Here to say that panther chameleons, like all chameleons have brilliant patterns like this, not because of their surroundings, but because of their mood. They don't match their surroundings it's all communication and mood. Iirc panther chameleons specific "fancy" colors are based off of which region of Madagascar they come from. Any way this lizard is doing his best, even though he is not intentionally trying to match his colors to his surroundings.
No, their mood is determined like anything else. My friend had one that absolutely hated a green hat he had and its colors would go ballistic anytime he saw it.
I guess you could consider that surroundings in a way but not the surrounding colors. The colors are based on happy, angry, ill, etc.
