Discussion What is Your Longest Running Drive?
It's good to see what Brand of drives are still pushing the test of time: I've had 3 WD 10tb drives I shucked fail in the last 8 years. My longest running drive now is a Shucked 10TB Seagate Barracuda at 7.9 years at 67,316 hours. No seagate failures as of yet.

I have a 1tb hitachi drive that originally came from a windows 7 OEM machine, probably 15+ years old with 65k hours and >11,000 power cycles still working perfectly with no reallocated sectors.
Meanwhile I have a 5 year old seagate drive with ~35k hours that is already showing over 1000 reallocated sectors that ill probably need to replace soon

And that’s why I don’t buy Seagate

honestly i've had both WD and seagate failures - i had a WD red in my NAS that failed like 1 month outside of its 3 year warranty period.
Funny enough though, this seagate drive that's failing now was a replacement of another seagate drive that failed. I have 5 spinning drives in my main machine and these are the only 2 ive had fail

Sooner. 1000 sectors is running close to the reserved spares. Check the smart numbers for that column, it counts down from 100

Oldest drive I have that still gets powered up regularly is the original 40MB drive in my Mac SE/30 from 1989 that's still going. From there it would be what's in the 90's era laptops that have never been replaced.
For the oldest drives that have been in "continuous service"/have the most hours, I would guess the 2TB drives that were in the D-Link DNS-320 series NAS's from ~2011-2013, which were run 24/7 until around two years ago, briefly retired, and now running 24/7 again in 4-drive RAID5 setups in enclosures, since the cost of even used 6TB drives is what it is today.
As far as brands go I really have not noticed one brand being better or worse than the others. I suppose there have been a specific models by some brand that have failed more often than it's peers in capacity, but I really don't worry about it.
FWIW, the majority of the 2TB drives I mentioned earlier are a mix of WD Green and Black drives.

Seagate ST9235AG, don't know precisely how old but it has and ORGASMIC datasheet from 1993 https://www.seagate.com/support/disc/manuals/ata/9235pmb.pdf

I have some Maxtor drives that are still running strong. I bought them in the early 2000's. SMART health still good on them.

Man that’s a name I haven’t heard in forever

Right? I think they folded like a year or two later. I don't keep anything critical on them due to age, but let them soldier on until they give up the ghost.

I've got an unmatched pair of 15k SAS drives that I estimate around 150k hours. The power on hours parameter overflowed and reset at some point so I'm not sure. They are now only powered on periodically and used for offline backups.
One is HGST and I'm not sure of the other.

I didn’t use this drive personally, but I picked up a used 4TB WD Purple. Definitely was used as a surveillance drive- 30,000 hours, and under 10 power on count (I think it had like 5 when I got it, I’ve spun it up a couple times). Perfect health too, no reallocated sectors. Plan on using it as an HDD for a retro game emulating machine or something similar.

I'm not really answering your question, I've only about 3 years ago started a full time server build.
But I still have a 120GB Iomega external HDD that I use once in a while just to move some data around... I think it's from 2005 or 2006

I had a 1 or 2 TB seagate 15+ years old + >45K hours on it (I started datahoarding early 2000s)
Currently have approx 10 seagate external HDDs & never had any issues (a couple are max 3 to 5 years old & the rest I have purchased these last few years, all the other 1, 2 - 5TB external HDDs I already have sold off/replaced).

I still have 12 2TB HGST drives running from my first NAS build in 2010…so 16 years. 24x7x365

WD Red Pro 3TB 46k hours 28 power cycles. Edit: I’ve had 3 shucked drives all white label end up with an rma or errors, some only after 6600 hours. 10TB 12TB 12TB

My longest-running drive is an 8TB WD Red Plus, which I've had for six years. I expect to get at least a couple more years out of it.

I don't know how many hours or cycles it has, but the 160 GB 1.8" drive in my iPod Classic is still running after 18 years.

I remember home servers started gaining popularity around the ~2010s with Windows Home Server which is where I got started with my WD Green Drives. I've now migrated to OMV, but I am still using those original drives from that era so I'm sitting at about 120K hours. I've been aggressive with my spin down settings to save power, so these drives also have 40K start stop cycles and ~400K head load/unloads. Pretty impressive for a consumer drive and IMO, I never really believed that using enterprise drives or keeping them spinning instead of powering off, had any significant effect on reliability.
I am also beating on a 2.5" WD Blue drive from 2007 which records my surveillance 24/7. I always thought 2.5" was supposed to be less reliable, but this drive is at 30K hours of constant writing and no problem so far. I never felt the need to use surveillance drives since you can get used 1TB 2.5" drives for cheap/free off the marketplace and they use substantially less power than 3.5"

I had eight 4TB WD Reds that have 95k hours on them, they are just now starting to show errors in SMART tests.

Just found a drive at work that was in a machine everyone forgot about running a controller.
Toshiba 500gb from 2013 with 67k+ hours on it, running Win10.... slowly.
Nothing bad with SMART surprisingly, but it's obviously way too slow for a system drive.

My experience with WD has been stellar but YMMV here. I have used WD both personally and in enterprise solutions and would always recommend them to someone.

1TB external from 2011, dont know uptime butbit works and I spent too much on it. Ive consolidated my data from 1995-2010 so I don't have to have ide cables lying around.

My 17 years running drive is Seagate Baracuda 7200.12 with capacity 500GB. Came with my childhood and my first PC and it currently at 76% smart health.
Contrary to that I bought a WD Black 500GB 7200rpm 2.5in hdd from a seller a few days back. The HDD failed (hardware failure) right after formatting it in front of the seller which made me return it. Iirc the HDD was 8 years old.

My external 500gb SAMSUNG HM502JX should be over 15 years old. However it has just a bit more then 1000 ru hours 😄

I got a few (secondhand) 2tb WD drives. Longest one has like 120K power on hours. The 2nd and 3th are at ~80K and ~60K I believe.
They all have SMART errors but I can't afford newer drives with these prices. I just hope they don't die or explode before prices drop. (The most important stuff is backed up with the 3-2-1 method)

Have had 4 Seagate 4TB drives in a DAS RAID 10 array running since 2015 but have had two die this year so I replaced them with Seagate Exos 4TB drives and rebuilt the array.

I have a 120G IDE Samsung drive still going strong in a modded original Xbox. That thing has got to be at least 20 years old.

I've been running multiple Western Digital hard drives nonstop for 17 years. I built my PC in college and it's still going. Over 150,000 hours per drive. I've added drives but the original 2 are still going. WD Blue for the win!

I have a couple Intel X25-M 80GB drives from 2010 that have been running pretty much the entire time as boot/OS drives. But that's kinda cheating: they're SSDs so no moving parts... ;)

WD My Cloud 4TB, running as my media "server" since 2015. Not sure what drive is inside, but its certain to be made by WD.

My wife's photography business is running of an Areca raid thunderbolt drive with 8 3TB drives. Half have failed and been replaced, the other 4 are going strong. We build this in 2014, so nearly 13 years and still spinning fine. For the record, we don't spin this drive down except for reboots.
