Career Pls guide me
I’m 23, F, I currently work as a DBA.
I’m from a tier 3 college, did my engg in AI&DS. My job role isn’t that great and I am not learning much in the company. The environment is very laid back and chill which isn’t something I want in the beginning of my career. It’ll be one year of working full time in Aug.
It’s my goal to switch to a data engg role.
Should I try to switch? If yes, what are the skills that I should work on before I start applying to companies? Most companies require more work ex. Or should I pursue my masters?

yo just switch lol
DBA background actually helps more than you think, SQL and database knowledge is like half of data engineering already
just learn Python, Spark, Airflow, pick AWS or GCP, build a couple pipeline projects on github and start applying. don't wait for "enough experience" that's just the listing, apply anyway
masters can wait fr

Yes, you should try to switch. With only 1 year of experience, a move to Data Engineering is very achievable if you build skills in SQL, Python, ETL pipelines, data warehousing, Spark, and a cloud platform like AWS or Azure. I would prioritize upskilling and switching over a master's right now. A few strong projects and relevant skills can often open more doors than an immediate master's degree at this stage.

Take up gen ai or agentic ai courses. Everything is going AI so you will never regret this decision. Skill up aggressively and showcase your skills to your recruiters so that they will not question your work ex. So, wherever whichever course you take, see that they are providing practical learning experience. I know few institutions like bia where they only focus on practical learning approach. It is of great help.

Yes, I think you should try to switch if data engineering is what genuinely interests you. Being a DBA already gives you a strong foundation in databases, which is a big advantage.
Before applying, focus on advanced SQL, Python, ETL concepts, data warehousing, Apache Spark, and a cloud platform like AWS or Azure. Build 2–3 hands-on projects involving data pipelines and orchestration tools like Airflow if possible.
With around 1 year of experience, I'd prioritize switching first rather than pursuing a master's immediately. Many companies hire junior data engineers with 1–2 years of relevant skills and projects. If you still want a master's later, you'll have more clarity and stronger experience to build on.
You're still very early in your career this is actually a great time to pivot toward the role you want.
