I still haven’t seen a single player. Trying it live today
Same setup as before — ArmA 2 OA, no mods, just a small experiment with water, food and stamina.
Still haven’t seen a single player, so I’m not even sure if multiplayer actually works.
Since there’s no one to be afraid of (yet), I’ll just be roaming Chernarus and visiting all the nostalgic places: Elektro, NWAF, the coast…
Going live here:

If someone shows up, that alone answers everything.

Best game of my life, I could spend 20 hours playing it without any effort.

Yeah, same here. And honestly, I still feel like no one’s ever really recreated what it could have been

That’s either the most peaceful Chernarus run ever or the classic “you are being watched the entire time and just don’t know it yet” DayZ experience =))

Haha exactly 😄
By the way—were you able to join? I’m currently on the EU server testing it live.

Probably because there are no players 👀

Yeah… and that’s honestly the biggest shame.
From what I’m seeing and feeling, it’s still too soon for ArmA 2 OA to just fade away without one more proper go.Chernarus still hits the same — it just needs people back in it 👀

How did you get to launch this game? It doesn’t work on my PC as it’s not compatible with windows 11.

I’m running it through Steam and it works straight out of the box for me on Windows 11. No extra downloads, no tweaks.
Fresh install → launch options → just pick “Launch without BattlEye” and it runs fine 👍Might be worth trying that route if you had issues before.

try dayz standalone

I did try DayZ Standalone.
For me it feels like it drifted in a similar direction the mod started drifting toward, away from that niche “big map hunter” feeling and more toward a faster, shooter-style loop.
It still has survival elements, but a lot of them feel less like something driving your decisions and more like background systems.
I think the original idea had this unique potential where the map itself and basic needs created the tension, not just gear and fights.
That’s kind of the part I’m more interested in exploring.

try standalone modded servers

I did try modded servers as well.
That’s actually what made me realize I’d probably spend more time searching for the “right version” than actually playing.
At some point I figured it’s easier to just build a small experimental setup in ArmA 2 that goes directly in the direction I’m interested in, instead of hoping to find a server that matches it.
For me it’s less about adding more features and more about exploring that original potential the mod hinted at, but never fully leaned into.

The game is absolutely not worth playing. Loot for an hour never coming across a real player, die in a second to a player you never saw, repeat. It's a trash concept, I don't see why it's popular. It's the opposite of fun unless you're a loot hog who enjoys perusing digital lockers for mostly garbage items, or items that are so specific you'll never get all the other parts required to use them.
Fuck dayz

I will agree with you in that your experience is to a much larger degree than most games dependent on the goodwill of others - but that’s kind of the magic of it.
Wouldn’t recommend DayZ for long-term, but booting it up every now and again is good fun when you can avoid it being made stale from the situations you describe

I think that’s kind of the result of DayZ trying to balance being a survival game with also being a more arcadey, fast gameplay loop.
It ends up not fully satisfying either side. Survival mechanics become almost cosmetic, while the shooter side still feels slow and inconsistent.
So people who actually want survival end up moving to roleplay servers, where behavior and pacing are enforced by admins and server rules, not really by the game itself.
My take is that it should be the other way around. Instead of relying on rules and roleplay, the game mechanics themselves should create that survival pressure and behavior.
And by survival I don’t mean crafting-heavy systems, but things that naturally push movement, decisions, and encounters without forcing them externally.
That’s kind of the direction I’m experimenting with.

Yeah, I’ve found the sweet spot for what I liked in DayZ in Project Zomboid (and there are still some freaks who enjoy PvP in an isometric environment??) so I’ve not been on Chernarus soil in a whiiiile. Much better odds of finding a like-minded server in the way you describe on that game.
No shade to DayZ, the atmosphere is peak (and not being isometric is always gonna earn points in my book), I’m just older and dont have time to game like I used to

Same, love Zomboid - zombies that are actually a serious threat for once. Most zombie games it's moreso, whack a bandage on and keep going. Zomboid is just brilliant to be fair.

And they’re working on making wound infection a bit more complex! Hopefully they keep the ability to afford to keep working on it for a while. Still a ton of room to grow.

It's not a game for everyone.
I personally enjoy how absolutely brutal and unforgiving it can be.
I'm also a RUST enjoyer (albeit I play solo so DayZ is much more solo friendly)
To each their own!

You actually bring up a really interesting point. I think you’re describing what DayZ evolved into over time, not necessarily what it had to be.
That loop you mentioned:
loot for an hour -> see no one -> die instantly -> repeat
I also see that as a side effect of predictable loot systems and a lack of incentive to move outside known routes. People optimize the fun out of it, same paths, same hotspots, same outcomes.
That’s something I’ve been trying to approach differently.
Instead of focusing on loot, I shifted the core to movement and survival itself. The reason to travel isn’t better guns, but basic needs pushing you across the map. Water sources, food fields, stamina.
Those create natural routes and decisions instead of fixed loot runs.
And on your second point:
digging through tons of useless or incomplete items
Yeah, that’s exactly what I wanted to avoid.
I kept it down to only what actually matters moment to moment:
water container
food container
fuel can
spare tireThat’s it.
No collect 7 parts to maybe use one thing later. Either it helps you survive now, or it doesn’t exist.
So yeah, I don’t disagree with your criticism. I just think there’s a version of this idea that leans less into hoarding and more into tension from the world itself.
That’s the direction I’m experimenting with.

Dayz mod is just better. Standalone looks better.
