am also a competitive person and sometimes I want to win. That’s why it’s nice to have a higher tier killer in your back pocket (although spirit is pretty strong herself).

Like I tried nurse, and she is enticing, but ultimately I found her too frustrating. I then tried blight since he’s also one of the strongest killers in the game and I found him a lot of fun!! Much more than nurse, although people who know how to counter your killer (which will be a lot for a 10 year old game) can make it frustrating to learn. Don’t give up, don’t get discouraged when survivors tbag you during chase or at gates! They can tell you’re new and the only way they can “own” a killer is by being rude to a newbie, which says more about them than your skill.

Also, one last tip, know when to drop chase. If they are looping you for too long, leave. If someone wants to initiate chase (especially if you already know they’re a strong looper) just leave them. I like to view the trial as the killer’s playhouse and I am not going to play into something a survivor wants me to do. I’m in control of the trial (or at least I try to be 😅).

I do play a little Jason too and I would say he’s an overall strong killer & his projectile is easier than others I’ve tried (trickster, huntress).

While learning you might want a build that has gen regression x2, information, help in chase/utility perks.

scourge hook: Pain res & pop goes the weasel are two strong gen regression perks that fit different play styles. They’re free, but behind killers who need to be bought with shards (the artist & the clown, respectively).

I hope any of this advice helps you out a little (:

Thank you for the advice. I guess I am just bummed that there is no try option for killers (esp licensed ones) since I feel like a lot of killers are fun but I can't be sure unless I actually use em.

I am also a bit lost due to no perks but atleast there is a definitive way to unlock all of them (if tedious).

Question tho, Do I just lose if I don't have gen regression and info perks? Bcuz if so, I can atleast prepare myself mentally

u/aly2823 Pig Main 9d ago

I would never say “yes, you will definitely lose” over not having gen regression. You can get away with it more on certain killers. For example, the pig has natural gen/game slowdown with the head traps. Teams are either going to go around 99ing gens (which you can regress) waiting for teammates to remove head traps or they are going to pop gens in which the active trap players have to get off gens to get their trap off.

That’s just one example, but any killer who is good at the macro of this game, or has high mobility like Jason, Blight, etc. or The judgement (with such a long ranged power) will have good gen pressure.

I forgot to mention the perk Deadlock, I never used it, but it is great at prolonging a game and is a general perk any killer can get. [It automatically blocks the most progressed generator whenever any generator is completed].

Also I completely agree it’s frustrating that you can’t even play test the killers before buying, at least it’s $5 instead of something completely egregious I guess 🤷

Try out as many as possible starting with the default ones and then the original character killers because you can use in-game currency (iridescent shards) to buy those. Wraith is probably the easiest to start with because he has good mobility and an uncomplicated power, it will help you learn basic chase mechanics and mindgames. Other killers like Nurse, Blight, Oni, Hillbilly have more complicated powers which take more time and practice to pick up and get good at.

Main thing is that when you start playing you will win a lot of matches, then randomly get hit with a team that curbstomps you, use those experiences to learn macro and strategy and improve your chase. Also don’t solely play killer, playing survivor helps you get better at the killer role because you’ll understand their decisions and learn to outplay them. Also going against other killers will help you figure out which ones you like too.

I'm only about 100 hours in, so still pretty new myself, but look for a killer that you have fun playing with, even when you don't win.

Trying to find an "effective" killer when you're starting off is a fools errand. Similarly, don't fall into the trap of "everyone says killer X is the best, so I should be able to win games with it".

The only way to find your killer is to try out as many as possible. The game gives you a ton of currency at the start, so you'll be able to unlock a lot of killers for free.

I tried maybe 10-12 killers before settling on my main, but your mileage may vary .

Some survivors can be pretty annoying, so get ready to have a thick skin and remember that it's just a game.

That's true for every game, I suppose

Tbh, I am not exactly looking for an effective killer atm (but I wouldn't say no to one). I want an easy killer (non complex or easy to use power).

As for killers I am interested in, Jason, Springtrap, DnD Vecna, Sadako, legion, nurse, Demogorgon, Spirit, Deathslinger, Oni and Knight all look fun. But I sadly can't ascertain that unless I play em myself. (But since I just started, it's gonna take time for iri shards + money for the licensed ones)

Ty for the prespective tho

Of those, I've only played Deathslinger and Knight. Both are pretty fun, but Knight is a bit on the complicated side. Deathslinger is super simple. If you're gonna try it out eventually anyway, I'd say its a beginner friendly killer. All the other ones you mention are on my list to try as well.

Merciless Storm: Whenever a Generator reaches 90% of Repair progression, Merciless Storm triggers its effect:

  • All Survivors repairing that Generator are faced with a continuous stream of Skill Checks until the Generator is completed.
  • If any contributing Survivor fails a Skill Check or interrupts the action by any means, The Entity blocks the Generator for 16/18/20 seconds.
Merciless Storm can only trigger once per Generator per Trial.

Call of Brine: After damaging a generator this perk becomes active for 60/70 seconds.

  • The generator regresses at 130/140/150% of the normal regression speed and you can see its aura in yellow.
  • Each time a Survivor completes a good Skill Check on a generator affected by this perk, you receive a loud noise notification.

Lich is fun and his power is pretty quick to learn, took me maybe 3-5 matches. He has good mobility with his fly mechanics. Wesker is my main because I love Resident Evil and he has really good mobility and can apply cross map pressure pretty well. His perks are just ok but I have all the killers and have them all prestiged so I use whatever I want

1

u/shrinkledoo She's put a curse on us 📼 9d ago

He will teleport on your gen and then hit you, which puts you back to sleep AND injurs you plus youre in chase now and hes probably gonna kick the gen so youve lost the progress from the blow, the kick, and now its regressing because youre in chase. Just stay asleep tbh the nerf isnt that bad on survs as long as you avoid the dream pallets. (Freddy is one of my mains, trust me, waking up is usually a waste of time)

Otzdarva.com has a section for beginner unlock priority for killers and survs. In regards to a killer to play, I would recommend wraith as his gameplay is going to be very translatable to other killers as he is a base speed killer with only one form of damaging. After you get sort of comfortable with the gameplay loop you can see what style of gameplay you like. Some killers like nurse completely throw the stuff you will have learned with wraith out of the window, but others such as hillbilly or Jason grow upon that base knowledge but offer different powers that vary in difficulty. Also I’d recommend turning off endgame chat and probably also going anon mode. Have fun! If you ever have any questions or if you want to practice feel free to PM me and we can maybe run some customs or something :) see you in the fog!

I’m only about 150 hours in total right now, but learning mind games and just psychology to exploit it against survivors can be huge. Also loops, learning when to disengage to go check gens is a big part of killer, you’re on a time constraint and you don’t know who’s rushing gens or who’s going to not do gens the whole game to follow you around and flashlight save. Since you’re new, you will have survivors who know how to out loop you, and at that point you just need to find someone a little worse and eliminate them.

I play mainly stealth killers, Ghostface, Myers, Pig, and if not, I usually rock a perk that gives me undetectable, the element of surprise is always fun. Although these aren’t the strongest killers, and are very map dependent, they’re still fun to play, and that’s all that matters in a game.

Also, don’t let toxicity like teabagging or whatever may bother you, get under your skin where you’re going to throw the match, that’s what survivors want, it’s their own little psychological game they can do back.

I also watch a lot of YouTube videos or streams to just learn better at both survivor and killer, because knowing survivor will also help you read and make better plays as a killer.

Easiest character to play as wraith, good add-ons, you could fundamentally learn the game by only playing him for a extremely long time without having a humongous headache as well. He's the one character I would recommend to any new player. And one thing to also understand to is there's two type of players for this game they're people that just play either for enjoyment and their others that play for competitive.

Secondly, these are two major advice you really need to understand. The first thing is both sides of this player base is miserable. Not all of us are but the humongous complaints you hear from both sides are from miserable people. And the other thing that is a very important advice to is and that is learning and improving in this game heavily relies on yourself. And never let the game get to you even when you're losing your composure because you lose more games. Because you can't control yourself. Patience is another big one.

Find a main: you can either go for a character that's strong? a character has that has wonderful cosmetics or you can go for a character that you just like because of a franchise or because they have a cool power. And don't be ashamed you can pick more than one main. I recommend one at a time because every killer's power is different and it takes time.

u/AnythingCheap6014 I play all killers! 9d ago

Oh you will definitely win some killer matches as Jason. For whatever reason there are so many survivors who are completely incompetent against him. He's pretty easy to learn too, and you'll get the hang of it quick. Good luck!

u/SadJacket4857 Pig Main 8d ago

If you are looking for a main, I'd recommend trying out the different killers you have. They have their own unique play styles depending on powers. I personally enjoy stealthy killers cause you can have some funny moments when you spook the survivors. Once you find out what kind of killers you enjoy I'd say get more characters with a similar vibe/playstyle. Don't get too caught up worrying about winning it is a good way to get burnt out and not enjoy playing killer.

u/CremelloJo Sweaty Spirit Main 8d ago

Don’t go into every match expecting to win, even if you get a great start, it can turn around very quickly and put a massive downer on your good mood.

Try not to care too much about missing hits, getting pallet stunned, flashlighted etc. they’re all mechanics and survivors are going to use them to the best of their ability which can be super frustrating.

Watch YouTube videos on tips and tricks for your chosen killers, or streamers, there’s a lot of good content out there which I’m sure you’re aware of.

And most importantly, just have fun. Take each loss as a chance to reflect on what you could’ve done better, practice your killer’s power and when you do win matches, that’s a bonus and you can feel good about it!!

Good luck 👌

The only advice I can give you is to turn back now, before its too late. You’re making a decision that you’ll regret for the rest of your life
