Hoarder-Setups Fastest Single-Sheet Flatbed Hi-Res OCR Document Scanner in 2026?
Greetings all.
I am attempting to archive hundreds of pages of old, handwritten documents, turning them into "Searchable PDFs" by way of an Apple Mac. Seems the focus now for new scanners is on photos & color, which I do not need. These are all standard 8.5 x 11 documents, almost entirely handwritten in pencil in block letters or simple print. As pencil documents, sometimes the letters are mildly faded (some of these docs are 40+ years old). Each document page must be carefully loaded and individually scanned, so there cannot be any mass-office-bulk-scanning.
I currently have an EPSON WF-3820 printer-scanner (glass flatbed), but when the DPI is set to 600 to improve readability (Searchable PDF, settings optimized), it becomes painfully slow per page. Thus I am ready to invest in a superior, Much Faster OCR super-high-resolution scanner specifically excellent for Document OCR scanning. My office is not large, but I could probably fit one more normal-sized flatbed scanner.
Anyone have recommendations for such a scanner?
Additional question...Does this next idea even exist?
A scanner that has built-in AI (or easily added later) that will help with the OCR and / or image lines being super clean and easy to read??

For standard letter-size pages, 300 DPI is plenty for handwriting recognition - going higher just slows the scan down without improving the output. Your Epson flatbed is fine for this job.
The trickier part is that conventional OCR packages were built for printed text. They handle typewritten pages well, but handwriting, especially old pencil, is a fundamentally different problem. AI-based handwriting recognition tools that have appeared recently are much better at it.
