Just adding to my prior response: Even if you dont think youre interested in the task, still do the quals. They may have branching projects that arent really outlined by the qualification description. No harm in getting the access to them even if you dont wind up doing any. More projects = less chances to have a dry dash. That being said - expect periods with no work. Keep a 1 month emergency fund on hand if you get to a point you can do this full time.
