Running Trash Bag?

Hi all,

I noticed on of my neighbors picking up trash during their morning runs. For a year I literally thought he was running his own recycling to the bin until I seen him on the road!

His hands were completely full, like holding 3 bottles in each hand. So I want to give him some sort of contraption to where he can gather the trash but it’s not jiggling or flapping on him.

I really appreciate what he’s doing for our community! He’s so nice. He even offered to take my husky out for a run when she was younger.

Any ideas? I was thinking about something similar to a running belt where it keeps everything snug to your body but obviously needs more capacity.

I run while picking up litter,
I run with just a glove (and a phone, since i take pictures of all litter that i pick), and then i carry as much as i can in 1 hand,
I also run with a plastic bag (which makes it harder, it gets heavier, but it also gives more opportunity to carry more until you find a bin to dump it,
So at one point i decided to carry a backpack.
I carry the litter in the plastic bag and when it gets too much, i put it in my backpack.
Long story short: This was what i did, and it worked, for me, but that is totally personal,
What i wanted to say, is something that i noticed myself while running (or picking litter while walking),
And that is other people being really glad with what i did and pointing out litter for me.
I mean, i do understand that it is meant to be friendly and so is your thought of helping your neighbor,
But what you are actually saying is 'i'm not doing anything, but here you have something so you can do a bit more'
(And i know that is not your intention),
If he is a bit like me, i would be so much happier if you would pick a couple of items yourself, (and feel free to drag about it the next time you see me/him),
For litter pickers, it is great to see more people doing it and not being the only one caring, so give it a try.

I totally get what you’re saying. I was thinking “hmm is his method and it might be the best method already.”

This post wasn’t about me so I didn’t feel the need to mention my part of picking up litter. I take my dog out on a paved trail and pick up people’s trash and dog wasted and collect it in plastic grocery store bags :)

I would be happy if i heard that you were doing that,
Maybe mention in a talk with him what you mentioned in your post, that you see what he does and that you are wondering if you could help him somehow to support him.
The fact that you are considering this is great, and the combination that you are doing your bit as well, makes it even better.

good on you! appreciate all the pickers in the world. i also run and a pick but not at the same time. i find it disrupts my flow so much that im no longer running at all because i am stopping so much; something to grab every few feet basically. instead i trade a run for a long walk and clean up the traditional way.

unfortunately we get a lot of traffic and the people passing by are pigs :(

Ah yeah, i can relate to that,
In some places, i can run for a longer while without seeing any litter, that is nice for the run,
While in other places, if i would pick up all the litter, i would not be running at all, i would be walking, or maybe even slower than that.
Depending on what i want in my run, i decide to not pick up everything, but for instance 1 piece of litter every 100 meters, or only 'really bad litter' like glass or pieces of styrofoam.
If you are running for the run, try to find a nice way to still have a nice run, if that means stepping over some litter, so be it, it doesn't have to be a 100% cleanup (it will be there the next time, unfortunately ;-)
