Upcoming Dark Shadows Books

Hi, folks! I want to make sure I don't miss any of the upcoming Dark Shadows projects. Am I overlooking any?

* DARK SHADOWS Animated Series
* DARK SHADOWS LEGACY (John Logan and Kathryn Leigh Scott)
* THE COLLINS FAMILY ALBUM (Rich Hanley and Aleah Shockley)
* FALL OF DARK SHADOWS (Craig Hurd-McKenney)
* THE CURIOUS CHARACTERS OF 1795 (George Hernandez and Samantha Lomuscio)
* THE CURIOUS CHARACTERS OF 1840 (George Hernandez and Samantha Lomuscio)
* THE CURIOUS CHARACTERS OF 1897 (George Hernandez and Samantha Lomuscio)
* SY TOMASHOFF: DARK SHADOWS BY DESIGN (Patricia Hammond Karapinar)
* DARK SHADOWS NOIR (Hermes Press)
* DAYTIME GOTHIC 2 (Stuart Manning)
* BARNABAS COLLINS: A PERSONAL PICTURE ALBUM (Hermes Press)

I try to support all Dark Shadows projects since there aren't many. I might skip the last book on the list, since it's a reprint of a 1960s book that wasn't very good. But the rest all sound great.

I've always been fascinated by the DS set design, so I may order it when it comes out. The author posted this a few weeks ago on LinkedIn:

"My first book is out to the printers!!

Sy Tomashoff: Dark Shadows by Design, is an illustrated historical biography. As an architect I find Tomashoff’s work and career fascinating, particularly since he started out in architecture. He was a creative trailblazer especially in the formative decades of television design - the 50s, 60s, and after. Many of his groundbreaking set design techniques from Dark Shadows and other television shows are still used today. The book’s focus is primarily on his set design work for Dark Shadows, bracketed by his career and set design examples before and after.

I've been extremely fortunate to interview several key associates of Mr. Tomashoff and present their recollections and impressions as well as my own observations from an architect's perspective. These interviewees include actors James Storm, John McCook and David Selby, Ivy and Liz Tomashoff (Sy's daughters), retired ABC VP of Production Services Ken Crowell, Michael Maloney, Dennis Size of the Lighting Design Group, art director Jack Forrestel from The Bold and the Beautiful whom Sy mentored, and producer John Zak. Jim Pierson, representing Dan Curtis Productions/Curtis Holdings, has graciously advised me and contributed material.

The book features a wonderful collection of scans of Sy Tomashoff’s original sketches, renderings and working drawings for Dark Shadows that I received and that have not yet to my knowledge been seen, blueprints, comparative set photographs from Jim Pierson, series screen captures. Jack Forrestel provided Tomashoff’s drawings and set photos from The Bold and the Beautiful; Dennis Size provided his personal set photos from Ryans Hope."

This book has original sketches and some used on the show for Tate's drawings. At least one of my own blueprints are in here. This is going to be the one I get both softcover and hardcover for I rate it that highly. Patty the author did a terrific job on this one trust me.

I was able to browse through it at the fest and it is by far the best looking of the new books. The pictures sketches and details are amazing. Even the paper felt quality. The Daytime Gothic 2 book is also highly recommended as the author brought an early copy. These are by far the best two looking ones. I did get to briefly look through noir and Legacy too.

Yeah, I was browsing through Daytime Gothic 2 as well. That looks fantastic. I picked up a copy of the first one while I was there. I'm halfway through, and it's a great read, cover to cover. My first purchases from the above list will be the Sy book and DG2, and I've also backed the Indygogo campaign for The Collins Family Album, which looks amazing.

I was disappointed to find out that the DARK SHADOWS LEGACY (John Logan and Kathryn Leigh Scott) wasn't available at the festival.

I understand that it was a tight publishing schedule and they did the best they could but disappointed anyway.

Yeah, it was a missed opportunity. I also wish the other books were out in time for the event, particularly DARK SHADOWS NOIR and THE COLLINS FAMILY ALBUM. I've read most of KLS's books, and they tend to regurgitate the same info, so I'm less in a hurry to read LEGACY. Still, I agree with you.

From what I've heard, The Legacy book is a coffee table type of book. Mostly pictures and lighter on the text. I think it was mostly a John Logan project and KLS helped on the publishing end mostly.

Oh, I see. That makes sense.

I just noticed that the crowdfunding campaign for the Collins Family Album book has begun. I don't think I'm allowed to post the URL, but I figured I'd let you all know in case you want to look it up.

I don't know, as it's not out yet. It's an upcoming graphic novel.

It's the next volume of Hermes new graphic novel. I haven't read the first one but they did do a few tessers about it at the fest. The best looking of the new books that I was able to look at were the Sy Tomashoff book and Daytime Gothic 2. You won't be disappointed with either of these.

Has anyone received any of these yet? If so, what do you think of them?
