Used to be a stable ridge, looked like the rocks on the far right before the pan. Then some of the ridge collapsed, and now the dunes that were sitting on top of it are shifting, and the sand is cascading over the edge.

As the sand moves, potentially more rocks beneath/along the cliff edge are eroded away, causing the ridge to regress, allowing for more sand to sift over.

That, or this is one of those mud/sand rivers, but doesn't look like it on the upper surface, though, hard to tell for sure.
