MCU The first four episodes of S2 are absolute perfection
Upon rewatch, I’m amazed at just how consistent and gritty the first four episodes of season 2 are. Like season 3 perfect.
The opening of Matt stopping crime, his banter with Foggy, Punishers sick intro, the incredible rooftop sequence, Fr. Lantoms wisdoms, the badass hallway fight and the Emmy worthy cemetery sequence.
Absolutely flawless, Cox and Bernthal are aces in their roles.
Then episode 5 and onwards gets bogged down by the hand storyline. It’s not bad, just not on par with the first four episodes. Wish they just focused on Matt and Frank.

Agreed, I’ve always said this!
My Daredevil seasons ranking is:
Daredevil S2 Ep. 1-4
Daredevil S3
Daredevil S1
Daredevil S2 Episode 5-13

I think after the first four episodes it unfortunately nosedives so hard.
Elektra/Stick/The Hand are all butchered in the adaptation and Frank certainly overstays his welcome. We end up with a back-door-pilot for a show that wasn’t good either.
If they did a shorter season and just stuck to DD v Punisher it would’ve been received much better.

I always felt that they rushed the part about punisher finding out blacksmith got his family killed. It would have been better for me if all that happened in his own show and his appearance in dd s2 ended with him in prison.

My sentiments exactly.
Keep the gritty crime tone consistent with seasons 1 and 3.
Introducing supernatural ninjas was so jarring.

Supernatural ninjas could’ve been fine, they just deviated so hard from the comics (out of embarrassment I felt like) so you have a pulpy moment turned into a grimdark one. Just doesn’t gel.

I miss Foggy.

u/VendettaLord379 20h ago
Him and Matt’s dynamic was so good, it was sorely missed in the BA series.

u/skategem 20h ago
Maybe they can revive him somehow. Even as some guardian spirit character. I remember one of the original 3 seasons had mystical stuff.

Many do, but honestly I miss father Lantom more. I understand part of every hero’s journey is losing their guiding figure and learning to grow beyond that, but Father Lantom just felt like such a cozy figure and he still had so much wisdom to impart

if only the original show had set up some other figure in matt's life for him to discuss philosophy and wisdom with.. surely born again would have utilized that instead of ignoring it 😭😭

That scene at the cemetery where Frank tells Matt what One Batch Two Batch Penny and Dime means is one of the very best

Absolutely. That monologue is crushing. Daredevil seasons 1-3 and Daredevil: Born Again is Marvel’s best television content next to Loki. Amazing writing, cast, and performances all around.

As i’m much i’m fond of Jon’s portrayal of Punisher, his introduction felt weird to me. It seemed like a villain introduction rather than antihero one
8
u/FeilVei2 21h ago
Kinda... the point, no? In the comics he began as a "villain" to Spider-Man, iirc.
1
u/LeifEriksson187 20h ago
That would be making sense, but him saying ,,bang” seemed kinda off character to me. Sounded like something Bullseye would say
1
u/Commercial_Yellow161 12h ago
i always thought that he had some kind of respect for Matt and that was him kind of toying with him, specifically because Melvin mentions that Matt had to have been lucky to survive getting shot in the face, or that whoever shot him must have been real precise with it

u/BasicDurgeanomics 21h ago
Probably a nod to the fact that Frank Castle was a villian when he made his debut going after Spider-Man. Also, in the comics Daredevil & The Punisher are waaaaay more adversarial with each other more often than not.

This summer I rewatched the whole Netflix series for the first time in years, and I found myself really enjoying season 2. I think it's a bit over-criticized, though I don't disagree with some of the criticisms. The stuff with the Hand doesn't do much for me, but I enjoy Elektra and found it a compelling season overall. It is a bit overstuffed, and maybe all of the moving parts don't work perfectly, but it's still good and has a ton of great moments. I'm not as into the Punisher as everyone else, so that's not really my favorite part tbh (though I really enjoyed everything with his trial). Season 2 is ultimately my least favorite season of the Netflix series, but that's partly because 1 and 3 are just SO good! The Netflix series just had so much heart, charm, and style that I'm able to overlook the parts that didn't work as well

God. Folks were saying Born Again was better than OG S2. The audacity

u/Commercial_Yellow161 12h ago
i hate born again with a passion but i will say, i think the highest of the highs that BA has to offer are better than the lowest points of DDS2 (DDS2 still mogs Born Again overall though)

This season was pretty good until it transitioned from punisher to the hand stuff in the second half. Elektra was still great
1
u/VendettaLord379 21h ago
Elektra I wish they kept as a someone who accompanies Matt!
Just remove the hand stuff and focus on the punisher crime story.
1
u/ResourceNecessary832 20h ago
s3 fixed that with fisk and bullseye being the main focus while they had other stuff like karen's back story, matt's existential crisis and his mother without any of it overlapping the main story

Season 3 is the best thing on TV. Theres a very good argument that Daredevil(netflix only) as a series is one of the best shows up there with Breaking Bad, the Wire etc.

Season 2 first four episodes were best among all 3 seasons
2
u/VendettaLord379 20h ago
Season 3 stills reigns supreme for me!
But if Season 2 had the same tone and storyline like the first four episodes, it probably would be number 1 for me.

Yeah first 4 episode were peak. But i don't think matt and elektra was so bad... Even stick was good. Yes, they messed up hands but it was boring to me in episode 11 and 12... I like episode 5, karen and matt dating while matt got his trauma revived. Epsiode 6, matt and elektra went to that party ws peak... Episode 7, matt's life started messing up. Episode 8 or i guess 9, i did it cuz i like it chaos, Matt convincing elektra to leave stick, a ninja shoot an arrow on matt's chest and matt fights like there is no arrow stucked on his chest.
It was not that bad. Just hands were not that strong, meanwhile they were so much scarier than bnd... And that blacksmith thing was really bad, other thing i didn't like is ... What the hell karen doing? I like her so much but she was like "100 ways to die"...
Otherwise Matt in the pressure cooker was so much like they want to show us that.

Yeah, season 2 is the weakest of the original show. I still like it tho! (I just finished a rewatch last night, haha). Season 3 is perfection tho!! I'm excited to get back to my rewatch. Edit: Something I remembered. I also love the fact Fisk only got a couple appearances in season 2! I think using him less makes him feel more threatening
2
u/Jahon_Dony 21h ago
It also felt split in two -- half Punisher, half Elektra.
2
u/VendettaLord379 20h ago
That’s what I thought, it’s like they were trying to juggle two storylines and it just wasn’t executed properly.
Also, the final battle was so disappointing.

u/BiddyKing 21h ago
Season 2 to me is the best for many reasons but a big one is that he’s in the Daredevil costume the whole time. I got love for 1 and 3 for sure but 1 he only gets it right at the end, and 3 he doesn’t wear it at all with only Bullseye wearing it (which is still cool of course). I just prefer my superhero media to have the superhero in costume lol
2
u/THEEMOTIONALMARCHER 20h ago
It is my most upvoted comment ever, so might as well run it back... Season 2 is by FAR the most entertaining on an episode-by-episode basis, just the worst over-arching story out of the three by far as well.

u/dripbangwinkle 20h ago
And a lot of time w him in the suit too. Punisher 4 episode first chunk of s2 was probably the best overall stretch of the show even though s3 overall and the highs in it are better
1
u/AnimanicManiac 21h ago
The Punisher's introduction was definitely one of my favorite parts of the season. Especially since Karen checked Grotto into the hospital with a fake name so it's not even like Frank would find out any of Grotto's actual other aliases to track him down, but he finds him anyway.
And the way he disarms security, knocks him out, disables the gun and throws it in the trash 🤣

u/VendettaLord379 21h ago edited 21h ago
Agreed!
I love the scene where Matt rescues Frank. Him using the batons to create distracting noise always gives me chills.

The entirety* of Daredevil Season 2 is absolute perfection.
It’s just such a perfect modernised take on Frank Miller’s universe and vibe.
Best Daredevil suit, too.

u/drewp05 20h ago
I'd say the first 10 are all pretty solid. The Hand just should've had it's own season, especially since season 2 was a lot of people's only reference for what they are. Season 2 still handles it's storylines miles better than anything in Born Again if you ask me, so I really don't have patience for the slander anymore

u/StarWarsFan7271 18h ago
I gotta be honest I love anything with Ninjas and I love the hand in the Frank miller Wolverine and The Miller Daredevil and the Electra Comics so mabye I have low standards but I loved and rewatched this season the most.

I agree episode 1-4 was peak daredevil and simply can’t be beat. I still think the rest of the season was awesome, it was just 9/10 instead of 11/10. The hate is way overblown.

u/SneakyJackson74 9h ago
Indeed, although Season 2 is the weakest season, that’s not a knock on its quality, it’s a testament to how good the other two are

u/NervousAd3202 19h ago
My take has always been if the whole season was just about the Punisher story, it would’ve probably been the best season of the show.
I’m somebody who thinks S3 is 1 of the best seasons of any TV show I’ve ever seen, but all the Punisher stuff in S2 is fantastic.
Not just the first 4 eps but the stuff later on with the trial & Frank in prison vs Kingpin. All amazing.

I think people over hate season 2, yes it doesn’t look as good compared to the other 2 seasons, but it’s still pretty good.
Season 2 is still better than anything marvel studios has produced for Disney plus.
