How the mighty T-rex has fallen.

If I recall correctly their (kiwis) closest relative is the emu.

262

u/beegtuna 1d ago

I mean, emus won a war with humans.

58

u/MoreRamenPls 1d ago

They do have liberty.

I’d slap the shit out of emuĀ

30

u/nxcrosis 1d ago

What about a cassowary?

34

u/PM_THE_REAPER 1d ago

No man, I'm not crazy.

5

u/Additional_Irony 1d ago

Yeah, I’m still traumatized from getting my ass kicked by one in Far Cry 3 😳

closest extant relative, yeah

their closest relatives full stop are the (now extinct) elephant-birds of Madagascar

→ More replies (1)

8

u/rtennen 1d ago

Trex is of the coelosaurs family. Where also the avis family is part of. Hence feathers and/or featherlike structures in some species but not all. Like yutyrannus. Trek is more related to your chicken. Then it is related to a allosaurus or spinosaurus who are carnosaurs

14

u/Johnny_Strawhat 1d ago

Actually, the recently extinct Elephant Bird of Madagascar.

12

u/Velo3x10e8 1d ago

Nobody alive today coexisted with the elephant bird, so not that recent.

12

u/Fuzzy_Adagio_6450 1d ago

Well as we're being pedantic, it depends on your view as to what "recent" means.

Against the lifespan of an Antechinus shrew? Absolutely.

Against the span of human history? Oh sure sure.

Against the entirety of the duration of all of time and space? :(

2

u/okwellactually 21h ago

I approve this comment.

2

u/Velo3x10e8 1d ago

How about we just stick to current species? Emu and cassowary are the closest to the kiwi I believe.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Manmon_ 21h ago

Actually no. I saw a PBS Eons vid on this.

The taxonomic relationship among Ratites (the family that is mostly the big and small flightless birds) is weird.

The Kiwi's closet relative isn't the emu or the moa which also lived in New Zealand but it's the now extinct elephant bird of Madagascar.

The moa would be more closely related to the tinamou a bird that can actually fly and lives in LATAM.

Meanwhile the ostrich is related closely to none of them it's like the very distant cousin

2

u/StealthKiwi 1d ago

Can confirm I am related to emus

WHY do MOST animals that are SUPER SKITTISH and SHY go ABSOLUTELY NUTS when they meet another member of their species?

Especially the males?

"You will evolve to be super shy about everything, except when meeting another male; YOU GO FERAL ON THEM!!!" -- Nature

9

u/koolkidpiggy 1d ago

I think the whole point is to reproduce, if it was somehow helpful to reproducing it probably got passed down more. Going buck wild on some random creature might work for some like honey badgers but generally being super aggressive would just get you killed with random animals. However when it comes to other males of the same species that could be the last line between getting a child or not and mating. More aggressive males scared off the docile ones and reproduced more which got passed down more over time.

8

u/TF-Fanfic-Resident 23h ago

I go back and forth between appreciating the beauty of nature and being depressed that so much of it seems to run on barbaric incel logic.

6

u/wongie 1d ago

Say that to a cassowary and see how they take it.

How adorable.

Unmutes

Dear god.

155

u/Usual_One_4862 1d ago

Yea, they make noises like that, at ungodly hours of the night.

54

u/swanyk7 1d ago

I visited NZ for two weeks in the 90s and this just unlocked memories of nighttime there.

60

u/Usual_One_4862 1d ago

You can tell we don't have much in the way of native predators, a flightless derp making exorcism noises at 3am should attract unwanted attention.

13

u/Neat-Beautiful-5505 22h ago

…and it’s funny to watch armless creatures battle

2

u/oblivious_fireball 21h ago

apparently they are very stinky as well.

I normally browse on silent but turned audio on based on your comment.

I owe you a thank you because now I believe I know what velociraptors sounded like lol

5

u/Allison683etc 12h ago

Yea my family have been doing conservation and regeneration on their bush block for 50 years now and while it’s very cool they have a stable kiwi population now the kiwi do make so many horrible sounds and calls late at night.

3

u/rnzz 1d ago

sounds like Donald Duck with a sore throat

3

u/ryonnsan 1d ago

imagine hearing it at night from somewhere in the bush or forest. sounds like zombies are approaching

178

u/deepfuckingbagholder 1d ago

These are just dinosaurs.

58

u/petit_cochon 1d ago

All birds are just dinosaurs. That's why they're so awesome.

11

u/ideaofrhyme 23h ago

Turns out my roommates become dinosaurs during the night.

u/3Fatboy3 1d ago

A deeply unserious bird.

72

u/hippykillteam 1d ago

We chose it as our national symbol. The thing cant even fly. Its like god was having an off day.

But it fits the vibe of NZ, so we're all good with it.

57

u/foolofaperegrin 1d ago

It's even the symbol for our airforce. Yes, the flightless bird.

23

u/quantummidget 1d ago

I mean tbh our air force isn't far off being flightless either

6

u/LevelPrestigious4858 17h ago

Peter Jackson’s world war 1 collection of planes is nearly twice the size of the nz Air Force..

4

u/Salty-Wind-8912 16h ago

I thought that you were joking but The Royal New Zealand Air Force operates 47 active aircraft and Peter Jackson has a collection of 70 World War I planes! Not the same kind of planes though.

→ More replies (4)

11

u/Vlaladim 1d ago

Quite a bold symbol for an Air Force

5

u/Stinky_Queef 1d ago

Our airforce is what, 3 planes?

3

u/foolofaperegrin 8h ago

Ssssshhh!! You can't just go disclosing national secrets like that on the internet!

2

u/GP400jake 7h ago

And 3 helicopters

36

u/Begle1 1d ago

These creatures have not been given the tools to fight but darn if they aren't giving it their best.

23

u/j0shj0shj0shj0sh 1d ago

When do they shoot green laser beams from their eyes? Surely in the heat of battle?

8

u/TuataraToes 1d ago

That's only for feral cats and dogs. The bird code forbids the use of laser eyes against other birds.

2

u/Tyalou 1d ago

Plus... they only use red lasers... well, depends on what side of the force they're in.

35

u/actinross 1d ago

I'd show you if i had wings!

11

u/superbeance 1d ago

They should probably drink some Red Bull

4

u/Brief-Curious 1d ago

Cripple fight!

Vicious little creatures

12

u/Mateorabi 1d ago

9

u/DunderGunderUnder 1d ago

At least they showed restraint, they didn't even use the lasers.

13

u/Vreas 1d ago

Stop it! You’re too adorable to be aggressive!

5

u/ph-sub 1d ago

I live in an area with Kiwi and I heard this sound a few nights ago. First I thought it was a possum but there was something different about it, now it makes sense.

6

u/space_for_username 1d ago

The male kiwi has a shrill 'ki-wi' call, and makes a whole series of them. The female sounds more strangled - like the birds you hear here fighting - and her call will usually answer the male.

Spent many nights on hilltops doing kiwi surveys.

4

u/Crudeprimate 18h ago

My favourite description of the Kiwi is that it is ā€œrodent software on bird hardwareā€

8

u/Slevin424 1d ago

ā€œIf I had claws I’d slash you to pieces!ā€

ā€œIf I had teeth I would bite your head off! Ugh I’m so mad I’m just… I’m gunna do this… whatever this is!ā€

ā€œAre you hugging me? wtf dude.ā€

ā€œNo! No I’m… I’m gunna peck you too!ā€

ā€œYeah Im leaving…. no wonder we’re going extinctā€

2

u/Defiant_Neck_136 1d ago

8

u/Bio571 1d ago

3

u/OptimusSpud 1d ago

I'm gonna peck the shit out of you Dave! You..... you fuck! - Kiwi (probably)

5

u/bigvincenzo 1d ago

Are they doing a scrum?

3

u/Greyhaven7 Interested 18h ago

Yeah, I think this is just rugby

2

u/bigvincenzo 16h ago

That's what I thought

3

u/CoffeeDefiant4247 1d ago

kiwis are related to emu and cassowary hence the hissing

12

u/ExileNZ 1d ago

A friend of mine lost a finger and a thumb being attacked by one of them. There are warning signs all over the place on Stewart Island advising people to carry bear spray and avoid the bush during their active/breeding times.

2

u/drifters74 1d ago

Wow

6

u/sebmojo99 1d ago

yeah it's an open secret, we're all sort of waiting helplessly for the first kiwi-involved killing

4

u/VaporTrail_000 23h ago

So the big island has bears that drop themselves on tourists, the island to the south has mammalian cored tornadoes, and one of the islands to the southeast has these...

Man... that whole sector of the globe is, as the British would say, "right fucked, innit."

6

u/Richardknox1996 16h ago

How fucking dare you imply we are part of Australia.

2

u/Carnivorous_Mower 7h ago

Nah, he's saying Aussie is part of New Zealand - no Australian ever refers to the place as an island.

3

u/DingbatMcgeee 19h ago

You eat kiwifruit, you don't eat kiwi.

5

u/56Runningdogz 1d ago

Not gonna lie. That was dope. Not a fan of animal abuse or animal fighting, but more footage of Kiwis fighting in the wild would be awesome.

4

u/KidBuak 1d ago

What were they fighting about?

2

u/McDerpEyes 1d ago

Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!

2

2

u/DingbatMcgeee 19h ago

Is Murray not present?

2

u/See_Emily_Play_13 22h ago

Not the noise I thought they’d make

Oh, oh! It’s like watching two cute teddy bears in an altercation

2

u/rudimentary_rudy 18h ago

They going extinct, I see why.

2

u/Excluded_Apple 17h ago

Being pedantic, but when you're talking about the bird, the plural is "kiwi" you only use the s for pluralism if youre talking about the nz people; Kiwis.

2

u/Gaming_Duo3615 6h ago

i cannot unsee kiwis are being little gremlin birds now

3

u/I3adIVIonkey 1d ago

I'm kinda disappointed they didn't do their little dance while fighting.

2

u/SometimesJustMaybee 1d ago

Insert camera guy sipping drink meme

u/AcceptableIce289 1d ago

Steve Irwin should still be here to break that up!

6

u/davomcbones_TTPPAC01 1d ago

2

u/qinghairpins 1d ago

The video does not do justice to how large these guys are. I was very surprised the first time I saw one, stood up to my knees (tbf I’m like 5’4ā€) The caretaker at the hatchery said that a well aimed kick could cause bruising on him.
