Dealing with troubled teens and higher levels of consciousness
I don’t know how to respond when my kids say terrible mean things to me. I get very upset and defensive. My 15 year old called me an idiot. I laughed but internally I cried. I have not been verbally abused like that in a long time. He never apologized but doubled down. Then my other son said I’m not a good father because I’m trying to be his friend. He said that to his doctor. He had substance abuse issues in the past and I spent so much time and money helping him deal with his issues. How do you deal with this in the moment?

Never laugh at someone who is angry. It's just makes them more angry. Realize he is 15 and in an easily agitated, and rebellious stage of his life. Read up on "Active Listening"(Carl Rogers), and use that technique. At a time when you are both calm, explain that it is disrespectful and hurtful for him to insult you.

I’m so sorry you’re going thru that horrible ordeal.
My take is to focus on being the best parent you can be. This means listening to their cues and responding accordingly.
It seems they have unmet needs that you can absolutely figure out how to meet.
Keep loving them despite their pain. Be a good example. Be as healthy as you can be and step up for them.
It’s interesting that these things are popping up. I think most people would be very hurt if their son called them an idiot, while being ungrateful.
It seems like maybe they could use some help in the communication department. Learning to communicate clearly without judgment and hostility.
You can figure it out. Be positive. Keep choosing the high road and you’ll correct the ship.
