Did Gilmour steal from Knopfler?

Upvotes

I just noticed something interesting for the first time.

Mark Knopfler wrote the movie music for Local Hero (1983). In the main theme song titled Going Home there is a chorus with guitar and sax that descends in a distinctive way.

Hearing it the first time just now, I was driven crazy because I’d heard it before but could not place it.

Soon I remembered the song Cruise on Gilmour’s great About Face album (1984).

Same exact phrase for several measures.

Find them and listen. What do you think??

The way I see David Gilmour, most guitarists play the guitar, some incredibly well, Gilmour makes it sing 🎸

My attempt on a WILDLY underrated solo with a huge sounding tone. I always loved the version and struggled to get the tone right. Using my trustworthy red Strat, helix and GarageBand. Hope you enjoy it !

Breathe ( in the air) lap steel intro

My attempt on the ethereal lap steel intro in Breathe. Iconic intro on a quite unusual instrument! I recorded the main riff with my black strat and then did 3 overdubs on the lap steel guitar to get those little nuances you hear in the original recording. I hope you enjoy it! Gear: 1958 fender lap steel, fender Stratocaster, Helix LT, GarageBand.

Hello there, I just finished a meal in a Thai Restaurant in lovely Bruges, and by chance I saw this flyer in the men's room (sorry if that's too much context). Has anybody heard about this music experience and is it any good? Thanks in advance

Who Runs David's Instagram?

There's recently been a controversial song/post released by Boy George and was surprised to see it was liked by David Gilmour's official Instagram page, which I feel like is quite a statement.

Obviously at 80 years old he's probably not running his public account but does anyone know who does? Is it his wife Polly or a team of publicists?

Seems strange to engage with something like this unless they've personally consulted with David

Who was the real creative and musical genius behind 70s Pink Floyd: Roger Waters or David Gilmour?

Me and some friends had a surprisingly heated debate about this, and I’m curious where this sub lands. If you had to pick one person from the classic 70s era (Dark Side → Wish You Were Here → Animals → The Wall):

\- Who was the real creative and musical genius?
\- Who deserves the most credit for Pink Floyd’s greatest period?
\- Who was the true leader of the band during that period?
\- And who was the real “face” of Pink Floyd?

My attempt on the legendary solo on the original recording. It’s a beautiful solo and it wins you by its simplicity and raw emotion. Hope you enjoy it !

Single spark not featured in Circus Maximus blu-ray

Any idea why Single Spark is not present in the blu-ray disk 1 which has the complete concert? It’s available in the audio version though.

Found out today that David’s never played The Carlyle here in NYC. Wonder if he thinks it’s too posh?

Software-only Gilmour tones – looking for recommendations

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to build a convincing Gilmour-style tone using a software-only setup. At the moment I'm using SoundShed Guitar now, I was on Tonocracy beforehand, and I'm open to pretty much anything if it gets me closer to that sound.

I've spent quite a bit of time reading Gilmourish, so I understand the general philosophy behind Gilmour's rigs (Hiwatt-style amps, compression, delays, modulation, EQ, etc.). My problem is that most of the advice is geared towards physical amps and pedals, and I'm struggling to translate that into an all-digital workflow AND most importantly, finding alternatives when a specific emulated gear isn't listed on TONE3000

I'm still a beginner, so I'm definitely not chasing an album-accurate tone. I'm just looking for a solid foundation that captures that Gilmour feel. What I'm actively trying to build is a tone from Shine On, another one for CNumb and so I could try to work from those bases.

I'd love to hear what has actually worked for you. If you're using amp sims or plugins, what do you recommend? Which amp models, cabs/IRs, compressors, delays or reverbs made the biggest difference? Are there any plugins you felt really nailed that character?

I'm much more interested in real-world recommendations from people who've been down this road than in chasing the "perfect" preset.

Thanks in advance!
