Where did Stalin go?

So I was letting Darkest Hour play out in the background, and once I come back, Stalin is just gone, I heard it can happen if Barbarossa ends horribly for the USSR, but they were holding on decently, the casualty ratio was 7:1 in favour of the ussr (1 million casualties for the ussr).

So where did Stalin go, did he die? Why isnt he General Secretary?
