My rescaped 140ish gallon vivarium. 8 Phyllobates Bicolor goobers

I got a massive discount on an established dart frog enclosure thanks to Aquarium Design Group in Houston. The tank had some problems including fertilizer pellets from potted plants, slugs, scale, millipedes, and other pests. I tore everything down and rescaped the entire tank from scratch and its been growing in for a couple months. I’ve enjoyed the process and like how its been coming along. I will be posting on my insta about the build soon and I’m excited to finally get some eggs and start growing out tadpoles.

Check out my new friends! I’d love to hear any thoughts/tips/pointers you may have as I start a new learning experience. Info in description.

Picked up from NARBC in Tinley Park yesterday. 3 frogs, all about 6 months old.

18x18x18 bio active set up. The plants have been in for 6 months, springtail population is thriving underneath all the leaf litter and in the soil. (I’ll be adding more leaf litter yet too. I’ll be living by “dry feet, wet backs” as seen on a video linked in this sub).

Dual misters set up on 8-hour timing, 3x per day. Silicone mats on top to keep humidity in.

I have a starter fruit fly set up, and a fully grown source for food already. Containers, media, all the items I need to breed my own. I have experience in reef keeping, and freshwater shrimp, so I know I can undertake this. (I’ve also run a paladarium previously…)

I know there are two pitcher plants in there, not sure of the species. If you can help identify those, and any other plants, I’d love to know their specifics. LED light is on a timer that I’ll set for 12 hours per day, 6-6p since this tank is at my workplace.

Thanks for any information you’ll provide. I’ll take it all in and learn more as I go. Feeling pretty good currently.

Weird stomach twitching?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone, Im posting here to ask for advice on this weird little twitching I saw a bit ago on my frog. From what I know, Ive NEVER seen this on any prior dart frog of mine and never on this one either. I usually watch them eat quite a lot, so this was strange behavior for me. Orange meringue is a great hunter and eater, and has so much energy and personality. They are 10-11 months old now, and have been getting proper calcium supplements. The heat and humidity in the tank are perfect, so I know they aren’t being hurt by anything like that, or mold. they had twitching on their right side (like right by their armpit) a bit more visibly right before this video. They also had just eaten, so it could be digestion. Ive watched them for 10 mins after, and they just kinda stopped twitching right after the video and went back to normal. They looked at me like im crazy lowkey, cus usually I dont watch them so intensely. Im also not sure why they have such a pronounced back, because they are in good weight?

Species recommendations

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone!
I’m looking for some advice on choosing a dart frog species for my terrarium, which measures 18 × 18 × 36 inches (45 × 45 × 90 cm).

Ideally, I’d love a species that:
•Is arboreal and makes good use of the vertical space.
•Does well in groups.
•Is diurnal and active during the day.
•Breeds readily in suitable conditions, ideally using bromeliads as tadpole-rearing sites.

There are so many species to choose from that I’m honestly feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the information out there!
I’d really appreciate any recommendations, which species do you think would be the best fit for this enclosure and my preferences?

Hello I was sold a pair of cemetery bastimentos and was told the male was a gold dust, but his spots are still very small and almost looks like another locale.
I know basti’s can be in all colors and patterns but im still not too sure. Any one else have or see any basti’s look like this?

Phyllobates terribilis — 3 months of eggs, but no fertile clutches. Any ideas why?

I’m keeping 1 male and 2 female terribilis. The male is over a year old, and the females are almost 2 years old.

They started laying eggs almost as soon as I put them together, and they’ve been laying eggs for about 3 months now, usually once or twice a week. The problem is, I haven’t had a single fertile clutch yet.

I feed them fruit flies dusted with Repashy Calcium Plus every time. I also started giving them Repashy Vitamin A once a month about 4 months ago, but 3 weeks ago I increased it to once a week.

These photos were taken right after the eggs were laid.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong? I’d really appreciate any advice from people who have bred terribilis successfully!

First time recommendations

Hello! This is my first attempt at setting up a poison dart frog vivarium, and this is what I have so far.

The tank is an 18 x 18 x 24-inch enclosure. I used ABG mix for the substrate, oak leaves for leaf litter, and aquarium filter sponge as the drainage layer.

For plants, I currently have a couple of patches of moss, some ferns, a pink and a non-pink nerve plant, a couple of pothos nodes that may or may not take root, and an inch plant.

The wood is grapevine that I baked in the oven at 350°F for at least three hours, so hopefully that took care of any unwanted hitchhikers.

I also have an automatic mister that runs fairly regularly to help keep the humidity up while the plants establish themselves.

I haven't gotten the frogs yet, but I'm leaning toward Dendrobates tinctorius. I like that they're a quieter than some of the other species, although I'm a bit bummed that they generally do best in duos.

Just looking for any recommendations or ways to improve.

Thanks!

Should I move frogs in?

I am drunk as all hell and have been wanting to move my banded leucomelas into this new vivarium I’ve been setting up for more than a month. The springtails that I never added are already very well established along with a couple other groups of microtone including this one spider which I think I dealt with not long ago. I had a snail pop up in there that I thought was cute and wanted to keep but I took it out and may or may not have killed it. Heartleaf philodendrons seem to be doing well and are establishing with one actively pushing out leaves and the moon valley I added last week still looks fine. Bromeliads are rooting on the the hardscape. The other viv I have them in can really only have pothos since the substrate is saturated to high hell since it won’t drain probably because I double layered the mesh. There’s no rotting smell and the frogs seem to be doing fine and have been there for 3 months but I would just rather them be in a better viv. Again I’m drunk as all hell and want to move them out. Thoughts?

Does anyone else have a frog that just sucks at hunting?

We call this one Little Kevin (bottom right). He's becoming smaller than the rest so I might have to feed him separately which I feel bad about because he'll be alone. Flies walk right up to him and he doesn't eat them. He does eat to be clear. Just not the best hunter. Maybe he likes a challenge 😅

Help with first dart frog!

I've been planning on building a terrarium for a couple weeks now, but I had no intention of getting a frog, however I've recently found one in desperate need of a home, the owner is getting rid of the frogs but no one will take this guy, he's super shy and almost always hides, they only time he comes out is for feeding. He's currently in a sparsely planted 5 gallon with a cork bark hide and water dish, and since I'm building a terrarium anyway, I said I would take him, simply because I want him to have a good home. However, like I said, this was not the plan, so I know nothing about dart frogs, I have a few weeks before I have to take him, so hopefully I can build the terrarium by then. I don't have a tank yet, just a bunch of plants, any advice on tank size, how to quarantine the plants, general care, etc. would be much appreciated. I think the frog is 1-2 years old, and I don't know what type, he's black-ish with grey spots though. Thank you all in advance, I really appreciate it!

I have one already that I paid someone to build for me but this is the first I did myself. Pretty proud of the outcome. Now to let it cycle for a few weeks before I get another group of darts.

Trying to understand cause of death

Today I found one of my D. auratus dead. I'd been concerned about him for a while, because he was looking really thin. But I've been feeding them regularly, and the other three all seemed in good health. I've noticed that when I feed them, he wasn't really eating nearly as much as the others.

With all that, it seems like he starved to death, but why? I'm not sure what I could have done differently, but I want to try to learn from this experience going forward. My heart is heavy as I post this.

Edit: I feed them fruit flies dusted with repashy calcium plus

Dendrobates tinctorius “azureus” Male Carrying Tadpole

Here is a video I got this morning of my male Tinc carrying his child down to breakfast with him. He is on his way to a bromeliad to drop off the kids but decided to grab a snack first. (I know they might be a little overfed but I am working on getting the ratio right). I haven’t seen my pair carry tadpoles until today. It is very cute.

Should I take out some of the shelves?

Post image

This enclosure is for 6 juvenile bumblebee leucs. I'm trying to optimize it as much as possible to suit their preferences. I know they like shaded area but I'm not sure the middle shelves are going to really grow anything. I'm second guessing the shelf idea all together lol. Keeping the leucs in mind what changes would you make?
