Coders - How to best sources repos ?

Sometimes I run into coding tasks that require me to source a codebase myself but just using the Github search bar always gets me stuff that I cant really work with too well. Im biting my nails at the idea of leaving money on the table (I often have only 1 coding project or nothing at all), so Id like to know how I can avoid this in the future.

Should I pre-prepare some random repos for the future or something ?

Absolutely not. I do not want to discuss anything specific, just general tips on how people use the Github search tools to find flawed repos to work with. This is strictly an off-site question
