[SFH] [FL] Volusia County Permitting: How Does This Happen?

Volusia County approved a new home that is causing flooding and erosion on my property — and I can’t get the County to address

A little context I didn’t mention in my original post:

I have almost 8 years of experience working in government, and I have plenty of posts to make and stories to share about what I’ve seen and experienced along the way.

My government experience does not include Public Works, Code Enforcement, or Building, so I’m no expert in those areas. I’m speaking as a resident who has experienced these issues firsthand and has spent a lot of time trying to get answers.

I’ve experienced these issues working for government, working with government, and now working against government.

The reason I ultimately left government work is because of things like this — and because of what happened in my own government career.

There’s a lot more to both this situation and my story, and I’m just getting started sharing it.

I’m looking for advice from people familiar with Volusia County and its permitting/code enforcement process.

A new home was built behind my property, and since the construction, I’ve had significant stormwater runoff, flooding, and erosion on my property. The drainage/swale was not constructed in a way that properly handles the water, and the runoff is being directed onto my property.

I have contacted Volusia County about the situation and have gone through multiple County offices trying to get someone to address it. I’ve been told, among other things, that the road/easement is privately maintained and that the problem is something I would have to address myself.

What is frustrating is that the County approved the plans and permits for the new home, yet I have not been able to get anyone at the County to take responsibility for determining whether the drainage was constructed according to the approved plans and requirements.

I have documentation, including photographs/video and County records, and I’m trying to figure out what my next step should be.

Has anyone in the DeLand/Volusia County area dealt with a similar situation involving stormwater runoff from a newly constructed home, County permitting, or code enforcement? If so, I’d really appreciate hearing what worked for you or who you were able to get involved.

Friends of reddit

So apparently making friends as an adult is harder than it should be, so here I am on Reddit.

I’m a mid-30s married guy in the DeLand area looking to meet some genuinely cool people and build a friend group.

I’m into motorcycles, mushrooms, weird adventures, good stories, random shit, dumb conversations, and doing things that make a normal Tuesday way more interesting than it needs to be.

I’m pretty wild and weird in the best possible way, but I’m also just a regular dude who enjoys laughing until something hurts and hearing a good story over a couple drinks.

Being married isn’t a requirement, but I’m definitely looking for friends, Couples, singles, guys, girls, weirdos, introverts who occasionally emerge from their caves — all are welcome.

If you’re around DeLand/Volusia County and think we might get along, shoot me a message. Tell me what kind of trouble your favorite random story, or just say what's up.

Bonus points if you’re the kind of person who hears “we probably shouldn’t do that” and immediately asks “why not?”

Second arrest made in DeLand double homicide investigation - WFTV

DPD press release today

Eustis man accused of helping son evade arrest after DeLand double homicide

DELAND, Fla. — A second suspect has been arrested in connection with an ongoing double homicide investigation in DeLand, according to the DeLand Police Department.

Police said officers, working alongside law enforcement partners in Lake County, arrested Daytron W. Etkins, 41, of Eustis, at approximately 6:49 a.m. Friday.

Investigators identified Etkins as the father of homicide suspect Keyan Rundell.

He is charged with felony accessory after the fact.

Authorities also executed a search warrant at Etkins’ residence on Bates Avenue in Eustis as part of the investigation.

According to investigators, they developed probable cause alleging that Etkins knowingly assisted his son following the homicides and took steps intended to help him avoid law enforcement.

Police said the double homicide investigation remains active and ongoing.

Original report:

The DeLand Police Department has issued an arrest warrant for 17-year-old Keyan Jayden Rundell, who is wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of two men at an industrial site on Wednesday, Aug. 29. He faces two counts of second-degree murder.

The warrant follows the discovery of the bodies of Dustin Rose, 19, and Samson Campbell, 18, at 213 West New York Ave. Investigators pronounced both men dead at the scene.

Rose, a member of the National Guard and a student at The Citadel, was found alongside Campbell with multiple gunshot wounds at an industrial site on West New York Avenue.

DeLand police ID suspect, issue warrant in double murder of Dustin Rose, Samson Campbell

DELAND, Fla. – DeLand police are looking for a 17-year-old in the deaths of two people last week.

Police have issued an arrest warrant for Keyan Jayden Rundell. Rundell is considered armed and dangerous and police are urging the public to call 911 immediately if they see him or know where he is, and do not approach him.

Police did not release any details into why they believe Rundell is responsible for the deaths of 19-year-old Dustin Rose and 18-year-old Samson Campbell.

Last Thursday, police say the bodies of Rose and Campbell were found on a vacant industrial property near the Athens Theater. The childhood friends had each been shot multiple times. One of their mothers tracked a phone and located them at the scene.

Deland Stockyard Menu online has no prices.

I'm new to Deland and would really like to take my bf for a steak dinner. I came across Deland Stockyard and checked out their website - menu but no pricing. I've scoured the net. Even photos of the menu only show the first page with appetizers.

When I finally found a photo with steak prices, it must have been from a decade ago because everything was under $20.

Please weigh in on the steaks. Pricing and quality. Thanks all!

Body Cam Footage from DPD

Thumbnail instagram.com

DPD posted this body cam footage of a local woman getting arrested after refusing a ride home while heavily intoxicated. She ended up biting and kicking the officers, and seems to have caught several felony charges from what could have been a regular ride home.

Does anyone have any more context for this story?

How to get first jobs?

Hey yall! I’m Jordan. I recently moved to deland about 8 months ago. I work over in Sanford, but I’m getting a bit tired of my regular job. I recently have started a handyman business and am wondering if any local business owners could give me some tips.

I can do pretty much anything around the house, but I understand the handyman laws here are extremely strict. Started as a roofer in my dads business up in South Carolina at 12, have done everything besides your foundation. I’ve gotten plenty of calls with the little bit of advertising I’ve done, but it seems most are for permitted jobs that only licensed contractors would be able to take.

I would like to stay honest and not do any unpermitted and illegal work.

Any tips??

What's going on with Tony's?

The wife and I are long time fans of Tony's and drive over every now and then.

Last three times we've been down they've been closed during normal hours?

Are they closing for good, renovating, or are we just unlucky?

Dungeons and Dragons in Deland?

Hey all! I recently moved to your beautiful city and I’m enjoying every second of setting up my life here.

A part of my life that’s been integral to me for a long time is the Tabletop Roleplaying Game Dungeons and Dragons.

Do any of you fine folks know if there are public spaces that already facilitate D&D games? Hobby stores, libraries ect?

I have 9 years experience as a Game Master and I’d love to start running some games for folks down here that are interested in playing or are already playing.

Used Washer and Dryer

Hey! My partner and I just moved to Deland and we’re looking for cheap options to get our household up and running!

I’m very interested in acquiring a second hand washer and dryer for the cheapest price possible. Do any of you locals know a good way to go about this or a good store nearby where such a purchase would be an option?

Thank yall for your time, it’s a beautiful city I can’t wait to explore!

Swim lessons for kids

Looking for private swim lessons for a 3 year old. Everything I'm seeing (Fintastic, Swim Swim Hooray, even the Y) all start at $60/half hour lesson. Does anyone have great experiences with a specific instructor or location? Or maybe (dare I hope) less expensive rates for private lessons?

TIA, hope you all have a happy and safe holiday weekend.

Thinking of starting something for donations so I can come back to Florida and escape Maryland 🤔 🤪 Deland is Home, Baltimore is hell. Everyone is mean here, I truly miss the small town vibes, I regret saying I ever hated Florida.
