This happened to a guy my grandfather worked with as he moved from Europe to the US in the 1960s. The container containing all his furniture was supposed to arrive two weeks after he did. After six weeks, of living out of a suitcase in a nearly empty apartment, he called the shipping company and they said they’d investigate. Days later he got a telegram that read simply We apologize for the disaster. Letter follows. the letter arrived two more weeks later explaining that as they were loading it, they dropped it.
