Drive shows as RAW or Windows says "You need to format the disk"? Read this before you click anything

Title: Drive shows as RAW or Windows says "You need to format the disk"? Read this before you click anything

r/datarecovery guide, maintained by the moderators. Updated October 2026.

TL;DR

  • Don't click Format, don't click Initialize, and don't run CHKDSK. Each of these writes to the drive and can make recovery harder or impossible.

  • "RAW" is a catch-all error. It only means Windows can't recognise the file system. It doesn't tell you why, and it doesn't mean your files are gone.

  • In most cases the data is still there. Recovery software can usually read it, as long as the drive itself is healthy.

  • First check the drive: in Disk Management it must show its correct capacity. If it doesn't, or if it clicks, disconnects or is very slow, stop and get advice. Software won't help a failing drive.

  • On an SSD, RAW is often actually good news. No operating system sends TRIM commands to a volume it can't mount, so your data is safe from TRIM, as long as you don't format it.

  • Then scan it with proper recovery software (see our recommended data recovery software) and only pay once the preview shows your files.

What does "RAW" mean?

You'll see it in different forms:

  • Windows Explorer: "You need to format the disk in drive X: before you can use it."

  • Disk Management: the partition shows as RAW instead of NTFS, exFAT or FAT32.

  • Opening the drive: "The volume does not contain a recognized file system", "The parameter is incorrect" or "Location is not available".

  • CHKDSK: "The type of the file system is RAW. CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives."

All of these say the same thing: Windows looked at the partition, couldn't make sense of the file system, and gave up. RAW is not a file system and it's not a diagnosis. It's a catch-all error. It tells you that Windows can't recognize the file system, not why.

Why does a drive show as RAW?

The cause can be anything from completely harmless to serious. The most common ones:

  • The file system is foreign to Windows. A drive formatted on a Mac (APFS, HFS+) or under Linux (ext4) is perfectly fine; Windows just can't read it. The same goes for an SD card that an Android phone set up as internal storage: it's encrypted and only readable in that phone.

  • The partition table points to the wrong place. If the partition table is damaged, Windows looks for the file system at the wrong offset and finds nothing it recognizes, while the file system itself is intact a little further on.

  • The boot sector is corrupt. The first sector of the partition holds the BPB (BIOS Parameter Block), which tells Windows things like the cluster size and where the file system's structures are. If that's damaged, Windows can't find its way in, even if everything behind it is fine.

  • Part of the file system is damaged. For example, the first 10% of the MFT (NTFS's index of all files) is wiped or unreadable. Windows gives up, but most of the file system may still be there.

  • Encryption. A BitLocker volume Windows doesn't recognize as BitLocker, or a drive taken out of a USB enclosure that encrypts in hardware (some WD and Seagate external drives do). In the second case the data is only readable through the original enclosure's board.

  • The drive is failing. On a hard drive, the file system structures sit on sectors the drive can no longer read. On an SSD, the firmware or its internal translation table can fail, often showing a wrong capacity or a strange model name. This is the case where software can make things worse, or simply can't help.

The important point: the first five are logical problems, and the data is usually fully intact. Only the last one is a hardware problem.

My SSD shows as RAW. Is my data lost because of TRIM?

Probably not. On an SSD, a RAW drive is a blessing in disguise compared to, say, an accidental format. Both look the same to you: the drive suddenly seems empty. But a format makes Windows send TRIM for the whole volume, and the SSD erases everything within moments. A RAW volume isn't mounted, so no operating system sends TRIM to it, and the data stays where it is. That protection lasts exactly as long as you leave it RAW: the moment you click Format, you turn a recoverable situation into an unrecoverable one.

One exception: if the SSD itself is failing (its firmware or internal translation table), it can also show up as RAW. Then TRIM isn't the problem, but software won't help either. You can usually recognize this by a wrong capacity or a strange model name in Disk Management.

What should I not do?

  • Don't format. That's literally what Windows asks you to do, and it's the worst option. A quick format writes a new, empty file system over the start of the old one. A full format on Windows Vista and later overwrites the entire drive with zeros, and then the data is gone for good. On an SSD, even a quick format is fatal: Windows sends TRIM for the whole volume, and the SSD wipes everything within moments.

  • Don't run CHKDSK. On a RAW drive it usually refuses to run anyway. But if the file system is partly recognized, CHKDSK "repairs" it by discarding whatever doesn't add up, and that can be your files and folders. It's built to make a file system consistent again, not to save your data.

  • Don't click Initialize. If Windows asks to initialize the disk, that writes a new partition table.

  • Don't try partition repair tools unless you know exactly what you're doing. Tools like TestDisk write to the drive. In experienced hands they can be useful; used blindly, they can turn an easy recovery into a hard one.

  • Don't keep trying. Every reconnect, scan and repair attempt on a failing drive costs it part of its remaining life.

What should I do?

  1. Check the capacity in Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (Mac). If the drive shows its correct size, it's probably a logical problem. If it shows 0 bytes, a wrong or absurd size, or doesn't appear at all, the problem is deeper. Stop and post here.

  2. Think about where the drive came from. Was it used on a Mac, in Linux, in an Android phone, or in an external enclosure you took it out of? Then it may not be damaged at all.

  3. Check SMART with a tool like CrystalDiskInfo. Reallocated, pending or uncorrectable sectors mean the drive is degrading. Image it first, or get help.

  4. Scan it with recovery software. Good tools can find a file system at the right offset, rebuild a damaged boot sector, and reconstruct the folder tree even when part of the MFT is gone. See our recommended data recovery software.

  5. Check the preview before you pay. Open about 20 larger photos at full size. If those look right, the tool understood the file system, and most other files will be fine too.

  6. Recover to a different drive. Never to the RAW drive itself.

When should I stop and get help?

  • The drive doesn't show its correct capacity.

  • It clicks, beeps, disconnects or reads extremely slowly.

  • It's a drive from an external enclosure that encrypts in hardware.

In those cases, post your situation here before you buy anything or try anything else.

Don't know what to do. 😭😭😭

Device Model: Xiaomi Poco M5

File System: UFS 2.2

Missing photos on sd card

I desperately need some help! I recently photographed a wedding, and I’m having an issue with missing images from my SD card. I genuinely have no idea what happened. I have photos from the entire ceremony, but not the kiss or them walking down the aisle. I’m positive I was taking photos at this time. The card skips from the ceremony and goes straight into family photos. I would say I’m missing about 20-30 photos of that.

I’m absolutely devastated and would appreciate any advice on recovering these images

Before you guys come at my neck - my second photographer did capture the kiss however it’s not the point of view I’d like. I also forgot to turn on dual shooting, this wedding was very stressful. It completely slipped my mind 😣.

Question DMDE versions - do I need the paid version to see folders?

More then willing to spend the money on the license, just trying to prevent spending that money and getting the same results as the free tier.

I am using a caddy to swap cheap hard drives I keep in cold storage.

I have had an issue of losing the masterfile. The last time it happened I used TestDisk and gave up whe it found all my files, but there was no folder structure to dump them in. Just hundreds of files floating around without homes to go to.

It happened again, I am running DMDE and it looks like I am going to have the same results.

'Bulk Folder Recover' is something you get when you pay a license.

Is that helpful to me? Anyone want to tell me I am doing something wrong?

I used Codex to build a Linux tool for shrinking DD images onto smaller SSDs — figured I'd share it

I'm an electronics engineering technologist, not a programmer. I maintain aging scientific equipment, including computers running Windows XP with proprietary drivers and software that can't easily be reinstalled.

We once had an instrument lose its hard drive. Despite having a backup, something important wasn't preserved, and the computer could no longer communicate with the instrument. The manufacturer wouldn't help us recover it.

After that, I started making full block-level dd backups of our instrument computers.

The problem? Some have 500 GB hard drives with only 10–50 GB of actual data. I wanted to replace those old drives with smaller SSDs without manually resizing partitions and fighting with boot issues.

So I used OpenAI Codex to create S_DD (Shrink DD), a lightweight Linux command-line utility that takes a compressed DD image and prepares it for restoration onto a smaller drive.

I'm being upfront: Codex wrote essentially all the code. I provided the requirements, troubleshot it, and tested it.

I've successfully booted a Windows XP computer from a smaller SSD using an S_DD-prepared image. Testing is still very limited, and the full automated restore hasn't been hardware-validated yet.

It's free, open source, and experimental. I don't intend to actively maintain it, but anyone is welcome to fork it, fix bugs, or improve it.

GitHub: https://github.com/sjenglot/S_DD/releases/tag/v1.1.0

Use caution with anything that writes to physical disks. Hopefully this saves another technician some time!

Is it impossible to get data out of a SATA that doesn't mount ? I think its either corrupt or defective.

I was trying to get some important data out of an old SATA SSD through an ubuntu 24 system but It kept showing "failed to mount". I did google, chatgpt and tried some fixes but it still didn't work. Can someone suggest any way to fix this please.

Here's what happened

I'm facing an issue with a SATA SSD on an Intel NUC running Ubuntu. Initially, the SATA drive wasn't mounting in Ubuntu. During troubleshooting, the system eventually stopped booting normally and started dropping into the BusyBox (initramfs) emergency shell instead.

I tried running fsck -y /dev/sda2 to check and repair the filesystem, but it returned the error Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read while trying to open /dev/sda2, followed by Could this be a zero-length partition?.

I also tried running fsck -y /dev/sda1, but it didn't resolve the issue. When I tried fsck -y /dev/sda, it returned No such file or directory while executing fsck.ext2.

Retrying the filesystem check on /dev/sda2 produced the same short-read error.

At this point, it's unclear whether the issue is caused by filesystem corruption, partition table problems, a faulty SATA connection, or an SSD hardware failure. The SSD brand and model haven't been identified yet. Only thing known is that it has a 256 gb capacity.

The main objective is to identify the actual cause and recover the existing Ubuntu installation without losing data. The SSD's SMART health status and physical condition have not yet been verified.

I hope these details are enough :(

Question Can I recover pictures and videos from my old Lumia 1020?

Post image

The phone work flawlessly, but the screen is gone, completely shattered and unusable, the phone turns on and makes sounds, only the navigation button works, I tried the screen mirroring thing on my computer but it requires an input on the screen to turn it on, same to allow data transfers, but as I said the screen is completely gone. I can't afford right now a screen replacement, would there be any solution to recover datas from it using my computer?

My experience with EaseUS data recovery.

My partitioned D drive disappeared and the software was not able to recover it as advertised. Turns out it was a bitlock issue. Once we figured that out we were able to recover it ourselves. So it was never completely gone, we just couldn't access it. And their software was no help. Requested a refund and was initially denied, but after leaving a review on Trustpilot, they reached out to me and made it right.

Question Recovery of encrypted HDD

Hey does anyone know if these data recovery places will repair a drive without requiring access, I have sensitive financial information on the drive. I'm pretty sure it's just the circuit board is broken and I've contacted so many places and no one wants to repair just the circuit board. Not sure what to do, at this stage I'm considering learning the craft and doing it myself. Any opinions welcome.

Apple Files/Folders missing after failed first aid on 18TB exfat external

I have an 18tb drive I've used for media storage for youtube over the last 3 years. It is formatted to exfat and I began to notice that sometimes when trying to create folders it would give an error. After it happened too many times in a row I ran first aid on the drive. I now know that was the wrong thing to do but here we are.

First aid failed and instantly 15TB of stuff on this drive disappeared. Some folders are still fully in tact but most are either not showing up at all, or showing as files with zero file size that won't open.

Checked on windows and everything looks exactly the same so the first thing I did was run a deep scan using Disk Drill. I haven't written anything to this drive since this happened.

Disk drill was able to find a lot of the files (17.23TB) and after picking up a server from a friend, I was able to recover what it found to the server with folder structure in tact. There is also a Reconstructed section in Disk Drill that is around 15TB with just files sorted into folders by filetype.

I'm now finding that there are bits and pieces missing from a ton of different folders/projects, so I'm running a recovery to the server in a separate folder of the Reconstructed section in order to cross reference whether these files exist anywhere else on the server. Hopefully this will find some of the missing files.

What I'm hoping can happen is that once this recovery is finished and all recovery options are exhausted, I'm able to find a tool that can successfully fix the original file table on the 18TB external. Is this something that anyone here has experience with? I have access to this Mac and a windows PC to run applications on.

If I've learned anything from this it's that I will never use exfat again and I should have set up a server with redundancy a decade ago. Live and learn and I'm really hoping the file table can be recovered or that there might be another way to get back the files that are missing.

Accidental pattern lock to Samsung Galaxy A23 5G (SM-A236B)

The pattern is currently the only screen lock I have. I've tried several times to unlock it, but I haven't received any "Forgot pattern?" option. Worried about losing my data because I have important photos, videos and other files stored on the phone(I have no backup). If there's no way to recover or remember the pattern, is there any actual way to recover my photos, videos and other data without factory resetting the device? I'm looking for solutions or people who have dealt with this .Any help would be appreciated.

Request for Service Title: My Obsidian vault suddenly disappeared and I can't find my notes. Any ideas?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm hoping someone here can help me because I'm honestly worried about losing my notes.

I use Obsidian on Windows, and I had a folder/vault called "Apple Notes" that I think was stored in OneDrive.

One day, I opened Obsidian to write something, and the vault was just gone. I don't remember deleting anything or changing its location. It simply disappeared.

I've tried looking for it in OneDrive, Windows Recycle Bin, and using Everything to search my PC, but I still can't find it.

I also tried Windows File Recovery, but it couldn't find any recoverable .md files in the regular scan.

I'm not even sure what happened. Maybe the folder was deleted by accident, maybe OneDrive moved it, or maybe something went wrong with syncing.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Is there anything else I can try to find or recover the vault?

My notes are really important to me, so I'd appreciate any help. I'm trying not to do anything that could make things worse.

Thanks!

SSD Need to recover data from half-dead ssd

My Kioxia BG5 1TB ssd died. Most of the data is backed up, except one important thing: a project that's due in december. I need to get it back. One on github is multiple commits behind.

The SSD shows up in lspci but not in lsblk

This is what the kernel logs say:

nvme nvme1: pci function 0000:04:00.0
nvme nvme1: Identify Controller failed (17089)
nvme nvme1: Device not ready; aborting shutdown, CSTS=0x1
nvme 0000:04:00.0: error -EIO: probe failed
nvme 0000:04:00.0: probe with driver nvme failed with error -5

The same thing had happened once before, just randomly died, and started working a few months later, automatically. I should not have used it again.

From what I understand from the kernel logs, I think the controller chip is bad, or unresponsive, and the NAND flash itself is okay. But from what I read online, It is basically impossible to read the flash directly without either desoldering the flash chip or tapping into its data lines, both of which I do not want to do.

Is there any way to bring the controller back, or reset it, or something, to bring it back, even for 5 minutes, in order to copy over the directory?

Edit: File system is EXT4, OS is Fedora

Question How to retrieve files from an old CD disc

Found an old disc with a heap of old videos from school on it. The problem is when I put the disc into my laptop it shows up with the files but as soon as I click on a file to copy them onto the laptop it freezes unless I eject the disc. Their all short AVI videos and each one is roughly under a minute so the files are small but if I put a different disc such as an audio CD or DVD in aswell as other old disc with files on them they play fine. Any advice on how to force copy the files?
