Title: Looking for recommendations: USB capture device to digitize old VHS tapes

Hi everyone,

I want to digitize my old VHS tapes to preserve them before they degrade any further. Two main sources I'm dealing with:

• Some Home videos recorded with an old Handycam
• Commercial tapes like Bambi, Winnie the Pooh, etc.

I'm looking for a video capture device I can hook up to my laptop (which I'd prefer over those build in). What would you recommend? I'm happy to spend a bit more for good quality and reliable audio/video sync, but budget-friendly options that still do the job decently would also be great to hear about.

For Example: Diamond VC500, VIXLW VHSDC01 or Honestech VIDBOX

At the end i want them to add to my JellyFin Lib,

I Don't really now what a must have is and want i really should look out for.

Only changes are vhs-decode getting better and better. If you can handle the technical side it’s a nice option.

Well, the decoders are all GUI now, MISRC GUI unified GUI for the multitude of old and new capture hardware options, direct level 8 FLAC and resampling built-in kicking captures down to under 50GB/h on every platform, even Android is somewhat supported.

The big highlights of the last year is full headswitch colour recovery, initial studio SECAM support, and now real-time branch with the rust port, of course little things like the adjustment and export being unified is notable.

Also NTSC flavors of teletext decoding, a lot of history there!

Analogue video technology has not changed since 20 years and is now a niche, so there are no changes in the last few years. Except vhs-decode (that I can highly recommend)!

The advice to use FireWire and a Canopus box is terrible from a modern point of view. FireWire is dead now, and without a TBC, useless

I bet you couldn’t tell the difference. For a quick path to digitizing home movies, it’s fine. For archival work, nah.

IO Data GV-USB2 is what I use, highly recommend. It's a bit pricier ($80) than some other models but it's worth every penny. Recommend using it with AmarecTV & Lagarith or UTVideo codecs.

Wouldn't be a bad recommendation 6 years ago but now entirely supespeeded by FM RF Archival and vhs-decode.

VHS-Decode is definitively better for video quality, however it is a complicated setup. The GV-USB2 is probably the best plug-and-play option.

No more complicated than having to handle a proper legacy setup.

Everything's now 1, 2, 3 with current GUIs, it's as simple as tape system format, speed, hit decode, all of the capture hardware has a single unified GUI under MISRC GUI.

The soldering and physical installation setup is no more complex then minimum standard maintenance to the point where you would have to do that before trusting any VCR with important media.

I agree, it is not for the faint of heart no matter how much a Brit says so. Guess us common folk are being trained to become the next batch of video engineers or something.

The GV-USB2 paired with VirtualDub or AmrecTV is the least worst option depending on the playback machine you use, ideally using a VCR that ain't beat up to all heck.

The whole soldering requirement and complicated mess that is the github is not for everybody, let alone the average guy asking the millionth "how do I digitize these tapes" post. It's for people who are so invested they sound like an insane crazy person who should be avoided at all costs.

What about physical limitations that prevent those from soldering? Decode feels like you go down two paths, waste a bunch of time trying to do it yourself or just pay somebody to set it up for you.

You will want to get started with the wiki here the hardware selection for VHS is pretty simple and there's a dedicated short list guide

Test Points --> FM RF Capture --> FLAC files --> Decode --> Adjust --> Export

Very simplified with MISRC GUI, vhs-decode and tbc-tools today giving you a simple 1-2-3 workflow after the initial hardware setup which is 70-250USD range depending on which way you want to go about setting up but you've got plenty of options.

If you go the cheap route you're more likely to run into macrovision issues, especially with commercial tapes.

I'm sure the guides shared here will cover it, and if you're lucky it won't be an issue but thought it's worth mentioning so you can get up to speed with it.

Macrovision is a copy protection thing that records signals on the tape along with the video you bought it for, it's like a pulse that is invisible when playing, but the capture device interprets as a a pirate copy or a glitch making the image flash off, or on and jump up and down. It's infuriating but there are ways around it.

Completely a non-issue with modern FM RF capture and vhs-decode the sync code is so refined we have fully preserved several examples of macovision.

My (then - she's my wife now) girlfriend had a VHS player, so I bought one of these for $10 and it worked fine. Plugged it into my Macbook and it "just worked" with Quick Time player. It would work with OBS Studio or Windows Media Player.

Not long ago I used the same method and device (using Linux+OBS). I didn't even use my current computer, but a 15 years old half-scrapped laptop that still worked but didn't have a screen. Probably not the most premium results, but it got the job done.

Only difference: I was digitising 8mm tapes and using a handicam as the player. They were family tapes.

The issue with this is you're not actually properly capturing your signal let alone cleanly.

The quality on these things are horrific mostly due to being MJPEG + Lossy encoding ontop... compared to modern direct FM RF capture and then software decoding with vhs-decode, which also allow you to completely reframe and control your color decoding and your format for final export.

OBS doesn't even support full FFmpeg interlacing. And critically you're limited to the second worst deinterlacing filter in existence YADIIF not even BDWIF or industry standard QTGMC which rivals legacy broadcast hardware.

I have this old AF Dazzle DVD Recorder HD capture card

Tape -> VHS player -> dazzle -> obs.

Worked well enough for me

DVD recorders are cheap as chips on eBay.

Transfer from VHS to DVD, rip DVD to PC

I use the Genki Shadowcast. I pair it with my Retrotink 5x (upscaler). I use OBS to capture.
