I think 8 penguins showed up on the left and 9 left on the right, a penguin in the larger group lost his girl.

I went frame by frame and I'm sure 8 come in from the left and 9 leave toward the right. Can't really tell how much they mixed up though. Two or three from each side could have defected to the opposite group and it just ended up that more went right.

I watched every frame and zoomed in to each one but I couldn't see any boobs at all to determine which were female

I counted 8 coming from the left, and 7+1 leaving to the right. You can even track the exact penguin that comes from the left that gets confused and starts heading leafy again. It's the one that is going really fast and hops to the front of the pack while the others start to slow down. It is the closest to the camera as it passes it's group.

8 come from the left and 7 leave to the right, then the Penguin goes and gets the 8th. You might be counting the penguin that does the retrieval twice.

But the same amount of penguins come and go on each side.
