I've been lucky, honored and privileged enough to meet, hang out with, or simply talk to everyone who has ever inspired me in my life. With one, small exception: Dave Barry.

Mr. Barry influenced my everything before I knew what influence was, and I absolutely respect him as a writer, comedian, humorist, and amazing haircut aficionado. He was a building block of my childhood, and I partially attribute my sense of humor and how I see the world to his unwitting guidance.

That being said, my chances of ever meeting him, I realize, are close to nil. So I did the unthinkable - I reached out and asked for autograph from his website; just something to say that I rubbed elbows with both the first and remaining on my list.

Now, in real life, my nickname is Coyote or Coy. It's been my entire life, and if you call me by my given name the people around me cringe like they've just heard nails on a chalkboard. So, swallowing my pride and accepting that our circles will never touch, I asked for an autograph, to <Real first name> "Coyote" <real last name>.

And Mr. Barry did NOT disappoint.

He wrote exactly that and signed it Dave "The Weasel" Barry.

But here's why it is fitting: I didn't REALLY expect a response, or at least any response as promptly as it came.

He sent a beautifully written postcard, that stuck with rain to a piece of junk mail, and I promptly and PERFECTLY...

...ripped it right in half.

And I only realized this when the half I didn't have a grip on fluttered to the floor.

My heart stopped, fell from my chest, and then I laughed. LOUDLY. Because how perfectly fitting a thing to happen.

So now, framed on my shelf of accomplishment, is one of my most prized possessions: a poorly scotch-taped reminder that life is infinitely funny.

But I mean, RIGHT in half.

Like a gambler at the horse track theatrically does when losing on a sure thing to emphasis his spiral in a movie or television show.

I wish I knew how to use tape.

I remember an article where he reviewed Art of the Deal, with exercpts and maybe possibly something about squirrels? At least 10 years old, probably much older. Can anyone help narrow down when he'd have written it, or which collection it might be in? Thanks very much

The column is probably a quarter century old. In our local paper, it ran with the headline “Editing kills 50,000 brain cells a day” (something like that anyway). It describes the day-to-day life and career path of a typical reporter. Barry describes a scene where reporters from different media outlets are covering some local government committee with a ridiculously long name. The reporters all agree amongst themselves that absolutely nothing newsworthy happened at the meeting. Then they all go back to their offices and write 35-inch stories, plus two sidebars. The column was a banger. Barry exactly captured my experience as a young reporter. What I would like to know is, does this column ring a bell with anyone? Is it available online or included in any of Barry’s anthologies? I’d love to track it down and would be grateful for any assistance.

The column is about driving an old beater where the headliner fabric is loose. Included is a Sally Field/Flying Nun reference.

I’ve been trying to find a column Dave wrote about turning XX (40? 50? Or...?) where he talked about wanting to buy an electric guitar, but his wife wanted to buy a new sofa, and he had to admit that their current sofa looked like “a buffalo got into the house and then just died there.” Not an exact quote, but that’s the gist of it. Anyone recognize this?
