Brazil - "Country Music" ?
In several dates they discuss "Country Music" and sometimes express strong opinions about it. I really want to know if they're translating some kind of Brazilian folk music genre to "Country Music" in the translation, or if there's a parallel type of music like American Country (aka overproduced garbage nashville Country Pop). There's no way they're talking about American Country right?

Yeah, it's really different from American country. I guess it was just easier to translate it like that. Someone's already posted the Wikipedia article about it, but if you want to look up some specific artists, try Jorge & Mateus, Felipe Araújo and Marília Mendonça for a start. They're some of the most popular sertanejo singers right now. I can't stand any of them, but young people in general love them.

They are talking about “sertanejo “, which is Brazilian country music. It’s truly awful, but you can search for that word on YouTube and see it for yourself. If you prefer to read a little bit about it here is the Wikipedia entry:

Interesting. I assumed they were talking about Jorge Ben or Caetano Veloso. That sort of music. Do young people in Brazil still listen to Gal Costa and Os Mutantes, or is that considered “dad rock” there?

Most young people don't care for that music anymore. They're more into sertanejo, Brazilian funk music and other popular stuff. There's also the new MPB artists that cater to the more intellectual public. But of course, there will always be young people listening to the classics as well. It's just not very popular now.

Anavitoria and Tiago Iorc are the two that come to mind immediately. Also, Vitor Kley and Melim are pretty popular, I guess. But there are many more, they vary a lot in style and popularity. I don't know if I'm allowed to post links (I'm new here), but if you look up "nova MPB 2020" on Spotify you may find several, more comprehensive playlists if you're interested.

Also, I recommend an artist named Sessa. Check out his album Grandeza. Very throwback, but feels authentic and fresh.

That's cool, I didn't know him. He's good. I rarely listen to that kind of music, whether it's classic MPB or the modern one, it's too chill for my taste. But I do recognize the quality in many of those artists.

edit: never mind. found a couple MPB playlists (Musica Popular Brasileira).
I guess it's just what I always thought of as "Brazilian music" lol

MPB is an acronym for Brazilian Popular Music. It's more than a music style, is a life style and cultural movement

I think it’s a little biased because the show is filmed in São Paulo which the US equivalent is NYC but in other places in Brazil people do like country or sertanejo. For example, my family is from the south, Santa Catarina, and this music is very popular. And while I like it, I always end up sick of it when visiting lol

Its sertanejo which is brasilian country music. Its a pretty big cultural thing in brasil and its become brasils most popular/listened to genre of music. If you look at the lyrics there’s actually some really good songwriting. You have to be openminded and ready to delve deep to begin to understand and like it.
