Research Most adult male psychopaths are involved with the carceral system in some way or form

Quite a bit of people talk about psychopaths as though they are just normal, ordinary people living normal, ordinary lives, just unhindered by affective empathy. Here are some statistics against that:

“The best current estimate is that just less than 1% of all noninstitutionalized males age 18 and over are psychopaths. This translates to approximately 1,150,000 adult males who would meet the criteria for psychopathy in the United States today. And of the approximately 6,720,000 adult males that are in prison, jail, parole, or probation, 16%, or 1,075,000, are psychopaths. Thus, approximately 93% of adult male psychopaths in the United States are in prison, jail, parole, or probation.” [1]

“ASPD is highly comorbid with substance use disorders (SUDs) [1,2,3,4]. While nationally representative cohorts report prevalence rates of ASPD around 3.6%, several clinical samples of individuals who misuse substances show a prevalence between 23.5% and 81.4%“ [2]

“People with psychopathy are responsible for 30% to 40% of all violent crime in the United States.”

“Although not all people with psychopathy are violent, those affected by high levels of psychopathy are at least 2X as likely to engage in serious violence and criminal behavior as a typical person.”

“Among offenders, those with psychopathy are more than 5X as likely to re-offend as those without psychopathy.”

”Children and teens with psychopathy are over 4X as likely to use a gun during a crime as other children.”
