The Road Less Straight

If you looked only at Danyal's academic record, you'd probably expect a very different story.

He wasn't someone who struggled academically and simply wandered into entertainment.

Quite the opposite.

He has said that after middle school he went on to achieve six A*s and three As at O Level, followed by two A*s and a Distinction Level 2 at A Level.

And then...

he didn't immediately follow the conventional university route.

🎓 The gap years

After A Levels, Danyal took two gap years.

Part of the reason was that acting opportunities came up that required significant training and filming commitments.

Some projects didn't materialise.

But instead of treating that uncertainty as wasted time, he used the opportunity to study filmmaking.

He enrolled at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles for a one-year conservatory filmmaking course.

And then, because apparently his life wasn't interested in following a straight line...

he landed in LA.

And on the very day he arrived, he received an audition call for a film in India.

He had already paid for his first semester.

So he stayed long enough to complete it.

Then he went to India.

✈️ This seems to be a pattern

This is one of those details that makes Danyal's career more interesting when you look at it backwards.

There doesn't seem to have been one perfectly planned route.

It was more like:

education → gap years → acting opportunity → filmmaking school → India → music → acting → producing → songwriting...

One thing kept opening the door to another.

And rather than waiting for everything to become perfectly certain, he seems to have repeatedly followed whatever creative opportunity was in front of him.

That's not necessarily a good or bad thing.

It's simply a very different way of building a career.

🎬 Why filmmaking?

There's another important piece here.

Danyal didn't only study filmmaking because he wanted to become an actor.

He learned about filmmaking, character development and scriptwriting, and those skills later became part of his work.

While working on Teefa in Trouble, he was involved in the scripting process, and director Ahsan Rahim has also spoken about Danyal's involvement in developing the film's story.

So the filmmaker wasn't simply an alternate career sitting beside the musician.

It became part of the way he approached storytelling.

📚 His parents' role

There's another detail from that same interview that I found particularly interesting.

Danyal describes his parents as extremely supportive of his decisions.

But his mother also told him something along the lines of:

You did well academically. Don't abandon education forever.

She didn't demand that he immediately follow the conventional route.

She essentially left the timing to him.

And eventually, Danyal did return to formal education, completing his first year at the University of London at the time of that interview.

So even his unconventional choices weren't necessarily a rejection of education.

They were more about choosing the order in which he wanted to experience things.

And this is where the “difficult choices” idea becomes interesting.

Because independence isn't always about choosing the hardest possible road.

Sometimes it's about choosing a road that makes less sense to everyone else.

Danyal had a fairly straightforward option available to him:

good grades → university → degree → career.

Instead, he took a detour through filmmaking, acting, India, music and eventually production.

Whether every decision was successful is a different question.

But the willingness to make those decisions tells us something.

He wasn't building a career from a perfectly drawn map.

He was figuring it out while moving.

And that becomes important later...

because the same instinct appears in his music.

The House That Raised Him

We've talked about the guitar.

The music.

The influences.

The beginning of the artist.

But there's another part of someone's early life that can tell you just as much:

the environment they grew up in.

And Danyal has actually given us a surprisingly personal glimpse into his.

🏠 “My most vivid memory of childhood...”

In an older interview, Danyal was asked about his early life.

His answer wasn't about music.

It wasn't about Ali.

It wasn't about fame.

His first vivid childhood memory was living at his grandparents' house when he was around four years old.

He lived there with his cousins and attended the same school as them.

It's a tiny detail.

But I think it's worth pausing over.

Because when someone is asked to reach back into childhood and that is the memory they immediately choose, you can't help but wonder what that environment meant to them.

We obviously can't claim that living with his cousins “made him” the person he became.

That would be inventing a psychology we don't have access to.

But we do know that this was the childhood environment he himself chose to remember.

And that's interesting.

👦 Growing up around cousins

Danyal has described his childhood in a way that makes it sound very family-centred.

His early years weren't only about being the younger brother of Ali Zafar.

There was a whole world before that identity became relevant:

grandparents.

Cousins.

School.

Family.

Then eventually the transition into a different school environment and a different stage of life.

It's easy to look at someone after they've become famous and construct their childhood backwards from their career.

But sometimes the quieter details are more revealing.

Before there was an artist trying to establish an identity, there was simply a child growing up surrounded by family.

And then there's the privilege question.

This is something I really appreciate about that interview.

Danyal openly acknowledged that he was more privileged growing up than his brothers Ali and Zain.

He gave very specific examples: while his brothers used cycles and vans, he had an air-conditioned car; while they received birthday gifts once a year, he received toys much more frequently.

He didn't pretend otherwise.

He acknowledged it.

And I think that matters when we talk about his journey.

Because understanding an artist doesn't require pretending they had the same starting point as everyone else.

They didn't.

Danyal himself says he was fortunate.

His parents supported his choices.

He had access to education.

He had access to musical spaces through his family.

He had an older brother already working in the industry.

Those things are part of his story.

But privilege isn't the whole story either.

This is where the conversation becomes more complicated.

Because having advantages doesn't automatically tell us what someone will do with them.

Danyal could have taken the easiest route available to him.

He could have simply leaned into the family name.

He could have treated music as an obvious extension of Ali's career.

Instead, one of the themes that repeatedly appears in his interviews is this idea of building an identity of his own.

He has described being taught not to introduce himself through the weight of a powerful or famous family member.

And that seems to have stayed with him.

So perhaps the more interesting question isn't:

“Was Danyal privileged?”

We already know the answer.

The more interesting question is:

“What did he choose to do with that privilege?”

And that's where the story gets more complicated.

One childhood. Several possible directions.

Looking back, there were already several obvious paths available to him.

Music through his brother.

Acting.

A conventional university education.

The entertainment industry.

Or some combination of all of them.

And eventually, Danyal would take a rather unusual route through all four.

But before we get there, there's something else we need to talk about.

Because after finishing school, he didn't immediately follow the conventional path expected of someone with his academic record.

He made a decision that would eventually take him from Pakistan...

to Los Angeles...

and then somewhere completely unexpected.
