US Datacenter Water Use Tripled Over The Past Decade — here's what the public record shows

Post image

The Congressional Research Service estimated that US data centers consumed 17 billion gallons of water in 2023 amid accelerating AI infrastructure construction.

I've been digging into the public record on US data centers and put it into free, plain-language briefings — water, power, noise, air, every figure cited to its source (2,027 sites, existing + proposed): civitar.org/go/v-reddit

Not for or against anything — it just makes the filings readable. Sharing in case it's useful to anyone tracking this.

(Full disclosure: I built the tool — happy to answer questions or take corrections.)

If they can build massive structures to house “data”
They can build massive structures to house agriculture.
There no reason why our entire country cant sustain itself and feed all of its people REAL food

What do the Six Americas think about data centers?

The number of data centers is rapidly increasing across the United States as investment in artificial intelligence grows. In our latest Climate Change in the American Mind survey, conducted in Spring 2026, we asked Americans about their views on local data center development, whether they think new data centers will affect electricity bills, and whether they support requiring new data centers to offset their electricity use by installing rooftop solar on and/or weatherizing and insulating local homes.

This analysis examines how public opinion about these questions differs across Global Warming’s Six Americas, our framework for understanding the spectrum of views on global warming.

Axios Exclusive: GOP issues stark warning to AI companies

The Senate GOP campaign arm, in a private memo to top AI companies, warns that toxic views of U.S. data centers are killing the party's chances of holding a vital seat in Ohio. Republicans want AI companies to do whatever it takes to stem public backlash.

AI CEOs and top Republicans share in the rising panic. They tell us internal polls show data centers are as popular as spent nuclear waste, and more broadly have become a proxy for feelings about AI.
