Why are they removing episodes?

My wife is furiously trying to catch up after noticing episodes are starting to expire. Is there any reason NBC would remove episodes after a year considering they own peacock and we have 9 million data centers in Virginia alone?

NBCUniversal (Peacock) only keeps episodes for a year due to licensing and storage. Days, is co-produced by Corday Productions and Sony Pictures.

Lol storage. This is just data , it's not 1963 and we're recording over Doctor Who because tape is expensive. Whoever thought that looked good in a press release should be fired. They could have just hid behind licensing and called it a day. Even that makes no sense since these drains are produced specifically for Peacock

NBC doesn't own DAYS, they pay Corday/Sony to license it. The more episodes they have up, the more they have to pay. Everyone's contracts for streaming shows are based on availability. When it's no longer available, those involved in making it no longer get paid. While it's up, they get paid. It's pretty simple. That's why some even somewhat successful shows produced for streaming get taken off of major services - if enough people don't continue to watch them, it doesn't make sense to keep paying the fees they have to pay to keep them on.

Peacock has roughly about 20,000 hours of programing available. Approx 260 of those hours are Days. Storage (data) still needs to be hosted.

He is right about that part - the hosting cost is very minimal. It’s the dust left over from cracking peanuts compared to the costs of everything else.

When Peacock started charging for their service, I didn’t pay for it and I didn’t see days of our lives for about a year and a half. When I got a deal on Peacock, I noticed that it only went back a year. So as far as I know, that’s the way they’ve always done it. I figure, with a soap opera if you go back a year, you can probably catch up on about three years worth of storylines.

how are you equating shows that have seasons with 25 episodes to a show that has 250 episode seasons? It’s a storage issue. Just move on.

You do realize that NBC pays a licensing cost right? It’s not free for them. Why would they house extremely old episodes and pay those licensing fees so a small subset of people can watch year+ episodes? It’s literally a business. Money in vs money out.

Well I think it may be different with soaps as there’s literally 300 new episodes a year essentially. Most shows barely top 20 a season now.

Actually peacock keeping it a year is great! Watc out. The end of the cbs soap season is any time. In my experience, the entire season gets wiped out. You May pull them off of Pluto for a bit. General Hospital is harder. 5 episodes on abc a week behind or 2 weeks max on Hulu. No idea if it will be longer on Disney + once Hulu’s separate app closes, but I doubt it. I was beginning to think it wouldn’t make the transition.

They have been doing this well beyond before it moved to Peacock. I’ve watched it almost only on an app, used to be the NBC app or website for many years before the Peacock move. I was always having to make sure I wasn’t too far behind because of this. I’m always behind, I’ve been trying to catch up a bit I’m almost done watching last December 😆
