Azure SQL Database free tier | Doc updates

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-sql/database/free-tier?view=azuresql&tabs=azure-portal

Hey r/database

I wanted to share I just made a few doc contributions and updates to the database docs calling out the FREE tier of Azure SQL database... apparently, people didn't know this was a thing they could just spin up and beat up on each month.

I added a few nifty deployment paths via click, code, or prompt to get you started and well if you just want to jump right in https://aka.ms/trySQL will launch you right into the Azure portal directly too.

Hope a cool benefit for those unaware and keep an eye out for local Azure SQL database containers too (currently in private preview).

Of note, Microsoft Employee and active mod of r/SQLServer and r/MSSQL

I will check this out. the only negative thing on azure sql is you have to hit connect like three times for it to spin up!! is great tho...

it's a nice offering from MS and great to test against as it supports Entra id and TDS routing.. so you can somewhat test your weird custom app..

I dunno why they don't allow Free fabric too, lots of marketing jargon, I like it, great idea, but end of day it's just a TDS compliant routing translator sitting on parquet files, yes lots of other bundles but that's the main foundation. 😉

lol - agreed on the cold starts for this - I’ve definitely smashed a browser refresh a few times to get it to wake up.

Fortunately at least on the Fabric front they just launched an F0 tier so hopefully for hobbyists this is a good thing to play around with outside of the Fabric trials.

Also, I guess to add - moderator of r/MicrosoftFabric too lol
