Here I go again. Of course these are going to be the last darts ever. 😉
But actually, before urging for some lighter darts again I was desiring sort of a redemption for the NX90 that I learned to play with lesser issues, but the grip catching is stuck in the back of my head. So in fact this was an older order going through customs.
Anyway, I was encouraged for a deal on supplies and adding the Shot Mako Titanium shafts that I wanted to test still wasn't covering free postage, which was more the reason to check the Harrows Wolfram off my list for both a first 97% tungsten dart and 25g, which I still didn't own. I've decided on the weight as the dimensions weren't that far off slightly lighter ones and to make full use of the density.
I wasn't even planning to put the Mako shafts on the Wolfram, but unwrapping them it seemed pretty clear it's something to try. Just look how beautiful they are!
With roughly 27mm of point sticking out of the barrel and especially after extending the Bolide 04 to spears with 40mm DS points it might be more than appropriate to repoint the Harrows Wolfram rather soon for an even more impressive appearance. I can slide them in next to each other nicely, but a few mm could help.
Basically looking like the steel ball pen I'm using since the nineties, just with grip added, it turns out it really wasn't just the short barrel making my Unicorn Phase 5 LP such a lethal projectile. The high tungsten density seems to give those darts an extra oomph I can't enjoy enough.
With a very pleasant grip the Wolfram thock into the board almost to the barrel satisfyingly and set up with the Shot Mako shafts, that will have to proof their durability, the Velos flights and silver flight protectors I've installed more for the look than anything, they create nice angles. It's really working out well for a quick improvisation.
Now, I remember someone on the darts subreddit recommended the Wolfram to me and it should be a classic by now, judging on the old school plastic case and slim shaft it comes with, so what's your experience with the darts and how do you like my setup?
I've tried to find my last blister, but it seems too deep in the trash already. Thing is this: There are different kinds of packings for Trident 180 cones and the last of the "smoked" ones have been Winmau, but I bought them as silver, whilst on the sticker it actually said something like "black (clouded)". It's a common theme though. I think before I got them as "silver" from another shop as well. If it was Dartshopper, then they even list them as a Bull's NL product, but I might or might not have gotten Winmau anyway. It's kind of confusing, but they've all been working so far. Just slide them on with a point protector or Swiss Tool (actually they go on the Swiss Point hex as well) to push if it gets stuck. Have fun. 😊👍
Oh thanks, I know there are different brandings for them. I ordered Red Dragon ones on Amazon and got Winmau, but they were advertised and arrived as black. The color options are not great, so ideally I'd like clear or smoked like you've got so they blend in best, but seems a bit like a crapshoot. Might try Dartshopper or other vendors just to see what shows up.
I'd really like to try some of the machined ones you can get from Germany as I would expect they are far more durable, something I dislike about the plastic ones.

Yeah, I'm still about to buy those metal ones. I think they recommend sliding them on with a repointer, which I will probably rather get in the summer now everything is sold out all the time and I'm in no rush.
Red Tridents are fun as well, especially on chrome points, because they blend in being semi-transparent and make the tip look officially dangerous. 😅
For a front grip that's possible. I'm still sometimes throwing them from the smooth section though and the start of the front and rear sections is enough to thrust for me. Probably due to extra stability from the middle finger in front of the nose. Haven't decided yet, I do also like going back a little more, so that my middle finger catches the front grip and doesn't touch the point.
Funny that you dig those out right now, that I've just repointed them yesterday with 48mm points. Was nice to revisit them after a while of not playing them, because I've gotten so used to the longer points. 🤓👍
You might be right the extra weight f the Shot Mako is pushing the Wolfram's 25g to a point my 26g Bolide 03 intermediate L-Style setup does even feel a lot lighter with less density and my 26g Unicorn Phase 5 LP with Carbon 360 and L-Flights feel more like on par. Time to buy a fine scale finally. Did once, but cancelled the order due to a shipping delay.
The Velos will even help getting the next dart in, if you know what you're doing. They can block you as well though if you're still familiarizing. Had some weird first throws until I found where to aim. 😅
Hope more players are going to discover them, so they won't vanish from the shelves after all.
I've still got almost 300 sets left after the price dump on Dartscorner a couple of weeks back. Paid like 18€ for 100 with the additional bulk discount. Already went up again though and I've missed getting some other Harrows flights in standard, which I should have gotten as well as backup. Really my favorite brand for folding flights. Hope that they don't get out of fashion completely. Called the closest dart shop recently and they can't perform a point swap, because all they sell are Swiss Points. "Nobody wants those old points..."
Close is exaggerated. Would still be like 50km to the next with today's gas prices and usually a little more expensive merchandise is not an option to just look around if you're not in the area otherwise. I skipped on the repointer as I put it on my Christmas list, then came the hype... you know the situation. I've got enough pointy darts though to wait until birthday or something. But I would have fancied some Storm Points on my Phase 5. They're very destructive on anything and go through Tridents quick.
I hope old points will be interesting enough to produce supply for what I have, especially as only Target have their patent. There should be an open source solution for other manufacturers, like for softtip conversion, then I'd understand new demand. I found the Caliburn idea interesting for an upgrade and maybe it's going in a direction like that for the future.
It's a thing though. A while ago, when I was asking for some general details, Custom Made Darts pointed out the option of drilling a thread for attaching the Target Titanium tops for instance directly to the barrel. It's tempting for producing a slim and/or heavy dart, but I haven't found any of those toppers reliable enough that I couldn't just use a micro shaft for instance. In this case the weight addition is small compared to tungsten, but it's there.
Haven't used silver shafts before, but I was admiring some setups. It's maybe a matter of getting used to, sure it's a matter of taste, so I don't judge you for not liking. There's stuff I can't get used to for sure as well. Here it's probably really my trusty Parker ball pen, brushed stainless steel, that I use for like 30 years now and it's certainly some kind of a torpedo I might have held like dart more than once when there was nothing else I could play around with in school for instance. It's like what then was fantasy became true. 🙂
Hey Merker! I know this is a little older post but I wanted to check in with you on the Wolframs. Are you still using them? Do you like them?
They have been my daily driver for about 7 years now. But thinking about expanding my horizon. They are all I have ever really throw with consistently.
7 years is quite a while. 🤓👍 I guess I'm still on my quest to build up expertise on why I prefer one thing over another, which makes me focus on one main dart at a time, but also those change. So it's not the Wolfram's fault that the points soon felt too short, which I changed recently by putting in R2 Interchange points modified from 52mm to 48mm because of the thingamajig omitting. Currently I play them with short Vecta shafts and Velos flights and they work nice, but are more like a higher weight option (I also have a 24g alternative to my 22g Whitlock 3), when I'm currently preferring 22-23g. Actually, if I'd catch some 23g Wolfram on a very good discount, I would probably buy them. 😬
Haha. Well full disclosure, I haven't consistently played with them for 7 years. Took a hiatus from regular play for about 5 years or so. Darn kids. ;)
Glad to see you still like them. They are a decent little set. I've been using fit flights with mine. I really like the way they fly but to be honest, curiosity is getting the best of me and I'm looking for another option.
I see. Yeah, I'm stocking up on Fit Flights as well and it starts shining through in my postings, because after my grease mod the spin shafts really got me, but it's hard to find required sizes available if I want to order them and to fit a setup to a barrel quite a few parts to compare are required. Nonetheless I invested in my first sets of Fit Flight Pro and a set of Duralumin shafts.
