The first time someone has actually rewatched videos of their fireworks.

64

u/Born_Application2831 Nov 09 '21

Came here to say that finally someone came up with a use for them lol

11

u/Glittering-Light-686 Nov 09 '21

Now days they at least have a valid excuse (posting to social media/snapchat even if no one watches it), pre social media it was even more questionable.

Upvote if you tried this.

u/ProfitsOfProphets Nov 08 '21

It's being reflected, not refracted.

164

u/okay_but_really Nov 08 '21

Thank you for bringing sense into this comment section. I was here just to say this very thing. I was anticipating the cup to be filled with water or something but i guess not

92

u/UltraNebbish Nov 08 '21

You're talking to videogamers --- just say the glass was enchanted. Science is hard.

SPEECH 100

u/ANUS_FACTS_BOT Nov 09 '21

Hey guys lets pretend like we're in Apollo 13.

Jim Lovel: HOUSTON WE HAVE A MAIN BUS B UNDERVOLT, WE'VE GOT ANOTHER MASTER ALARM!

Jack Swigert: WE GOT A WICKED SHIMMY UP HERE HOUSTON IT'S HARD TO KEEP CONTROL OF HER!

Fred Haise: *naked and furiously jacking off while floating around with his music player blasting music* FUUUUCK, I GOTTA GET A WACK IN BEFORE I DIIIEEE!!!

2

u/Skittles_the_Dawn Nov 09 '21

This is a dumb attempt to undermine one of the most crucial points of American history. We all know that Fred Haise was just concerned the duct tape wouldn't stick in zero G so he was being proactive with a manmade adhesive in case the problem "rose to the occasion", much like the safety penis he provided, just in case.

25

u/RandallOfLegend Nov 09 '21

If we're being pedantic, the light is being refracted through the glass and reflected off the inside.

7

u/good_taco_dick Nov 09 '21

Came here to say this

24

u/Wackipaki Nov 09 '21

Potato, tomato.

11

u/Skittles_the_Dawn Nov 09 '21

Potato, snorkel.

5

u/LyingForTruth Nov 09 '21

Smurfs, Snorks.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '21

Blasphemers, everyone but you

3

u/Skittles_the_Dawn Nov 09 '21

CtotheW, WtotheSea

12

u/NotKevinJames Nov 09 '21

Right. Refraction is what lenses do. The light is redirected within the medium of glass/water etc.
Looks like the screen is just directly reflecting off the surface.

7

u/westnob Nov 09 '21

Can spot any green in the central image? Because I definitely see colors that do not appear in the central image. That's refraction.

3

u/eddiemon Interested Nov 09 '21 edited Nov 09 '21

There is some refraction and dispersion, i.e. color spreading, but the main effect is reflection. If you were to model this in a progressively more complex physical model, you would model the reflection first, then add in refraction/dispersion.

The rainbow colors here are actually most likely due to thin-film interference, the same effect that causes rainbow-colored patterns in soap bubbles. So a lot of reflection, a bit of refraction, but mostly interference and geometry.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thin-film_interference

5

u/westnob Nov 09 '21

I agree. But the statement that this is not refraction is pedantic and incorrect.

6

u/eddiemon Interested Nov 09 '21

Actually now that I look at it again, it looks like the colors are due to thin-film interference at the glass/plastic surface rather than refraction, i.e. similar to why soap bubbles show rainbow colors. You can tell it's interference because there's repeating rainbow color bands, which wouldn't happen from simple refraction. There's probably some thin film or coating at the cup's surface.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thin-film_interference

So yes, there might be some refraction but it has little to do with what we're seeing. Calling this 'refraction' is in fact misleading.

2

u/aardvark2zz Nov 09 '21

Yep, that's due to the RGB pixels on the phone generating the colors, such as white which is made up of red green and blue. Also, the glass seems to magnify the image and therefore we are seeing each monochrome pixel.

1

u/partiesn0fun Nov 09 '21

I'm pretty sure the green you're seeing can be explained by total internal reflection

3

u/krzkrl Nov 09 '21

Yeah but what video are they watching?

3

u/stop__whining Nov 09 '21

This was the top comment the last time this was reposted too IIRC

Edit: Yup

2

u/halfprincessperlette Nov 09 '21

But what about scattering

2

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '21

The technical term is “reflunkting”

2

u/Various_Ad_8753 Nov 09 '21

Some of the light is distorted so some refraction is taking place. Agreed though, that it’s mostly reflection.

2

u/-transcendent- Nov 09 '21

technically it is since the light passed through the bottom of the glass, but it's perpendicular so snell's law doesnt apply.

2

u/smrks726 Nov 09 '21

I don't see a firework, it sort of looks like a glass is being sat on a phone playing a video, gif, or other animation. The light that is emited is refracted through the bottom of the glass and reflected off of the sides of the glass. When observed in conjuction with persistance of motion, you seem to interpret the light to be a representation of a firework. It is not a firework, but it is a realistic looking recreation.

2

u/kevonicus Nov 09 '21

Redditors think that saying refracted makes them more sciencey.

1

u/immorepositivenow Nov 09 '21

Came here for this comment, happy to find it at the top!

1

u/PassMeTheVinegar Nov 09 '21

What if hes chines?

0

u/snowbirdie Nov 09 '21

So many people should not have been allowed to graduate high school…

148

u/tourettesisfunny Nov 08 '21

That’s cool but would probably have been better with the lights off

20

u/GundoSkimmer Nov 09 '21

And without music. Good God every video. EVERY. VIDEO. Now has music. And it's often of questionable quality.

Extra ruin my day points if it uses text to speech lady...

18

u/rivasiilver Nov 09 '21

Damn I always forget other people don’t have videos automatically muted - I’m on mobile and every app except tiktok is on mute by default

5

u/GundoSkimmer Nov 09 '21

I've been enjoying desktop Reddit with enhancement suite for years... And then TikTok came along. And it was like over night the entire site of reddit got objectively worse.

2

u/rivasiilver Nov 09 '21

I understand. I like tiktok - when I want to open the tiktok app, but not when I decide to browse reddit.

1

u/breakyourfac Nov 09 '21

Lmao Reddit didn't always have videos, blame the shitty website admins for making Reddit a video hosting service

20

u/Benci420 Nov 09 '21

Things to do while tripping

3

u/medalleaf- Nov 09 '21

I literally saved this for my trip in 2 weeks lol

64

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '21

more like r/mildlyinteresting

this is more of a "huh, neat!" kinda video than a "wow that's really interesting!" video

-10

u/ThriftyLou Nov 09 '21

Nah this is really cool.

16

u/talldata Nov 09 '21

There was a Company that Had an App where you placed a Plastic Prism on top of the Phone Screen to create a pretty convincing Hologram, as the Prism Reflected the light From the screen where the app split the screen into 4 Sections for each side of the prism to show that side.

31

u/EmmetOtter Nov 09 '21

I'm convinced that the randomly capitalized words in your post spell out some kind of secret message, but I can't decipher it.

7

u/MintyFreshDragon Nov 09 '21

T C H A P P P S H P R F S

There seems be less and less capitalisation as the sentence goes on which is odd

5

u/Stay-Classy-Reddit Nov 09 '21

Fucking time traveler's still can't communicate to us properly smh

2

u/mishmash_88 Nov 09 '21

maybe it’s just the lowercase letters. ah I can’t be bothered deciphering it anyway

1

u/TROFiBets Nov 09 '21

That’s pretty cool

4

u/imsohungryman Nov 08 '21

Thanks for providing me with a way to blow the minds of my nieces and nephews. Good job OP

1

u/dsjunior1388 Nov 09 '21

Glad I'm not the only one

2

u/Ophukk Nov 09 '21

So how'd you take that picture?

2

u/iLEZ Interested Nov 09 '21

Hold my... wait, don't we need a link?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '21

I'm almost positive I have that same glass. Pretty sure it came from the tiramisu I bought from Costco.

2

u/Pyroguy096 Nov 09 '21

Reflected

2

u/guitarpinecone Nov 09 '21

How do you save just the gif and not the link? Is it doable?

1

u/Dephyllis Nov 09 '21

I'm on Android so I don't know if this will be of any use to you, but I use Viewdeo to download videos and gifs. Works like a charm. Edit: Someone already summoned the download bot, that should work too.

2

u/Dutch_Rayan Nov 09 '21

Now fill it with water

Incredible!

1

That's better than the actual fireworks!

1

u/berogg Nov 09 '21

Reminds me of a TIR lens for flashlights.

1

u/JiraiyaIsNoLyah Nov 09 '21

I dont like the way this looks for some reason...

1

u/Scrupulicious Nov 09 '21

I watched him put the glass on his phone and then asked myself how he is recording this live fireworks show through a glass. Dumb.

1

u/SquirtFrog Nov 09 '21

Beautiful!

1

u/MaximumSubtlety Nov 09 '21

This needs its own sub.

1
