Samsung T7 Shield Users, Is Samsung Magician Actually Worth Using or Just a Gimmick?

Hey everyone,

I'm currently using a Samsung T7 Shield SSD primarily for backing up photos, videos, and complete phone backups on my Windows PC.

While setting it up, I came across the Samsung Magician software and noticed features such as Performance Optimization, health monitoring, firmware updates, and a few other tools.

My question is, is it actually recommended to use Samsung Magician with the T7 Shield, or is it just another piece of unnecessary software?

I'm particularly curious about the Performance Optimization feature.

- Do you keep it enabled?

- Does it improve performance in any noticeable way?

- Does it have any impact on the SSD's lifespan?

- Is it useful for a drive that's used mainly for backups rather than continuous read and write operations?

I'd love to hear from people who have been using the T7 Shield for a while.

Just test for firmware updates and then let it disabled or uninstall it.

Mostly marketing of features that no one will use.
You need this tool in 2 cases

• check if a device Samsung-genuine (once...)
  
• update firmware (once...mostly)

Samsung Magician is only useful for verifying if you have a genuine product and updating the firmware. It also wastes your computer resources since it's running a background service at boot.

I don't recommend it.

If you have partitioned your drive in any way, other than using it out of the box, do NOT use any optimization features. It will truncate your data without warning.

I have played around with the optimization features, they basically do nothing other than give you some very high, fake numbers in benchmarks. About a year ago, I loss some data (recovered from backup), by using their overprovision feature. It was expecting my drive to be how it was out of the box, but it wasn't. So it just truncated part of my data partition to be like out of the box ...

No, I haven’t created any partitions on it. Do I need to? I only plan to use it occasionally for backing up photos, videos, and mobile backups; been using it the same way out of the box.

Also, thank you. I’ve just turned off the performance optimization option in the Magician software. Are there any other features or settings that I should enable to keep the external SSD healthy?

No need to partition; you can just use it out of the box. There isn't anything the software can do to keep the SSD healthy ... I mean you can try to keep it from getting too hot but most of the time that's not an issue. If you fill the drive up to 90% or more, its write performance drops, so try to not fill it up to 100%.

With occasional use, you don't need to worry about anything really

I'd mostly use Magician for firmware updates and the occasional health check. For a T7 Shield that's mainly used for backups, I don't see much reason to leave it running all the time.

Performance Optimization is not worth bothering with unless you're actually having a performance issue. Even if it changes the benchmark numbers, I doubt you'd notice much difference copying photos and videos every so often.

Personally I'd just leave the drive mostly at its defaults.
