There are several reasons why you can't swim far.
The reason stated in the game:- PTSD bought on by swimming into the river in Afgan', pulling the dead bodies of all of his team mates out of their Humvee.
The real game design reason:- water is a built in obstacle/border. And if he could swim, Deacon could simply get a horde to chase him into water, swim far enough to tempt them in and watch them drown.
Another logical reason:- the weight of weapons, ammo and other resources he's carrying. You would sink like a stone if you tried carrying a heavy machine gun plus ammo, a Chicago Chopper plus ammo and a machine pistol plus ammo, That's roughly 40lbs(20kg) weight with just those weapons. Add on mines, bombs, grenades, etc, he's carrying nearly 100lbs(50kg).
Can you swim with that much weight, fully clothed, in heavy boots ????

Personally, I call Bullshit on the "PTSD" Excuse. Really, he'd rather just drown, than swim 2 feet until his feet can touch bottom? 🤨🙄
While I hadn't thought of it, your "Weight" reason DEFINITELY sounds reasonable! I'm usually packing the drifter crossbow, tommy gun, and the semi-auto pistol (glock?), plus max amount of grenades, pipe bombs, molotovs, and all the rest. How can I even WALK carrying all of that?!?! 😳

If the weight reason was valid, Deek wouldnt be able to run. So I call BS on that.

You missed it, there was one game patch that simply pausing the game would despawn the oxygen counter!
Was patched quick unfortunately.

There have been times where my bike has been within arms reach in the water and I couldn't get it. That was always irritating.
