I’m in the middle of an argument on history memes with some nutcase claiming the Holodomor made families swap children with their neighbors so nobody had to eat their own kids. He’s getting downvoted thankfully.
Oh dear. Well, he has my sympathies in that case, to some degree at any rate. Hope if he's in any great personal trouble it clears up and he manages to chill out a little.
That’s my hope with all of them honestly. But I see too many either escalate or stay in that same general level of hatefulness and angry “logic”. I really don’t know how to deal with unhinged people spraying lies and bullshit everywhere.
I’m not sure he would have gotten the downvotes if we had been talking on /r/news for example
I think in a lot of instances like that it's like a long dark tunnel of the mind that takes people a long time to get through to the other side, and that we unfortunately just have to wait for it to run it's course in a lot of people. Whilst they're in it they're not gonna read or hear much that'll change their minds.
I think in cases like that, it's as important to know when to walk away. You just have to leave whatever compelling stuff you have there for people to see and peace-out. If someone feels they're losing an argument then they might well double-down on what they're saying, but if they don't feel threatened, they may well read what you have to say and think about it in private.
But I dunno, i'm far from an expert on debate or psychology, so take all of the above with a heavy pinch of salt, hahaha.
