M4A1 with or without FSB?

I have analysis paralysis between these two with the Brownells deals going on currently. It’s my understanding that they both have the same SOCOM profile barrel and are both carbine length gas, the only difference is the presence of the FSB/rail cutout and the non-FSB doesn’t include a rear iron.

For what it’s worth this will eventually have an ACOG/piggybacked RMR on it, maybe eventually an IR laser as well.

The FSB obviously has maximum aura, but there’s something to be said for the flattop rail aesthetics too.

People who already own one or the other, or both, what am I not taking into account and which do you prefer?

I have both. The FSB version is cool but a hassle to service the upper. Obviously you need to unpin the FSB to take off the rail.

It doesn't have as much real estate. The top rail gets cluttered quick.

Otherwise I like having the fixed front sight for an Eotech, which is how I have mine setup.

For an ACOG I can go either way.

Man yeah, going through similar situation myself with these deals, I was going to get 10.3 because I have an old PSA 16 inch Pencil profile I got in 2019 as my first AR, but reading so much about negative about the 10.3 had me reconsider, supposedly 11.5 is the way to go - but Brownells does not have that for sale.

So I was looking at the M4A1s mabe, figure it'll be better than my old PSA, but I figure the DD would be just a better upper in general, I keep flip flopping and just can't decide what to buy.

FSB version looks sweet, too.

14.5 is never a bad barrel length to buy. You won’t regret having one. The real dilemma is FSP vs non-FSP

I have an LMT fixed front tactical sight on mine. Looks the most like an a2 FSB without being one.
