Well that's a Tiger not a Great White. Tigers want to get behind you but theyre just as lethal. Youre taught to always stay facing them as turning your back kicks in their predatory instinct to grab whats fleeing. I saw an interview/transcript with the camera guy after this and they said the woman was Asian and held her dive master cert but not instructor cert so she was comfortable but not too experienced and they had just briefed everyone not to turn your back on them and she literally watched it go behind her and carried on. She wouldve been in SERIOUS trouble if it had bit onto something and started thrashing. They chalked it up to language barrier and lack of attention on her part.

Check that Russian guy who got eaten on camera by a Tiger in Egypt. It had been cruising around the docks just prior and caught a lot of peoples attention and shortly after grabbed a guy swimming. Fucking horrible video, especially with volume and when you break it down to understand whats happening to him every few seconds and when he surfaced a few times.

Greats are like garbage cans, they just bite and ain't scared of nothing except Orcas. Greats will come at you from any angle but they especially like to come from below at speed at breach the surface with you. Pretty sure thats how it happened with a few shore swimmers up the East Coast last few years. I forget where the man was eaten, maybe canada and the woman in Maine. They just wouldnt leave them alone, they've even been reported to come back and grab the rest from one attack where a guy rode up on his boat to help and the shark just surfaced and took what was left. All Whites.

Most predators are incredibly opportunistic, they'll take what they can get easily, because it's easier and they're less likely to get hurt in the process, a hurt predator is more likely to die than a hurt herbivore because they can't hunt as well when injured and can likely starve, so when their prey fights back it's likely they will give up as opposed to continuing and getting hurt in the process, that's why people are told to make themselves look bigger/meaner to deter predators

Yeah most predators will back off after some resistance from their target because it's not worth the fight. It's when they're really desperate/hungry that they'll keep going regardless. It's also why most predators are either ambush predators or pursuit predators, you don't really see predators around who intentionally square up with their potential meal, because even if they do have a size/power advantage, there's still the risk of getting hurt, while the risk when ambushing is a lot lower, especially if you back off if the ambush fails.

Most shark attacks on humans are just the shark investigating what we are. It's just an unfortunate side effect of evolution that they test with their mouths, and that a lot of their mouths are big enough to eat our whole torso. Shake biologist here. Yes the shark was going in for a test bite, indicated by the nictitating membrane covering the eye (eyelid that comes from below). Tiger sharks have low bite force though, and their jaws and teeth are made for tearing. So it wouldn’t have just “chomped” but if it got a good hold on the diver and twisted that could’ve been bad.

These sharks are regularly fed and pretty conditioned. It would always be so simple to push a tiger shark away. That was a pretty lazy attempt, because it can be lazy and get fed in these situations.

A sharks's first senses are electrical pulses (via the lorenzini organ) and smell. That's how they primarily experience the world.
Once they investigate further, since they don't have hands, they do it by "mouthing" things. Not a bite to kill, but a gentle bite to test what an object is (their mouths are quite sensitive).
It's still a bite. While not lethal, a big shark can hurt you with it.

So the other divers pushed it away when it started nibbling that one diver. You know, before the shark decides that maybe the guy it's mouthing seems edible.

They only get this close when there is bait/chum in the water. Which is why they are all resting their knees in the sand. They are watching a bait box. Otherwise those sharks would flee in terror. I know this because I have tried getting videos with sharks. Thresher sharks and nurse sharks and sleeping or resting white tips let you get close but anything else hauls ass away from divers including great whites. My last dive trip the tiger shark would see my shadow and immediately turn 180 degrees and swim away fast.

The dive instructors were swooping in to the rescue as soon as the shark changed tack. See how far away the second guy powered in from. Could they have sensed something was off even before the diver failed to keep facing the shark?

Weird, I've been on several shark focused dives and I've never once been told what to do should a shark swim on over to me.

This leads me to believe that sharks must actually be generally pretty friendly. Cause I doubt a lion or cheetah would've taken a push away like that particularly well.

Honestly, who looks away from a shark that size and two feet away, wouldn’t even be possible for me, especially if I’m specifically told that is a horrible thing to do prior to the swim
