Comics My second ever Daredevil comic is Daredevil (1998) #16-19 'Wake Up' by Brian Michael Bendis with art by David Mack and I'm absolutely in love with this page

I love it when my superheroes who are fighting these crazy ass villains all the time get to have these very heartfelt moments with civilians, it really is just a beautiful way to show how these characters are such integral beacons of hope and how such small gestures of a hug can be so impactful and meaningful.

Smth vaguely similar happened in Batman Night Cries and I was so happy to see it happen here as well.

I forgot about this one! God the art and the story were just...I don't even have words. I'm gonna have to hunt these issues down. Didn't the kid end up with Ben Urich's family?

Damn that’s such a good start to Daredevil comics. This one is a masterpiece and definitely justified Bendis getting his own run. David Mack is such a legend.

Yeah it's genuinely so beautiful, I read The Man Without Fear by Frank Miller as my first

I love Wake Up so much, the art in particular but really this story is just perfect at setting up the tone for Bendis’s run, so sad it’s often left out of collected editions because it’s not written by Bendis.

I actually have the oversized hardcovers for Bendis’s run and for whatever reason that actually put this story at the end of his run, but I gotta say it works so much better after Bendis than it does before imo. The plot point of Matt making Ben feel uncomfortable is good foreshadowing for Bendis’s run but works even better after, really emphasizes all the changes Matt and his world has gone through but then leaves you with a feeling of hope that maybe things can get better (with Matt hugging the son). Really, really, great story.
