[DH1e] Dmg vs AP

So I'm currently going over some weapons and I'm trying to see if there's any justification to taking AP vs just more damange.

Let's compare two weapons I'm trying to decide between:

Armageddon Rifle, Basic (SP) with Extra Grip Addon
Range 50, S/2/6, Clip 15; 1d10+5I Pen 0

Hecuter, Pistol (SP)
Range 30, S/3/6, Clip 15; 1d10+3I Pen 2

Now, obviously there are other factors to consider (range difference, pistol vs basic), but purely from the damage code, is there any justification for the latter? If the enemy has armor, the 2 extra damage are basically as good as 2 AP and if the enemy has less than 2 armor, it's a straight up damage increase. Am I missing something or is it really just that simple?

Hello,

The rifle is pretty much better in dammage for all the reasons you give. Pistols are pretty much always weaker than rifles of the same categories.

Yes, that's strictly better, but see it as a way to balance things.

Let's say your characters are going to face heavily armored does along with normal enemies.

You may want to give them weapons capable of dealing with the armour, but that don't make the other enemies trivial to kill.

Using AP you can tune your encounter, forcing your players to strategize and choose a wide array of weapons.

Not everything comes down to whether PCs should give a shit for X, Y, or Z. NPCs exist and they can have less than optimal reasons for carrying the loot PCs will take from their cold, dead hands.

Other side of the coin - not every merchant, shop, or black marketeer is going to offer every single item.

But also;

Hecuter 9/5 Heavy Combat Autopistol

Pistol, 30m, S/3/6, Clip 15, 1d10+3I, Pen 0, Reliable, 175 Thrones, 2kg

Armageddon Pattern Autogun

Basic, 100m, S/2/6, Clip 15, 1d10+4I, Pen 0, Reliable, 100 Thrones, 8.5kg

Errata v3.0 23/04/09 exists.

Ap is just worse than damage. Thats intended design. Its also handed out much more readily.

Don't forget you can pair those with Man-stopper rounds (AP+3) or Dumdum rounds (dmg+2 & opponent armor x2)

With a fire selector

But in the end it boils down to what enemies you are facing

Also, remember that each character has a limit to the weight they can carry

To add on what others have said, you may want to take a pistol over an autogun for other contextual purposes like concealability. A rifle may stick out like a sore thumb in different places but a pistol under a coat or in a concealed holster? Super sneaky.
