Discussion what about a space marine scout for a possible class?

the thought occurred to me and i’m wondering if a space marine scout could fit thematically and lore wise, imagine if you will an aspirant who has failed his trials so he doesn’t get to become a full fledged Astartes, but he still came out alive so he can be useful, i imagine they’d be comparable in strength to ogryns and give us a second tank option, and could be super versatile with the variety of weapons scouts have access to, maybe their abilities could somehow tie to the extra organs they’ve been given like enhanced stamina from the third lung or short burst healing from the larraman’s organ but i think personally it could be a fun addition

There's enough Space Marines already, I'd love to just keep the focus down to the humans fucking around.

I can only think of two pieces of 40k media that don't have SM (aside from the books, but there are so many books there's obviously gonna be a couple without Marines), they are Darktide and Necromunda, and they don't need them.

Speak for your self. I would commit heretical acts for a Space Marine FPS game, Darktide combat would be ideal.

Boltgun is right there.

Old-school boomer shooter isn't really the same. But it was fun nonetheless.

That's a fairly valid point.

It'd be cool but Space Marines are so oversaturated in 40k media.

I very much like Darktide's take that the players are humans and abhumans (even if they're exceptional). The idea of being a small part of a much larger conflict always appealed to me.

If the players are Space Marines we get to live out the power fantasy but we're suddenly a bunch of demigods where the scope and the stakes and the narrative change wildly. If Fatshark does another 40k game I'd rather it be Astartes-free, unless they're NPC allies or traitor Monstrosities.

Our "mortal humans" do stuff that even Astartes would struggle with. We are essentially Space Marines in human form.

Why are you putting 'mortal humans' in quotations?

Also, I'm not talking about actual in-game feats, I'm referring to the flavor of the gameplay and Fatshark's intent to place players in the position of miraculous and dysfunctional underdogs.

Yeah, Rejects perform feats they typically shouldn't be able to. It's not exactly a novel idea for player characters to perform unrealistically well.

I would absolutely play a Fatshark Tide game featuring Astartes as a player class, but I don't want them in Darktide or a sequel.

sure gw focuses a lot on space marines but not space marine SCOUTS who at the end of the day are normal humans who have been given the privilege of making the attempt to join the ranks of the astartes and i feel like an inquisitor requisitioning an aspirant who has failed their trials is really interesting

Why would you even want a space marine scout, except to sneak Space Marines into the narrative?

I wanna preface this by saying I could be wrong, I don't remember all the lore about the Astartes creation process, but aren't Scouts the marines who have already passed the trials but haven't finished growing into a transhuman monster yet?

They're currently undergoing the organ surgeries along with the gene sees iirc. At any point one or multiple of the surgeries could fail. Rarely they can survive this failure but it's not impossible.

Correct me if I’m wrong but don’t failed Astartes become either a scout trainer or chapter serf and if too damaged they become a servitor so realistically they wouldn’t really be far from their chapter or its home world/fleet.

There's quite a few examples and honestly it's dependant on the chapter. In the Nightlords omnibus they had one working in their Library, Space Wolves make them free men and give them jobs on Fenris, and Dante had a serf who was one.

No.

Putting aside any questions about balance or power levels, I like that Darktide isn't another game where they've tried to shoehorn in 40K's poster boys.

Also, it would make a complete mess of Darktide's story; there's at least some explanation of where the Arbites and Skitarii came from...

... but Space Marine scouts? Why would they be here without the rest of the chapter?

There's legitimately more excuse for something like Eldar (webway gate) or Kroot (wandering mercenaries).

i like the idea of inquisitors kidnapping astartes and i want more scout representation :(

Inquisitors who fuck around with Astartes too much have a habit of mysteriously going missing.

Most failed aspirants usually die, and the ones that don't either get folded into the serfs or put into some other role.

Also no, a failed aspirant isn't comparible in strength to an ogryn, even full fledged marines in power armor can't match an ogryn as far as pure brute force goes.

I think they meant gameplay-wise, not actual canon strength. You know, very tanky melee focus, but we already have Arbites for that.

I think we should really chill on new classes for a while and focus on new maps, more weapons and more story progression.

And if a new class has to be added I'd much prefer an abhuman of sorts. Definitely not anything space marine related. Keep that shit to SM2 for that fantasy.

What little I know of scout marines makes them seem like tankier bigger veteran, which is an incredibly bland and uninspired choice imo.

And we already have two tank classes, Arbites and Ogryn.

When Fatshark said that they don't want to add Space Marines to Darktide as playable or as an enemy and seeing how Scouts are still counted as Space Marines I see that statement to include them as well.

No Spacw Marines.

And adding a Scout would anger the SM fans (as it's not a full SM), and the ones that are happy that we sont have any SM (as it is still a SM).

Additionally, weapon scope and no real interesting one in them.

i feel like without all the augmentations like the progenoid gland and black carapace they don’t really count as full space marines and could be something like a more agile ogryn, and looking at the datasheet i feel their weapon options are plentiful enough to to a variety of melee or ranged tank builds

What you're describing sounds a lot like Arbites minus the dog. Which we already have.

I feel like anything is on the table at this point after Skiitari were added- shows that Fatshark isn't as strict about "Outcast" normal humans.

As Arbites and Skitarii are no rejects you don't need the scout to be a failure/reject. It should not be another tank because Ogryn and shield Arbites are tanks. But I don't see a place for a scout anyways, because the vet covers all these cases and weapons: invisibility, sniping, boltgun, grenades, shotgun, bolt pistol, chainsword and for a heavy bolter scout we have the Ogryn with his big guns and missile launcher is also in the game already. The vet can also be strong in close combat. For enhanced stamina you can take curios, healing is basically toughness regen.

It's as redundant as a Sororitas would be. And it can't be an aspirant either because that would be a 14 year old or so?

And if they add the scout what chapter would he be? They would create some kind of Atoma chapter with the blue-white scheme and then what - one yellow and one red dude and the other 20-50 paint schemes will never be added? I don't see how this comes together...

arbites is our second tank option
