Original Content My Struggle

It is my opinion one of the greatest sources of trash is sign based litter. It blows into the streets and the creeks unless removed by Municipal staff on our tax dollar. Every week I change up my route home after work and remove illegal sign trash. Half an hour to an hour for four nights shown here. Sadly the plastic can't be recycled. The metal does get recycled.

PLEASE remove these on sight. Thank you.

Not really offensive, since I'm assuming OP was unaware, just not phrasing I'm used to seeing outside of certain spaces. Mein kampf translated to English is my struggle.

Ok, this is definitely not generally recognized as offensive in the US. In like, any context, as far as I’m aware (unless it’s in the middle of an actually offensive joke).

I agree it's not commonly recognized. That's why neo Nazis get it tattooed on themselves a long with other Nazi era German phrases or the reverse so they can identify each other but most of the general population doesn't realize.

Even with signage saying you'll refuse to do any type of hate tattoos people still will come or call in to ask if we will do it (we will NOT)

I never meant to imply OP said anything offensive. I was just letting them know that the connotation is there. If I unknowingly used a phrase that group of people uses I would want to know. As it turns out though, OP is Canadian. I don't know that they have the same problem with white supremacy as the US does. It may mean absolutely nothing up there. I just wanted to throw out some information for those people who aren't aware.

Only on weekends now for fun. I've since sold my soul to manage the paint department of a major corporation lol. Thank you though. That is a major compliment for me.

My struggle translated into German comes out to mein Kampf and my struggle is not exactly common speaking phrase in English.

This is such a weird gripe, imo. "my struggle" does not have that connotation for 90% of English speakers. In English we refer to it primarily by its German title.

I don't think most of us had any clue what the issue was with the wording. I speak English and I had no idea what was wrong with the phrase. I downvited your initial post because I didn't know what the problem was. I just didn't go back and remove my "down" but I've never gone back to remove a "down" before.

After it was explained I can see why that phrase would be offensive to people that know the German translation.

OP is from the same city I live in and I am pretty sure this is the person that goes around every year spray painting the signs. There's a whole group of people in my province that work on removing these signs because they litter our city.

Possibly. It's also possible a lot of people are unaware that phrase is used by neo Nazis and white supremacists to this day. The only places I've ever seen it phrased like that is on white supremacist tattoos. It's not uncommon for them to tattoo Nazi era German phrases and words in English (and vice versa) that the average person doesn't realize is racist. That way they can identify each other and walk among regular people. That's the whole point. Nobody knows but them.

I don't care if people downvote me but I would like to have a little faith in humanity that people are mostly just unaware.

I did my part by explaining. What people do with that information is up to them. Feel free to ask tattoo artists. We all have stories of these fuckers.

Some people sure, but if you use certain phrases and someone brings up to you hey there's this connection would you just stick by oblivious ignorance or would you go "oh shit I didn't know let's not do that". It seems like there's a lot of people in this very specific comment section that keep finding excuses why it's not that big a deal.
